Great spot for build-your-own Mediterranean. You pick a base of iceberg lettuce, spicy rice, or regular rice, pick a protein, and add 5 toppings. The selection of proteins and toppings are great and everything tastes fresh. Don't forget to ask for warm pita to go with your meal! Also, you can get a free fountain drink with Yelp check-in! read more

Came here Came here with my family to enjoy a nice quick meal. We ordered the beef Shawarma Halabi (with cheese), A mixed chicken and beef Shawarma sandwich, and a Gyro bowl. It wasn't the first time we went So I was a little overwhelmed with how many toppings they have, but every topping is packed with so much flavor. Not to mention the pickles are lit! My fave topping was the cucumber salad and the pickled cabbage. Yeah also I usually don't eat fries but their fries or a really really good they put the seasoning over it and it was just so yummy! Will definitely come back here again to get my Shawarma fix. Highly recommend everyone goes here ! read more

I wish this place were closer to home I'd be a regular. In a sea of fast food franchises, you'll find SemSem, and what a gem it is. It is fast, but that's about all it has in common with everything around it. The food is fresh, you can do vegetarian options, chicken or steak. Pick your protein, pick your style, wrap, pita or bowl and then you add fresh toppings and a sauce. Their hummus is delicious, you can select from spicy or regular rice in the bowls. I put in chickpeas, cucumbers, hummus, and some other stuff. The staff is always welcoming and helpful, happy to explain what the toppings are, and which of the sauces go best with what you selected. And when you can't finish it all, they're happy to give you a lid for your bowl and a bag or whatever you need along with a smile. Skip those other places, this is fast, but it's also good and good for you! read more

I was looking for a Mediterranean food and came upon this, on Yelp. Decided to give it a shot, not expecting great things since it looked deserted (about 3pm) Ordered a chicken shawarma and decided to try as a side dish their hummus and baba ganoush. The shawarma could have been a bit warmer but it was very delicious; meat was tender and tasty along with their pickled onions, tomatoes and garlic sauce. However, the star of the show were the baba ganoush and hummus; especially the hummus...I have tried countless places but this hummus was probably the best I have ever had! Smooth, enough lemon flavor and added olive oil, it was simply heavenly! I would highly recommend this place, food is fresh and super delicious! read more

Food was messy, soggy and did not taste good. They did not follow instructions and added sauce anyway to one pita. The other pita had notes to put sauce/pickles on the side. NOPE sauce and pickles were on the sandwich which made it very soggy as a to go order. I don't like the pickles and even if you pick them off you still taste them. The fries were wrapped in aluminum foil tightly which made them ultra soggy! Yuck! This is the second time here and they messed up both times. Will never go here again. $30 down the drain on this order!!!! read more

The food was pretty good, although one of my toppings had a cinnamon flavor, which I don't line in my savory food, and I couldn't place it. The only thing I didn't care for was that you really can only order a bowl with everything stacked on top of it rather than a plate, and if you want anything extra, you have to go through the line again. For example, I wanted to get some tabouli to go, but I couldn't just walk up to the cashier and order that. Had to wait for everyone walking through the assembly line. read more

A fast-casual Chipotle-style concept; for $9.99 you can get a bowl with your choice of meat (or falafel), spicy or regular rice, fresh salads, veggies, hummus, baba ganoush, pita chips and different sauces. You can also do this with a pita or a wrap (which I think is a tortilla). The potion sizes are huge so you will not leave hungry. Parking is simple as this is in a strip mall. The service is excellent. Highly recommended spot. read more

This is a nice spot. My first time ordering the food was good it was seasoned to perfection. Everything was fresh. It was a few condiments missing but it didn't matter the food was delicious. My next time ordering was just OK. I wasn't thrilled unlike the first time. My steak was bland missing the seasonings I experienced the first time. My pita bread was stale and breaking up. It was a waste for me without the requested items. I prefer to patronize a restaurant that stay consistent with great food and service throughout the day--not just some random time or day. I've been wanting to give it one more try--but I have some apprehensions. I don't want to lose money. read more

SemSem makes for a quick and tasty lunch. For my first time here I ordered the vegetarian plate with a hibiscus beverage from the cooler. The best item on the plate was the baba ghanoush. The warm pita was great too. I'll be back again to try other menu items, but the baba ghanoush is worth the trip back just on its own. Only a 4 star from me just because I really didn't care for their hummus, my falafel was a little dry, and one of my salads could have really used some more acid from a squeeze of lemon or something. I tried a few bites of my friends rice bowl which had both the regular and the spicy rice and was a big fan of that. Can't wait to go back again and try more of the menu! read more

