Just finished a whole day of training with Greg Block and his team, and it was absolutely worth it. Greg is knowledgeable, experienced, and clearly knows how to teach. He breaks down fundamentals in a way that's easy to understand without ever talking down to you. You can tell right away you're learning from someone who takes safety and skill seriously. Assisting Instructors Emilio and Julie were both excellent -- attentive, professional, and supportive throughout the drills. The whole class felt structured and well run, but still relaxed enough to enjoy. It never felt overwhelming. By the end of the day, I was noticeably more comfortable handling and operating my firearm -- from basic fundamentals to controlled drills and clearing malfunctions. Everything just felt smoother. This couple greg n julie are not thinking right, they teach the class while taking turns going in the parking lot to smoke. The class was unsupervised and everyone was on their own. I didn't feel safe so I asked for the money back and he got loud and threatened me. Later on when I asked again for the money he started contacting people on my social media trying to intimidate them since he couldn't intimidate me. I had to get the police involved. read more

Greg is a no nonsense, Gruff old school instructor. He is the guy who remind you of a grumpy instructor from the movies. That being said he was never mean or condescending, He is someone who has seen it all and heard it all when it comes to firearm instruction. So he didn't pull any punches, which is what you want if you truly want to be productive and above all SAFE when it comes to firearms I thorughlly enjoyed the class, embarrassed myself a few times but was never codemned for it. I'm writing this review while my experience is still fresh (we took the class yesterday) because that's how impactful my time with Greg and Julie of "Self-Defense Firearms Training by Greg Block" was! My husband of 43 years recently bought us two firearms. I'd never touched a gun before, but the Westside of Los Angeles (where I've run my business for over 50 years) has changed. We frequently encounter people on our doorstep, some experiencing severe mental health crises, which can be unsettling. The police response time to these incidents is often slow, and assistance generally comes only after a crime has occurred. We signed up for the "Basic Handgun Class" (which came highly recommended) so we could learn how to use our guns safely and responsibly. The class took place at a scenic gun range in the hills of Azusa, which added a sense of adventure right from the start. Upon arrival, Greg and Julie, Greg's wonderful and welcoming partner, greeted us warmly. After signing in, we each received our ammunition and joined a diverse group of participants--young and old, men and women--who gathered in the classroom for an incredibly informative and surprisingly entertaining lesson led by Greg. His expertise and humor made it easy to absorb important information on gun safety, rules, regulations, and practical instructions on holding, aiming, and handling a gun. A close friend referred me to Greg's class and said "there's no one better. He's the best." I was skeptical, but Greg exceeded all expectations. I would recommend this class to anyone. Greg is a hoot - I loved his banter. After getting home I signed up for the whole series of classes, got my elderly parents to sign up, and two other friends signed up as well. I was glad to see some older members in the class from LA who had a wake up call after the 2020 riots on the right to keep and bare arms. After the range session, we all came back to the classroom saying how much fun it was. Not at all a typical public range experience. Double taps, triple taps, multiple targets, unload a magazine "as fast as you can accurately shoot." Greg is the best firearms instructor, hands down, no debate whatsoever. Do yourself a favor and sign up for a class. I have taken his handgun basics, basics 2, intermediate and advanced classes and I just took basics again today with my wife. She is not really one for guns but his and his wife's approach is so good that she felt comfortable and enjoyed the class completely, now able to effectively use our 1911 if needed. I've probably fired over 10k rounds over the last 4 years I have been shooting and I still learned quite a bit in class today.. things I have forgotten and that would surely help me if ever I needed to use my weapon. Also, not that he needs to be but he is fucking hilarious and entirely entertaining. My wife was laughing the entire time in class.. so awesome. Oh and he is also the least expensive class out there! You have 2 Choices when it comes to firearms training: The Alec Baldwin School of Firearms Safety or Greg Block's class. After a lot of contemplation I went with Greg Block and I'm glad that I did because he instructed and demonstrated that guns usually don't go off by themselves. I took the introductory Handgun class 1 and I will tell you now that no matter how much experience you have, you will not be bored in this class. Greg instructs a lively class and has a million stories from years in this business. He is down to earth and both both him and his wife who