Sensei Nguyen teaches a very traditional form of Shotokan Karate using the prescribed kata taught by Gichin Funakoshi and his closest followers. He emphasizes not just the traditional instruction given to all karateka, but he also includes free form kumite ('jiyu kumite') for colored belts, and ground techniques! The ground techniques are an extra bonus that you won't find being given frequently in other karate dojos anywhere else. The atmosphere is pleasant, but intense with an emphasis on physical fitness and fundamental techniques. I'm very happy to have had the opportunity to be instructed by Sensei Nguyen. Instruction is open to all children, youth, adults and elderly. The instruction given by Sensei Nguyen at the dojo is an excellent value for the money. You won't be disappointed.

The Cultural Center has many artifacts in a museum style in a side room. There's also many people from the community like the DC Okinawan Kai who utilizes the space. It is a safe and welcoming space for not just Okinawan people, but those interested in learning more about the culture and tradition. Those were great classes, and when it was time for me to find a new dojo, I joined Master Folta at his new location. It's a fine space, and the training there is authentic and excellent. Master Folta is kind and genuine, while also encouraging everyone to reach for the highest standards. His careful eye has improved my karate in many ways, large and small. I was careful in my choice of schools, and picked the best one in the area. I've seen his students, both kids and adults, get better over time and stay with the program. If you're serious about learning karate that works, this is the place I recommend. There is a lot to learn, and this is the real deal.

We started going to keep in shape during Covid and partly for me to live out my dream of being a Kung Fu fighting Hero and we ended up falling in love with it and the teachers! Just recently the instructors incorporated a "Squid Game" theme for our class and it was soo much fun that we were almost ok with doing intense training because of all the fun we were having. That just shows, to me at least, that the teachers are knowledgeable on the current times/events and are committed to looking for new ways to keep us engaged. Did I mention how friendly and kind everyone from the owner to staff members are? They are patient with my boys, but also stern and I find that to be a great balance. Hidy Ochiai Karate stood out above them all! Their classes go beyond the regular karate classes that other martial arts places provide. Here, they also do Kobudo which we learned is the use of ancient weapons! Trust me, your kids will go bonkers for this class!! It's taught in an extremely safe way, but still makes the kids feel like ninja superstars! I kind of want to take it myself :D Our daughter also did the summer camp this past summer and she loved it! She came home with real calligraphy paintings! Another thing that pushes them to the top is that they have Master Hidy Ochiai himself who comes down from New York to do special teachings with the kids each month. Look him up on YouTube and watch him slice an apple on someone's neck .... wait for it .... blindfolded! His skills are incredible and he is incredible with the kids as well. This school is in no competition with any other Martial Arts place because it's THAT good! I want to write a novel on here, lol, but I won't. Just one last thing to note: Sensei Winkler himself is AHmazing with the kids too. The way he talks and interacts with the kids makes them listen and have fun. I also have a bad ankle so this class has really been helpful in incorporating exercises to strengthen it. There's various classes for all age groups and the first class is free in case you'd like to try it but you're unsure. I'd say give it a shot! You learn great technique, form, and sweat up a storm. Most of all, it's a fun environment for everyone. I really enjoy coming here. We do different exercises so it never gets boring. I look forward to improving my technique!
