I'm finally to the point that I can review my recent horrific experience without stressing myself…read moreinto the stroke level Blood Pressure I had before I checked myself out. I had to. They would have killed me. I've suffered for years with Chronic Hyponatremia, I haven't had normal sodium levels as far back as Sentara's lab history goes. But it's been at a level that while quite low wasn't at the extremely dangerous level. Normally I have regular blood work, mostly ordered by my PCP, Endocrinologist or Rheumatologist. For some reason I haven't had recent orders. Cardiology noticed this at my recent appointment & immediately sent me for bloodwork. Shocked when the results came through, I sat in dread waiting for the phone call I knew would come. It did & I was ordered to go to the ER. No begging or cajoling could get them to budge. I wasn't even allowed to wait until the next day. Walking in I could tell that the ER was overwhelmed. When I told them why I was there the triage person sitting next to check in nodded & I was immediately sent to triage, which was basically blood pressure & temperature. That began a series of being sent in & out of rooms then back to the waiting room. One was an ER doctor who did bloodwork and asked a zillion questions. Progress? No! My group of patients was then sent back to the waiting room. Eventually I was called into a room where a doctor told me I would be admitted. That's when the nightmare began. In an ER room I learned the hospital was full and 50 patients were waiting for rooms. I was lucky to be in a room, as bad as it was. There were very sick people in beds lining all the ER walls outside the patient rooms. The nursing staff was completely overwhelmed. I could leave my call button on for 45 minutes at a time. Staff passed but never stopped. Completely immobilized in a bed with monitors hooked to both arms & rails on each side, I couldn't even get to my water allocation or the bathroom. The food they brought was cardiac diet, flat tough chicken & dry basmati rice, both a choking hazard for me without a lot of water after each bite, which I didn't have. If I had choked no one would have come. Because I lay so long flat on my back with no pillow and a bad back they would question my mobility when I was allowed to go to the bathroom only with staff going with me. They asked insulting questions about my ability to function. No one came to go over my medications. So I didn't get most. The few I got were off schedule. Never did I see the doctor who was controlling me from above. I only saw a really nice Nephrologist who I could talk to and understood my dilemma. I told him I wanted to leave. My sodium has gone up 4 points. So he asked if I would be willing to stay for another bloodwork. I agreed & he said he would order. When my nurse finally came to the room again I asked about the bloodwork. She saw his notes & the order but indicated he had not submitted it. So she tried to submit an order, which also didn't go through. Their system was down. By that time my Blood Pressure was188/92. I had to leave! The nurse left & returned with a device that would process bloodwork in 15 minutes. My sodium was up another 3 points, which was still quite low but in an acceptable range for me. After checking ChatGPT to make sure Medicare would pay if one checked themselves out against Medical Advice, I signed their paperwork & was wheeled out to my car, driven by a friend. I didn't even change from pajamas. I just wanted out as quickly as possible.. At one time they offered to admit me for observation. I wasn't there for observation. I was there for emergency treatment. Admittance for observation is an economical nightmare for Medicare patients. Medicare A doesn't cover that type of admittance. One can amass large bills. I consider it a method for hospitals to collect more money than Medicare pays. Refusing that admission status I worried about all the other Medicare patients who didn't know the ramifications. My last nurse completely understood as she had gone through the experience with both her parents. The first thing I did when I got home was to take my medications. It took me a few days to get the few they had given me back on schedule, Cardiology wanted a log of my Blood Pressure since it has gotten so high in the ER. I immediately booked appointments with my PCP & Endocrinologist. Being up from continuously being positioned uncomfortably on my back, my mobility returned. Would I go back to this ER? Absolutely not ever, ever, ever!!!! This would have been a one star review if not for the extremely difficult circumstances the nurses went through to try and handle that many patients. Also the understanding and help from both my last nurse & the consulting Nephrologist was greatly appreciated.

I would recommend this hospital for the Norfolk/Chesapeake/Virginia Beach area. I'll also add that this emergency department definitely reviews your needs of care so that you're appropriately taken care of during stay in the event that you need admission.

We have found this facility to be A1 for care, efficiency, customer service, and cleanliness…read more I highly recommend this family care center when in need of care for minor ailments. We are from out of town and have gone there on two separate occasions and could not be more pleased. Highly recommend!