works with him are a pleasure to chat with. He likes to talk with people, tell and listen to stories, and this class gives him a lot of energy over his day job training law enforcement or preparing expert witness testimony. The class is fast moving and time goes by quickly the way he conducts it. You will fire 250 rounds in various scenarios that he sets up--some single shots, double shots, triple shots and if you are still standing--maybe 6 in a row. His staff refreshes the targets for you and in my case I was thankful that his wife helped me load the Mags on the Beretta that he lent me to use in the class. I never used this gun before and was as slow as S reloading. Someone else came with a gun that kept sticking--Greg oiled it for him. Class was a mix of women and men. I was between 2 women--rare for me. Greg had a smaller gun for one of the women that fit her hand well. My right hand on the other hand--a week later the blister hole on my right middle finger is still bandaged and healing from weight/friction using the Beretta. Thankfully, I can still raise the middle finger needed for driving in Los Angeles. Next time though I will try a different model gun if I don't bring my own. This class is conducted in Borrego Canyon Shooting Range. Greg has his own classroom facility there and uses a section outside for his training. He nicely puts up a tent to cover you from sun and spaces the line. There will be many other shooters in other sections. Bathrooms here are Porta Potties. Parking and the last drive portion is on gravel so maybe not bring the Corvette. Before you hang up the phone and say Borrego is too far--on a Sunday morning it took me less than an hour to drive from Santa Monica there. I recommend doing like I did and stop at Starbucks on Foothill Blvd next to the Costco off the 210 for nice BR and Coffee and breakfast if needed, before heading up the 17 miles into the hills. That Starbucks is a major cop hangout I saw, with a pleasant outdoor dining area--easy large parking. Greg used to conduct the class closer in Huntington Beach near the Pier but the City asked him politely to move to Borrego because they were losing too may joggers and cyclists every weekend. Much safer in Borrego. Greg is big on safety. Now I will tell you that I am going to have to "up my game" before moving on to the next level because this beginner's class was a bit fast moving for me--but then again I do everything slow and calculated--I was a Turtle in past life. We moved here and we had to update our licenses so we joined this class. At the beginning of the class, he said if we would post a 5 star review that he would give us a discount. On the range, my gun kept jamming up and smoking really badly. The range master of the firing range ( not the couple giving the class) noticed I was having problems so he came over to help me and he said the ammo I was using was cheap reloads and my fireman could have exploded. He asked where I got this ammo, and I told him they were part of the class. The guy teaching the class said the ammo would be new. My gun was damaged and unsafe to use, and the range master confiscated mine and the 2 other people's ammo in the class, one girl in the class was injured and taken to the hospital we took a picture of her blood still on the ground when we where waiting for the paramedics. The next day, I called to get a refund, and he said no refunds so I told him I would leave him a bad review and he hung up on me, then about 5 minutes later he calls me and says my full name , birth date and first half of my social security number and the last half of my phone number, that I had to put on the application in order to take the class and he said if you leave a bad review, he would sell my information online. I called the Police and the NRA, and they said they have had several complaints against them. I'm glad I had him on speaker phone so my friends heard it all. Look at how he responds to all his bad reviews, all attitude, or he denies it ever happened. Keep trying to intimidate us, and we will update this review. This is a husband and wife team, ex cops bullies. Maybe this works for Californians, but not for a Texan. read more

Took Basic Handgun Training class with Greg and his team today. This isn't my first time shooting a handgun but I recently purchased a new firearm and wanted to get some practice with guidance to correct any bad habits. You can bring your own gun and ammo or rent a gun. FYI bring 250 rounds if you're bringing your own ammo. There is also ammo available for purchase. Bring your ear and eye protection or you can borrow a pair from Greg. Greg will walk you through firearm safety prior to the class. Following this classroom time you have a live fire session guided by Greg and his team. You get to practice firing at multiple close range distances with instructors watching and providing guidance as you go. The best part was being able to practice double and triple taps along with multi-target practice. That was my first experience getting to fire my handgun under those circumstances so I appreciated the practice. Overall I enjoyed the experience, simultaneously learning and sharpening my handgun skills. Highly recommend for those new to