A happy breath of the exotic! We love to travel the world and part of that experience is enjoying the local cuisine. This was a wonderful combo of many regional delights. Even better - you can customize what you want in your wrap! If I lived closer I would come multiple times a week.

I spotted this place as I was on my way home one day. I pulled in and saw it was pick your own items which I like. I decided on a bowl and you can pick a rice (2 choices), or lettuce. You can add a protein and 5 or 6 additional items to top them along with sauces. I had the gyro meat, yellow rice, black olives, feta, tomato cucumber, lettuce with garlic and white sauce. Everything looked and tasted fresh. I took it to go and it wasn't soggy by the time I got home which was good. There was enough in there for me to give my husband what he would call a 'snack' portion. I also picked up a pistachio cake from the side refrigerator. That was good too and was the recommended flavor by the cashier. She was the friendliest person there as the people on the food line, not so much and that would be my only complaint. It was my first time there which was evident and I also let them know when their patience seemed to be worn thin quickly with my lack of how the process worked.

I love this place! It's like a subway, but with Mediterranean food. The ingredients are very fresh. I especially love their grape leaves!!!! The falafel is great too! The staff is very friendly and willing to let you taste items you're not familiar with. I always have pretty quick service and almost never have to wait in line. There's plenty of seating, but I always order to go. The place is clean and I always feel welcome.

Huge portions. Great service. Allergy friendly. All around 5/5 stars. I would compare the ordering style to a fast casual Mexican chain, you can get a bowl with rice or hummus, pick your meat and toppings. Everything was fresh and they were happy to let me try things I was unfamiliar with. If you've never had Mediterranean food I think this is a fantastic way to go. If you have had it and love it, this is also a good spot because the portions are HUGE and quality is great. My meal could have easily been 4 servings. Thank you SemSem! Can't wait to go back.

Such good food! The food was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The hummus was incredibly creamy, the falafel was perfectly crispy, and the lamb was tender and juicy. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff was friendly and attentive. If you're looking for authentic Mediterranean cuisine, this is the place to go. I'll definitely be coming back!

I order the chicken shawarma garden everytime. The meal used to come with green olives. Now they do not serve the meal with green olives anymore. This is absolutely unacceptable. I will not be coming back to this location until they bring back my green olives! read more

Food is fresh, good, quick service. Build your own chicken shawarma bowl is was big enough for two meals! I mixed in hummus, rice, Israeli salad, eggplant, cabbage, feta, and eggplant. Garlic & tahini sauce on top! It was the bomb!! Truly the eggplant was so fresh & flavorful. Loved the texture. The chicken was seasoned nicely. Cabbage was nicely pickled, adding a touch of sweet. Everything was fantastic! I created my own pita wrap with gyro meat and it was delicious. My husband got the bowl with pickled beets, hummus, beef shawarma, and white sauce. That was really amazing. Yummm! Just YUM. I has a bowl build of things I like. The Baba Ganoush is so dang on good and the texture just right. The hummus is tasty. The roasted cauliflower, fried eggplant, grilled chicken, cucumber tomato salad....all delicious! I had all of these over a mixture of the rice choices. The feta cheese complimented the food medley. I got all of this sauce and didn't need it for my bowl. I also ordered some falafel. The balls were crispy outside and tender inside. They went well with this white sauce. I didn't need tahini or hot sauce. I'll be back next week. read more

We continue our COVID-19 stay home dining tour. Today we enjoyed a meal from SemSem in TinleyTinley. This might be my favorite hummus ever. I love lemon and this hummus has such a bold lemon flavor. I really struggled to share it with anyone. The falafel was also very good. Soft inside, crunchy outside and a really great flavor. These taste fresh. The rest of the meal was good. There wasn't anything I disliked. It felt like a faster version of other places I love like NafNaf, Pita Falafel drive thru in Palos Hills, Gyro Grill in Mt Greenwood, or Hakuna Matata Express. This is definitely worth a try. I'm betting you will find more here that is done uniquely well. Also, this place has such a beautiful message on the website about their reason for existing. Any overall desire to feed you good food. What more can you ask for? Well rice. We were missing rice from our order. read more