I think the owner may have been at the door that day and seemed a bit frazzled (understandable). Also, a sign that says please wait here to be seated. When we arrived we didn't know where to stand so we went to the other side of the front desk and were somewhat scolded and redirected to go back around and wait. It was pointed out there was another family waiting to be seated. Hmm. But it was a busy day so we let that go. Fortunately we didn't wait long to be seated. The waiter, although not to experienced, was trying hard and answered all our questions. When we placed our order we were informed several items were not available. Hmmm. It was still early in the day, how do you not have the items. We ordered humus. DELICIOUS!!! Spanish Octopus with white rice, combination plate with lamb, steak and chicken plus the white rice, and finally lamb chops with white rice. Problem the octopus was served first it had superb flavor and not rubbery at all. That was my son's meal. Then about 5 mins later came my meal, the combination which was deliciously seasoned and the chicken was moist!! Finally 5-10 mins later the waiter came and told my daughter that the kitchen failed to tell him there were no lamb chops. So disappointed. They apologize and she ordered the combination plate which came about 10 minutes later. Needless to say my son and I were done with our meal. Problem: initially when we got the hummus we ate it but had to drink water because our drinks didn't come till I got my meal. I reminded the waiter and he explained they had to make the drinks. habiscus water and a mint lemonade. Hmmm Problem: when my son got his octopus, he didn't get a knife and I had to give him my steak knife so he could cut his octopus legs. Finally when we got the bill, we were being charged for the lamb chops!!! Needless to say Al Bahar was recommended by Albawadi Grill waitress. And yes the food is terrific! Even the white rice makes my mouth water. But the service and consistency needs much improvement. Although the waiter apologized, at no time were we offered some type of compensation for all the inconveniences experienced. Not that it's required nor do I expect it but it would've been a nice gesture. The table next to us complained loudly and they were offered free food. We complained subtly and no type of courtesy was extended. Do I recommend. Yes for pick up order the food is scrumptious and No I do not recommend dine in experience. They have much to improve! Goto Al Bawadi instead!! Their food is delicious, the service is very friendly and the humus and fresh made pita unbelievably delicious!

They gave us a chicken shawarma bowl instead of steak. They didn't want to take the chicken shawarma bowl back so they just put it in a bag and gave it to us. Prices aren't bad. -mixed shawarma meal 4.5 - the mixed meat (steak and chicken) were both very moist and tender. A lot better than Haifa in Orland Park. The fries weren't bad but I would have preferred them to be crispy. These leaned more on the soggy side like McDonald's. I gave it a 4.5 because I wished the shawarma portion was bigger. -steak shawarma bowl 3 - I told my gf this but stop getting bowls. If you want to really experience the shawarma, always get it in a flatbread or pita. Never in a bowl. The meat loses moisture in the open air thus making it taste dry. -sfeha flatbread 4.5 - this was pretty tasty. The meat is moist but the bread on the outside can get slightly dry.

Great place IF you like 15 dollar wrap sandwiches with a side of slickness. Let me preface this by saying, I frequently patronize ethnic restaurants (mostly Middle Eastern and Indian) in the Chicago area. I also go to grocers such a Bee-san and Wala' on 95th. I teach Arabic and am quite familiar with the culture. I was really surprised by the blatant lack of ethics and the bait and switch. The menu says one thing and the prices on the register are quite different. I pointed this out immediately. The associate did not seem to want to honor the supposedly outdated prices on his menu, but ultimately did. The other guy spoke in Arabic (which I understand and used while there) about adding taxes, etc. They were trying to up the price back up. The menu doesn't mention that toppings are extra. He quickly added on four toppings--this was never mentioned anywhere. Then, another two dollars was added. My sandwich plate, advertised on the menu at 8.49, rang up at almost 14 dollars. I told them they could keep it and left. Save yourself the trouble and expense and go to Naf Naf down the street. Or better yet, head up to 87th and Harlem where the prices are jacked up. The food I did taste (they gave me a sample) was completely average. They don't even have kifta kabob on the menu. I suspect they thought they could bait and switch with me because I'm a woman and perhaps they thought I was clueless about the culture? Stereotypes abound. They wouldn't try this with a dude (especially of a certain ethnicity). ! read more

Semsem Mediterranean Restaurant is situated in Tinley Park, IL, and shares a parking lot with Floor & Décor and Hobby Lobby. I have had the opportunity to dine at this restaurant twice, and while my first experience was pleasant, the second one was not as good. The restaurant's menu includes Piat, wrap, bowl, falafel, and signature items, which you can mix and match according to your taste. These items can be purchased separately or as a plate, and the latter offers better value for money. Whether you choose to dine in or take out, you may experience chaos when paying for your food. This is because there is often a backlog of special orders in front of the cashier, who has limited English and has to figure out which order belongs to whom before checking them out. Although Semsem Mediterranean Restaurant has great potential, it lacks organization and structure. Moreover, while you can customize your food according to your preferences, I found the food to be quite basic. read more