The office staff, however is rude and lies. When I moved back to the area they were a close provider and I noticed on their sign that they are also a family medical practice provider. So when I went in for my first visit I asked that I be established as a regular patient and that they be my PCP. "No problem." they said. My second visit there I was presented with a huge bill and when I questioned it, I was assured I was being billed for primary care services. After my ER visit I went in to be seen to let them know what my final diagnosis finally was and that I needed to get some medications refilled that had been prescribed the ER. It was THEN I was told that they only provide "Family medicine" services for those who need like 3 months of medications at a time (you know the easy things things they can bill crazy high prices to the insurance companies for I imagine). So, now I am sick, have multiple health problems, had been told by them ON MULTIPLE occasions that they were my PCP but was then left high and dry. I attempted to find a PCP, but since they have all my records and are the provider I had been seeing, when I needed paperwork filled out because of a need for an ADA leave from my job, no one else would see me or address the situation. So I went BACK to them to explain and the office manager punched into her computer and advised that I had only ever been seen as an urgent care patient. I said that can't be right because I specifically asked, and was told that they would see me as my PCP, "Well that's what's the computer says....lol" She said . She advised that Dr. McDermott was no longer accepting patients for primary care, and I helpfully suggested they may want to add that to the "Family Medical Sign" and was rudely advised that they can put anything they want on their sign (evidently even when it is misleading at best and false advertising at worst.) Needless to say, I will be contacting the Board of Medicine to report this as well as to my insurance company as I was told I was being changed for PCP services and NOT urgent care, and will also be seeking relief in small claims court with the assistance of my attorney to try to recoup the money I already paid and/or at least have my bill reduced to the PCP rates. I may not prevail, but them having to answer the complaint from the medical board and attend a court hearing should MORE than make up for the inconvenience they have caused me. SO if you need MINOR (and I mean minor) care, and are willing to pay ridiculously high prices, by all means go here. Dr. McDermott and the nursing staff are very very nice. The office staff and manager, however need some serious training in customer service, ethics and transparent and correct billing practices.

This was a great place for gynecological care. I'm sure it still is for women under 65. I loved Dr…read more Bertolino. But one year after my appointment I received a large bill. I'm on Medicare & have a Supplemental that pays everything that Medicare doesn't. When calling about the bill, I learned that TPW had become a division of Mid-Atlantic Women's Care. The new corporation totally changed everything about the operational aspects of the company, They required a total examination, whether one needed it or just came for a minor testing. Patients on Medicare were expected to pay the full amount out of pocket. Both my doctor and I appealed to the office manager that neither of us knew of the change. The front desk person who checked me in also wasn't fully aware of the change. The office manager appealed to their new corporate and assured me that they would offer a credit, since neither I or my doctor were aware of the change, But the bills continued to come, I finally gave up on their making good on the promise and paid the bill. This year when my appointment time was near I received a letter indicating the cost. A signatory of confirmation was required. I canceled the appointment, The acquisition of TPW by Mid-Atlantic Women's Care has ruined the practice for older women. I'm sure for young or middle aged women it's still a wonderful practice. Just no longer for me. I will miss Dr. Bertolino's wonderful level of care,

Last year, I became pregnant and came back for my obstetric care. I'm over 35 so there was a lot of testing, blood tests, ultrasounds, and referrals to EVMS for special screenings but they handled it all with care and made it fairly easy. I've seen most of the physicians here, as a group, they prefer to rotate you around to everyone so that you hopefully have seen all the doctors who may be on call when you go into labor. Still, you will likely click with one and try to stick with that one if you can. My original doctor, Fontanares, was wonderful, but retired from deliveries at around my 4th month and passed me on to Dr. Sarah Murphy who she said she knew I would love. She was right. I saw her for the remainder and is the Dr. who ultimately delivered my baby girl at Sentara Leigh. I also liked Dr. Connor and Dr. Arbogast but really clicked with Dr. Murphy who is younger, recently had a baby herself, and is very healthy and active. We bonded over both being runners while we were pregnant and staying active late into the third trimester. Dr. Murphy is a D.O. instead of an M.D. If you're like me, you don't know the difference. This means she is a medical doctor with similar practice and education as an M.D. but is doctor of Osteopathic Medicine - meaning the main difference is a more holistic mind/body overall approach to care of patients instead of the M.D. more treat the illness type of approach. Ok, sign me right up! That's exactly what I wanted for my pregnancy/delivery experience and is just what I received. I 100% had the delivery that I wanted. I wanted to remain active, wear a wireless heart monitor for the baby, walk around, wait to get the epidural and stay informed and make choices the entire way. We worked on a plan for induction and scheduled it for a day she was on call. Luckily, my induction/labor only lasted 12 hours and I delivered at 3:49am when her shift was ending at around 8am! We pulled it off. I feel grateful to have had her as my physician for perhaps the biggest medical event of any woman's life - she was a real gem who treated me with respect and as a partner in this event. She listened to me, made sure I was heard, took the time to answer all questions, is very personable and down to earth, everything I wanted. I've heard so many horror stories that I wanted to share a very positive birth experience and positive experience with this practice! I'm sad that I will likely not see her again as I see an oncologist for BRCA/Cancer screening but, if I am released, I will come back!