Great spot for build-your-own Mediterranean. You pick a base of iceberg lettuce, spicy rice, or regular rice, pick a protein, and add 5 toppings. Came here Came here with my family to enjoy a nice quick meal. We ordered the beef Shawarma Halabi (with cheese), A mixed chicken and beef Shawarma sandwich, and a Gyro bowl. It wasn't the first time we went So I was a little overwhelmed with how many toppings they have, but every topping is packed with so much flavor. Not to mention the pickles are lit! My fave topping was the cucumber salad and the pickled cabbage. Yeah also I usually don't eat fries but their fries or a really really good they put the seasoning over it and it was just so yummy! Food was messy, soggy and did not taste good. They did not follow instructions and added sauce anyway to one pita. The other pita had notes to put sauce/pickles on the side. NOPE sauce and pickles were on the sandwich which made it very soggy as a to go order. I don't like the pickles and even if you pick them off you still taste them. The fries were wrapped in aluminum foil tightly which made them ultra soggy! Yuck! This is the second time here and they messed up both times. Will never go here again. $30 down the drain on this order!!!! read more

I wish this place were closer to home I'd be a regular. In a sea of fast food franchises, you'll find SemSem, and what a gem it is. It is fast, but that's about all it has in common with everything around it. The food is fresh, you can do vegetarian options, chicken or steak. Pick your protein, pick your style, wrap, pita or bowl and then you add fresh toppings and a sauce. Their hummus is delicious, you can select from spicy or regular rice in the bowls. I put in chickpeas, cucumbers, hummus, and some other stuff. The staff is always welcoming and helpful, happy to explain what the toppings are, and which of the sauces go best with what you selected. And when you can't finish it all, they're happy to give you a lid for your bowl and a bag or whatever you need along with a smile. Skip those other places, this is fast, but it's also good and good for you! read more

I was looking for a Mediterranean food and came upon this, on Yelp. Decided to give it a shot, not expecting great things since it looked deserted (about 3pm) Ordered a chicken shawarma and decided to try as a side dish their hummus and baba ganoush. The shawarma could have been a bit warmer but it was very delicious; meat was tender and tasty along with their pickled onions, tomatoes and garlic sauce. However, the star of the show were the baba ganoush and hummus; especially the hummus...I have tried countless places but this hummus was probably the best I have ever had! Smooth, enough lemon flavor and added olive oil, it was simply heavenly! I would highly recommend this place, food is fresh and super delicious! read more

A fast-casual Chipotle-style concept; for $9.99 you can get a bowl with your choice of meat (or falafel), spicy or regular rice, fresh salads, veggies, hummus, baba ganoush, pita chips and different sauces. You can also do this with a pita or a wrap (which I think is a tortilla). The potion sizes are huge so you will not leave hungry. Parking is simple as this is in a strip mall. The service is excellent. Highly recommended spot. read more

That person who came in after me, has now left. I only received my order a few minutes after that. Btw there were no other people in line waiting. Just me, standing there for over 15 minutes waiting on an order that was done. Also, the way I was talked to was not okay when I was asked was 'said bowl' my order. So unfortunately, this came across as racially motivated, since I was treated as less of a priority. And it's really rare that I feel that way but... this was a weirdly rude experience. Will not be returning. Thank you for my meal.

I selected feta as one of my toppings, and they literally placed a solid brick of it on top of the bowl. ‍ The other toppings looked like maybe a couple of tablespoons each. The wrap was also served in a floppy tortilla. From what I'm used to, places typically crisp the tortilla slightly in a pan before wrapping it so it has some texture and a little crunch. I'm glad to see that others seem to be enjoying their meals here, but unfortunately this experience just wasn't it for me. I guess I'll have to make the drive to the GOAT -- Sem Sem.

