We were looking for a dinner stop that wasn't a chain and found this gem along I29. The service was great, and the food was delicious! Chips and salsa were delivered to the table along with menus. The salsa was fresh and tasty. Two hot sauces on the table allowed us to adjust the heat as desired. The three enchiladas platter was exactly as advertised. Tasty margaritas and pina coladas! Food was excellent, accompanied with good service early on a Saturday evening. Chips and salsa were plentiful, warm chips and salsa served in little carafes to serve individually. He had Burrito Rio grande, made with beef tips.... Massive burrito!!! I had Pollo Plancho, which was flattened grilled chicken with fresh mushrooms, caramelized onions and green peppers... topped with white cheese sauce and refried beans. I loved it! We stopped for a quick bite late in the evening and everything was delicious, they use chicken breast meat for soup and tacos. Soup was a little on the bland side nonetheless we still enjoyed it best by adding lemon and a little salt :) ... Fresh ingredients noted and everything was hot /perfect temperature ! . Waiter was friendly and professional. This restaurant seemed to be a local favorite as it was busy with to go orders and dinning in. I've been loving El Maugeys for close to twenty years! I thought I try Senor Barrigas in Mound City,Mo since they share the same Menu. "It was awful" , I ordered two of my favorie dishes,The Del Mar & Carnitas Dinner. It was VERY BAD ! The rice was half cooked & tasted spoiled, the seafood dish was burnt,dry and mostly onions and peppers, had 4 shrimp, tiny burnt scallops with overcooked piece of talalpia. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING! We came late expecting at best a short, minimally questionable menu. We were greeted and seated immediately with a large menu and chips and salsa. Vibe was cute, menu is better described as 'mexican inspired' than 'Mexican', but we found options. Service was very swift and polite. The Mexican salad was fine. The quesadilla ranchera was probably the best quesadilla I've ever eaten. Stuffed to the brim with mushrooms, and perfectly measured cheese. We were driving from KC MO back to North Dakota and we saw the good reviews for this place, so thought we'd stop to enjoy a meal on our way and it was a mistake. The place was a little hole in the wall that looked cute on the inside, the servers were very polite, but the food was not good. My daughter had the kids hot dog and the bun was all smooshed, my other daughter had the kids enchilada, which looked fine, but my husband had the carnitas platter which was crunchy and dry, I had the #12, which was a tamale, enchilada and mini chimi, which wasn't too bad except the it was very bland. The salsa tasted like ketchup and the chips tasted old and stale. Maybe we are spoiled because we've traveled a lot and usually hit a Mexican restaurant everywhere we go, but for our tastes, this place was not a hit! read more