guns and stimulating enough for casual shooters. Definitely coming back for more. Purchased Basic Handgun Training 2 for later in the year so I will update the review at that point. Looking forward to learning more with Greg! Some tips. The range at Burro Canyon does not have any cell or internet service. Bring lunch for a learning session after the live fire session. I'm so glad I decided to take the Basic Handgun Course with Greg and his amazing team. This is a great training if you're a beginner or if you've had experience in the past and you want to get some fresh knowledge. I've been out of the military since 2016 so I knew this would be the best training for me. I started out a little rusty but eventually I started getting the hang of it thanks to the team especially Julie. The learning environment was safe and all safety protocols were followed. I see some reviews mentioning social distancing but there's plenty of room in the training classroom if you want to pull your chair away from someone. You definitely have that option. You will shoot 250 rounds in the first class and 100 rounds in the second d class. You will learn target and tactical techniques. These courses provide the opportunity to rapid fire which is something that indoor ranges don't allow. In a real world situation, you may have to fire rapidly. I thought I was familiar, safe and accurate with my pistol before the class but I was not. The Basic Handgun class held in the outdoor range should be required for anyone you care about that has a handgun. Unlike other classes, you get training in grip, stance, safety, accuracy, rapid fire, multiple target, with instructors instantly available and not shy to correct you. It is run and personally taught by the most credentialed law enforcement trainer in the state. At about half the cost of other classes. It is far from fancy and you will be exhausted at the end but you will feel much more confident in your ability to shoot. The ground school lasts a couple hours, then a few hours of shooting, followed by a little more ground school. Greg hangs out after to answer all the burning questions his students have. read more

I can't say enough about this instructor and his crew. The basic class was 100% from beginning to end! Professional, packed full of useful and interesting information and definitely fun! Greg knows his stuff and knows it well. The outdoor range he uses is a bit of a drive for most but better than any indoor range and their stricter rules. One of the best group classes I've taken in firearms training. Even though the class was fulll, there were several trainers to help at the range. Gun safety was practiced at all times and I left the class not only as a more accurate shooter, but but also with knowledge I did not have prior to attending. We have several friends who have taken classes from Greg, and for us this was the first step to be able to continue to take more classes from him in the future. My wife took Greg's beginners course a couple of months ago. She liked it so much, she wanted to take it again and signed me up, too. I have shot guns most of my life, but it was still an educational and worthwhile experience. After a nice drive up from Orange County, Greg and his team checked people in, providing people with guns/ammo if needed, as well as hearing/eye protection. We brought our own, but it is a nice touch. Greg started with an indoor classroom lecture about guns, history, and safety. From there, we went out to the range and were assigned into relay teams of Group 1 and 2 with both working on the same target. Group 1 goes to the line while Group 2 loads and vice versa. We both shot a couple hundred rounds of ammo at multiple targets and distances. Our instructor Ian, who was assigned to our side, was hands on, giving solid instructions and recommendations on how to be better. Afterwards, we had lunch and then went back into the classroom for follow-up education and Q&A. We have already signed up for Handgun 2 and look forward to taking more classes in the future! I am sorry to have to post this, but I feel people need to know so they won't fall into the same trap I did. Greg should not be able to keep money from people for his failure to provide a compliant environment. I signed up for a basic handgun class. About a week before the class, I was informed via email the class would have 20 people, and masks would be "optional" in the classroom (indoors). This is not compliant with current L.A. County or federal COVID safety protocols, where masks are REQUIRED indoors. I have a 77-yo family member who is a cancer survivor. I can't accept this unsafe policy, so I told him and implored him to be compliant with the law to provide a safe environment for everyone. Greg at first claimed the class at Burro Canyon Shooting Range is "Federal forrest [sic], Which means the county has little if any say." When pointed out federal properties have the same mask indoors requirement, Greg then said it's not part of the national forest, it's a private business. If so, then this property is still inside L.A. County and it has jurisdiction. Private businesses are not exempt from this rule: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/acd/ncorona2019/BestPractices/ "The LA County Health Officer Order requires people aged 2 years and older, regardless of vaccination status, to wear a face mask in all indoor public settings, including all public and private businesses, and at outdoor Mega Events." https://www.usda.gov/coronavirus/national-forests Either under federal or local jurisdiction, the same mask indoors rule applies. In response to my pleading with him to follow the law, Greg said "In the last 18 months, I average three to four weekends a month there. I've seen the forest service and LA sheriff ONCE each. Neither stopped anywhere, they just drove thru the property and left." Now it sounded like he's telling me this is a remote place, where laws are optional and he can do as he pleases. Am I going to be even physically safe attending this class? To me, this is frankly scary and threatening. Regulations are to keep people safe, not something you comply with only under watchful eyes. Greg did offer to move me to a smaller class, but would not change his out-of-compliance policy and would not refund, pointing to his FAQ and 24 hours notice. His FAQ has one item saying no refund when someone can't make a class and didn't give notice 24 hours before the class. With earlier notice, he would move them to another class to suit their schedule. In this case, I have informed him days before the class I cannot attend because his class does not comply with federal and local COVID safety standards. Still he would not refund. I guess Greg apparently believes laws don't apply to him, so I shouldn't be surprised. Is Greg a nice person? Does he teach you to follow the firearms law correctly? I don't know. Based on my correspondence, he seems to think he's above the law, and does not follow best business/health practices. So I have my doubts. P.S. Greg responded that his business headquarters is in Orange County. However, the class takes place in L.A. County, and as such is subject to L.A. County regulations. I will admit to using the word "law" liberally. This is actually a Health Officer Order, but that doesn't mean you can flout it. As an example, McDonald's headquarters is in Chicago. Do you think its restaurant operations in California are regulated by Chicago/Illinois and can flout L.A. County Public Health orders? It's a ridiculous argument. read more

Last year, I was a brand new handgun owner, with "some" previous recreational experience on a shooting range. I subsequently took Greg's CCW Training and Qualification courses and currently hold that license. First, What a blast!! Outdoor training is a lot more comprehensive than indoor can be. Second, Greg is The Expert. His experience in law enforcement as well as an expert witness in shooting cases, years of training law enforcement and his unparalleled knowledge of the local, regional & national laws and his connections to those who write and enforce them, provide civilian firearms owners the best option around for becoming Safe, educated and proficient. Greg runs a tight ship on the range, the level of control that he and his instructors maintain over each and every drill, every shot fired, and every turn made, is incredible; but you will absolutely have fun and laugh a lot too. Their style is very comfortable, and you will have the feeling that every single moment is under as Safe of conditions as possible, not just from others, but from yourself as well. His instructors, including his wife Julie, are all very confident, friendly and are there to make sure you succeed and improve, and remain Safe. I've personally witness Greg have to excuse a student, an acquaintance even, from a class because they were a little off that day, proactively before any mistakes could be made; and Julie work with the girlfriend of another student who became temporarily overwhelmed from the curriculum until she was comfortable enough to return to the class, which she confidently completed. Both of them exhibit the utmost of confidence and professionalism, and are fun & kind to boot. They say they enjoy training civilians more than law enforcement because we WANT to be there, to have a good time and to become empowered to defend ourselves, God-forbid, if any of us ever have to. Recently, I have begun my mid-life crisis and purchased cowboy attire, a hat and a Colt revolver. Of course, I retook Greg's Intermediate and Advanced classes, because I know that's the best way to become familiar with any new firearm! If I could give this guy zero stars I would. This guy GREG BLOCK is arrogant and extremely condescending! I signed up for his basic 2 training class but not one because I have all of basic one training. Well when I got to his "bay", I was asked by one of his puppets (he didn't bother getting out of his chair to speak to me) if I took the basic one class, I told him where I took it and he starts laughing and saying I KNEW YOU LIED on your application. I teach it only the best and no one else teaches it like me and all this cocky bs! Also if you "knew", wouldn't a phone call be the professional approach to talk to me before I drove all the way there? But after meeting you, I know the answer to this question. Not once did he get up to speak to me, talked to me with his