Great place IF you like 15 dollar wrap sandwiches with a side of slickness. Let me preface this by saying, I frequently patronize ethnic restaurants (mostly Middle Eastern and Indian) in the Chicago area. I also go to grocers such a Bee-san and Wala' on 95th. I teach Arabic and am quite familiar with the culture. I was really surprised by the blatant lack of ethics and the bait and switch. The menu says one thing and the prices on the register are quite different. I pointed this out immediately. The associate did not seem to want to honor the supposedly outdated prices on his menu, but ultimately did. The other guy spoke in Arabic (which I understand and used while there) about adding taxes, etc. They were trying to up the price back up. The menu doesn't mention that toppings are extra. He quickly added on four toppings--this was never mentioned anywhere. Then, another two dollars was added. My sandwich plate, advertised on the menu at 8.49, rang up at almost 14 dollars. I told them they could keep it and left. Save yourself the trouble and expense and go to Naf Naf down the street. Or better yet, head up to 87th and Harlem where the prices are jacked up. The food I did taste (they gave me a sample) was completely average. They don't even have kifta kabob on the menu. I suspect they thought they could bait and switch with me because I'm a woman and perhaps they thought I was clueless about the culture? Stereotypes abound. They wouldn't try this with a dude (especially of a certain ethnicity). ! read more

Semsem Mediterranean Restaurant is situated in Tinley Park, IL, and shares a parking lot with Floor & Décor and Hobby Lobby. I have had the opportunity to dine at this restaurant twice, and while my first experience was pleasant, the second one was not as good. The restaurant's menu includes Piat, wrap, bowl, falafel, and signature items, which you can mix and match according to your taste. These items can be purchased separately or as a plate, and the latter offers better value for money. Whether you choose to dine in or take out, you may experience chaos when paying for your food. This is because there is often a backlog of special orders in front of the cashier, who has limited English and has to figure out which order belongs to whom before checking them out. Although Semsem Mediterranean Restaurant has great potential, it lacks organization and structure. Moreover, while you can customize your food according to your preferences, I found the food to be quite basic. read more

Hi this is my first yelp ever, and my first visit to SemSem Mediterranean restaurant. I went it knowing I wanted a Gyro sandwich. You can't go wrong with what you know right? The gentleman and lady were very pleasant and nice. They handed out samples to the customers. Delicious by the way. I got to the counter and asked for a gyro. The nice lady explained that gyro was almost ready....meaning fresh. She suggested I try a steak and chicken wrap, and she even picked toppings. Now listen hear, I took a bite into the wrap. OMG, this is very good food especially when your mind is set on something else to begin with. If you love Mediterranean food, forget that GOOD food period. My husband came around 2pm Friday to get a falafel sandwich and they told him it would be 5 minute wait so he chooses a beef shawarma sandwich meal, the server didn't even bother ask what he would on it and proceed to put what ever the server wanted and he put lots of onions and tomatoes and the sauce that was very watery started wrapping the sandwich like he was not standing there so my husband chose not to get the sandwich and left. While we were leaving someone came to the door and acted like he wanted to fight and actually even opened the door when we were on the busy street just watching us. Had previously been a very big fan of Naf Naf but they closed. So, I tried Sem Sem. It was good. Everyone was very nice. I got a bowl similar to what I had gotten other places. It was good but it felt like it was missing something. The flavor profile wasn't as complex or something. Some spices missing maybe. I think I was comparing it too hard to Naf Naf. It was good, fresh, and everyone was nice. I'm going to try it again soon and see how I feel. But they fell short on my first visit. I'm surprised more people haven't reviewed this place. Hands down the best shawarma sandwich I've had in the states and I've been all over. The falafel sandwich is also very good but may not be ideal for all as it's not in its traditional form. This place serves a modern style of sandwich which is excellent in my opinion. Love their mix bowls perfect combination of protein, grains and veggies. The food delicious and had fresh ingredients. I recommend trying the mix shawarma bowl you can pick and choose your toppings that's something I love about this place.