I'm just tired of paying with my hard earned money to a establishment that does not appreciate my business, let's keep it real we only come here because it's the only shawarma place in town, but the service sucks, there's only 2 guys that are pleasant, the ladies at the register are pissed off that your shopping there, a simple thank you would suffice, and if I order a shawarma garden, a fork would be great to eat the coleslaw with, do better because once All the other places open up in orand/Tinley y'all will be second best, especially with that sub par service, bridge view restaurants are way better, btw if your white black or Asian you will be treated like royalty, but middle easterners who put this place on the map are treated like we are second and third class citizens read more

Hi this is my first yelp ever, and my first visit to SemSem Mediterranean restaurant. I went it knowing I wanted a Gyro sandwich. You can't go wrong with what you know right? The gentleman and lady were very pleasant and nice. They handed out samples to the customers. Delicious by the way. I got to the counter and asked for a gyro. The nice lady explained that gyro was almost ready....meaning fresh. She suggested I try a steak and chicken wrap, and she even picked toppings. Now listen hear, I took a bite into the wrap. OMG, this is very good food especially when your mind is set on something else to begin with. If you love Mediterranean food, forget that GOOD food period. Check this place out, excellent customer service for my first time. read more

My husband came around 2pm Friday to get a falafel sandwich and they told him it would be 5 minute wait so he chooses a beef shawarma sandwich meal, the server didn't even bother ask what he would on it and proceed to put what ever the server wanted and he put lots of onions and tomatoes and the sauce that was very watery started wrapping the sandwich like he was not standing there so my husband chose not to get the sandwich and left. While we were leaving someone came to the door and acted like he wanted to fight and actually even opened the door when we were on the busy street just watching us. Anyway we will definitely not be coming back. And customer service is not good read more

Had previously been a very big fan of Naf Naf but they closed. So, I tried Sem Sem. It was good. Everyone was very nice. I got a bowl similar to what I had gotten other places. It was good but it felt like it was missing something. The flavor profile wasn't as complex or something. Some spices missing maybe. I think I was comparing it too hard to Naf Naf. It was good, fresh, and everyone was nice. I'm going to try it again soon and see how I feel. But they fell short on my first visit. Just, kind of plain flavored, even though i had hummus, chicken, salads, peppers, olives, and garlic sauce all over it. read more

I'm surprised more people haven't reviewed this place. Hands down the best shawarma sandwich I've had in the states and I've been all over. The falafel sandwich is also very good but may not be ideal for all as it's not in its traditional form. This place serves a modern style of sandwich which is excellent in my opinion. I hope to return soon. One sandwich easily feeds two adults. read more

Love their mix bowls perfect combination of protein, grains and veggies. The food delicious and had fresh ingredients. I recommend trying the mix shawarma bowl you can pick and choose your toppings that's something I love about this place. The only this is the pita is not as soft and fresh as Naf Naf or other place but overall love this place read more

Amazing food, but such a shame to see the way the male workers treat the females. A bitter moment when my family and I are enjoyed my food and a male worker slaps the top of the females hat aggressively. Don't get me wrong, best Mediterranean joint in the area, but will still be taking my business elsewhere. Unacceptable read more

My husband and I love this place. We don't live in the immediate area anymore but we'll gladly make the 20 min drive just for the falafel wrap and gyro bowl. The amount of food you get vs what you pay is amazing! We always get 2 meals each out of our order. The food is fresh and the staff is awesome! read more

Just finished my meal and it was delicious. It's nice to have a new place isn't Italian or Mexican. Not only does FilFel add some variety to the area it has fresh, good food. I had the Steak Schwarma this evening and can't wait to work my way through the menu read more

Pita Land certainly has good tasting food for the most part. Best things are the platters where you get a variety of salads to choose from. The kind of high prices are the worst thing about it . Came in last time to get something as carryout. I got the Falafel Plate. This has a lot of different items on it, which makes it a good sampler. It's about $10 for a fairly good portion. This has falafel over rice. Mostly it seems the big pita is taking up room on the plate. There's garlic sauce, hummus, lettuce, pickles, pita bread, tahini, and tomatoes. Good combination. The only problem is there's not that much of it and the price is kind of high. Has a pretty good amount of seating areas inside. It always seems empty because most get to go orders. The prices are a little cheaper when getting takeout.

But there was a steady stream of customers, so I figured it had to be decent. I didn't pick the best time to go, as there was a large group there and the small staff was busy preparing their orders. After I got someone's attention, I asked for a few skewers with a side of rice. They didn't have rice, so I asked for pita bread instead. I ordered one kufta skewer, one chicken skewer, and one beef (filet mignon) skewer. In addition to the pita bread, they served the food with hummus, pickles, and some sort of tomato salad. Although you order and pay at the counter (no paper menus), they did bring the food out to the table. The kufta and chicken were decent, but a little dry. The beef was excellent; tender and juicy. The hummus and tomato salad were delicious, especially the former. The pita bread was fine, but it would have been nicer if it was slightly warmed up. The interior isn't the nicest, but there is an extension with additional seating. Decent food and a good value. The total with tax and tip came out to just under $25, which was enough for a light lunch for three people.