back the whole time. I can tell you, I would never want to be coached by someone this arrogant and full of themselves! You are definitely not a mentor or a teacher! Yes I did check that box because I have all of that experience already and didn't see the point in re-taking that type of class. I stand by my review, but great response, you just proved my point about your arrogance! I don't really care that your students "laughed", is that supposed to make me feel some type of way, Greg? Fantastic, CONVENIENT training for busy people. Great experience with this CCW program. I've been an enthusiast for several years and know the general ins and outs of the latest in the industry so I always go in with a skeptical mindset. There were a few points of the training material that I have disagreements with, like steering students to choose a bigger cartridge like .45ACP instead of the generally easier shooting 9mm based on a 1991 study, and calling appendix carry position 'gangster carry', etc. But I was able to discuss why Greg believes these things during the Q&A portion and I honestly respect his opinion on the subjects. He definitely gave me a lot to think about and do further research on, especially when it comes to the cartridge I should carry as well as carry position. Highly recommend! read more

My husband bought me a 9mm a couple years ago for home defense but I never felt comfortable with it so he bought me the beginners course for my birthday. We completed class this morning and I loved it! I feel way more comfortable with my pistol and have been practicing what Greg taught us since we got home. He taught us about revolvers & pistols & law in class. We did basic and combat shooting - combat with multiple targets was my favorite. We will definitely be coming back! The range we went to was in Azusa so be ready for windy roads which is normal in a national forest. This isn't some Hollywood pop up with Rose & Instagram ready shots so if you're expecting that, just don't go. It's set up so that it's not invasive on nature which I respect. No running water. Port a potties and tree shade. Take food & drinks for sure. Maybe even some big spray & sun screen if you want. Also, if you're looking for a pro - come here! Took the beginner class and it was Excellent. Very helpful instructors and lots of fun. Great info at the end on safety, laws, etc. Highly recommend for anyone starting out or just looking to get more comfortable/accurate. My family and I have taken multiple of Gregs classes over the years and this year have gone through the basic 1,2 and Intermediate hand gun classes. We enjoy Greg's banter and his willingness to talk straight. It works for us as we are a thick skinned straight forward family. Blunt and truthful is how we roll. Greg, Julie, Ian and the other instructors are always happy and helpful. We enjoy these classes as no matter how good you think you are you will find that under stress you are not as good as you thought... My wife has upped her practice to keep improving her skills. She was extremely nervous going into the intermediate class and talked about it all the way to the range. Once she was on the range and working through new skills she settled right in and performed very well. She left that day with new found confidence in her abilities. I think that every gun owner should receive training, this type of training, as we have seen folks come to these classes not knowing how to even hold a gun. It is interesting being on the range with these folks, but they are found out soon enough and receive the attention they need to build the confidence they need to handle their firearm in a safe and proper manner. If you are thinking of signing up for a class and want to have fun, speak openly, receive constructive criticism, and build your confidence, no matter what you think your level of experience is, then give Greg's classes a try. You won't be disappointed and you will definitely learn things you didn't know and get clarity on some things you thought you knew. I have shot Long guns, rifles especially, all of my life. I wanted to be more confident with my handgun, so I signed up for Greg's basic class. I was 100% satisfied. Greg's credentials and decades of experience proved so valuable. After a class on the basics of both revolvers and semiautomatic pistols, he and his incredible team took us out to the range. We shot 250 rounds from two distances and at a variety of targets and shooting speeds. I walked away knowing that I can safely handle my revolver as well as how to abide by the basic rules of Commiefornia! If you want serious handgun training, please look no further! VERY RUDE AND ARGUMENTIVE we started asking questions and the guy called my husband an idiot for asking such questions. Him and the lady partner was basically ignoring everyone and walking around all egotistic. He was trying to intimidate us by waving his gun in the air and started yelling. The female trainer kept talking about her cats and showing pictures.  My husband ended up getting injured for the lack of supervision. We have never experienced anything like this.  I would post a picture, but I can't even look at how damaged his hand still is. Just makes me sick. read more
