I did not enter this facility with a bowel bladder problem, but found that the way they deal with it is, rather than to help you get up and get to the toilet. They slap a diaper on you and tell you to go to the bathroom on yourself. Then the poop crew comes in changes, everyone's diaper and slaps another one on you. I was horrified to say the least. The Managment and Social Services Dept not only lied about various issues that occurred but were unsupportive in every single way. Absolutely the worst ever! Gabby should find a different field to work in because it was evident from our first conversation that helping others was not on her agenda. She was demeaning, rude and put words in mouth that I never uttered in order to make me seem uncompliant. She was offensive in every way possible and created more barriers to my recovery than I can mention here. Next the 2 younger male nurses who handed out the meds had dismissive smart a** attitudes. One actually said to me after waiting over an hour for much needed pain meds after back surgery "This is for my crybaby" needless to say I was shocked. After they refused to tell me what pills I was taking when asked... I requested a printout of the medication's I was taking. He asked me why I was being so difficult and told me that he was going to make me wait an additional hour for the pain medication that was due at that time AND he never printed out the list! After reporting this to management, it became clear to me that they were going to do absolutely nothing about it. Several times I ended up having to call the facility from my outside cell phone to get someone to answer my call light because the minimum wait time was 20 minutes. Completely unacceptable in every way, shape and form. However, I would like to highly commend the staff of overworked CNA's there who were kind, compassionate and caring. Many thanks to those who helped me along the way. In addition the physical therapy staff was excellent and I wish I could remember the Russian gal's name who was so fantastic in every way. Kudos to you. Keep up the good work!! The final straw that broke the camels back was the fact that they lost my custom-made front crown tooth and refused to even let me file a report about it. I was furious and I'm still without a front tooth many weeks later. I asked everybody to stop what they were doing that was helping me at that particular moment and told them exactly where my tooth was located next to me and they just kept on going and rolled it up in my sheets and dirty diaper, shoved them together in a plastic bag and left the room saying they would find it later in the laundry . I was mortified. It was a Saturday and I couldn't even get anybody to walk in there and place a reward sign which I was offering because it was a $2000 crown that required 3 seperate visits to the dental office. Heartbreaking expensive and difficult to replace considering my current health condition and restrictions. I'm not sure how they got away with NOT allowing me to file a report about the incident, but they simply refused to give me the necessary paperwork to file a report. Shocking!! After that I AMAʻd out of that hell hole just to get away from mananagment and Gabby who was physically blocking my exit with both hands on her hips upon me trying to exit the building. It was a disgusting experience in which I left the facility worse often than when I entered. I am now happily situated at Pelican Ridge Post Acute just down the street and I am highly satisfied with the care I am receiving there.

The caring staff at Pelican Ridge is outstanding in every way! The 24 hr care and comfort with genuine compassion is beyond anything I have experienced before in the various facilities I have been in. From the Physical/Occupational Therapy Team to the Nursing Staff I have found a warm and supportive group of individuals who genuinely care. Whoever does the hiring for Newport Ridge should receive a 5-star review along with Lawerence in Administration. Lawerence came in over a 3-day holiday to straighten out a misunderstanding with professionalism and expediency. I was so impressed with his willingness to get it done. In conclusion, I would not hesitate to send a loved one here, knowing they will be well taken care of and supported in every way possible. Excellent facility for healing. In conclusion the CNAs at Pacific Ridge are the best in the business. They are the backbone of this operation hands down and certainly deserve to be recognized in everyway possible from management and other staff. In our experience, the building felt dated, and communication with staff was often difficult. Reaching the right person for updates was frustrating and added stress during an already challenging time. My mother was admitted with the goal of rebuilding her strength and regaining her ability to walk. She was motivated and willing to do the work. After more than three weeks at the facility, including an extended stay, she left in significantly worse condition than our family had hoped. Within two days of discharge, she required emergency medical care. From our perspective, she appeared dehydrated, undernourished, and far weaker than when she arrived. While every patient's situation is different, our family believes the care she received did not help her achieve the rehabilitation goals that brought her there. Sadly, she never fully recovered and later passed away. This was our experience, and I encourage families researching post-acute care options to ask detailed questions, visit facilities in person, and carefully consider all available choices before making a decision

I'll start by saying that some of the staff were outstanding. And, just like anywhere, some of the…read morestaff were inadequate and ineffective and just going through the motions. Some of the group facilitators were very well-liked and effective and engaging while others brought negative emotions and lack of excitement from the very reading of the group agenda in the morning. After sending pictures of the front and back of my insurance card, I was assured that my insurance would cover my stay. HCBTS sent an Uber to pick me up and brought me to Newport Beach to the, "Platinum Sands House," which had potential but was badly neglected. The carpet from the living room up the stairs and at the top was badly stained, the kitchen was badly outdated, the bathtub in my room had no shower head on the end of the pipe, the garage door didn't lock, and two of us had our e-bikes stolen, the front fence was embarrassing with missing pickets as the house is at the corner of 32nd and Balboa, a very heavy traffic area and traffic light where people stop and observe. My bed sheets and pillow cases had blood stains, and I have pictures of it all. This was very clearly just a place to house insurance paychecks while they go to groups every day at another building. There was no money put into the house to make it the least bit nice in a very long time. Very substandard for private insurance rehab housing, two blocks away from the beach, or not. But the kicker? After being at Hotel California by the Sea for three weeks, I was called into an office by the head of the group facilitators and told that my insurance company had called and said that this facility was out of network and that I was not covered to be there. I was told to vacate the premises in 24 hours. I was horrified because I was woefully unprepared to leave, had no money to get a plane ticket across the country where I was from and had nowhere to stay. I was told, "We don't want to, "Street you," (But, unfortunately, you have to go). I was looking at being in a shelter with homeless people or being on the streets of California 2700 miles away from home. This was the most unprofessional thing I've ever experienced in my life, and it was so profound because they were dealing with a human life-my life. It was clear at that moment that the movie Body Brokers was very real and the recovery industry is just a business. There are certainly people in the industry who genuinely care, but they have no choice but to work for cutthroat monsters who are millionaires and have a bottom line that must be met with bodies in beds on a constant rotation. Fresh meat is the key, and relapse is almost congratulated. In my three weeks there, there was one fentanyl overdose and two relapses in one of the houses. Certain clients are allowed to overstay their needed treatment time as long as there isn't a new patient needing a bed at a higher level of care which, of course, brings in more money per day or, per, "Unit," which is how insurance companies dole out authorizations. If you're thinking about rehab, I really don't have any advice because they all play the same games and all use the same tired lines to get you there such as, "We got you.. Don't worry.." The people who are incharge of getting admissions to agree to come are very well trained and coached in the proper lines to use to disarm any hesitation you may have and allay any fears or doubts you may have. This was only my second rehab, and I saw enough in this time to realize very clearly what goes on after spending time on the phone with my insurance company and hearing the cold tone used by the administrator in delivering the devastating news that the entire thing was a mistake and I was on the losing end of it. She said they weren't happy about, "Having to eat the cost of my entire stay," and to that I say GOOD! These rehabs have entire departments to deal with verifying insurance, yet they badly botched my approval for care and didn't catch it until I had been there three weeks and was just beginning to get the root of my issue. Rehab is about money, and you have to be your own advocate because nobody at these facilities is looking out for you. Even if they are a kind-hearted person and really want to help you out, their hands are tied by the almighty dollar and the people who demand a fresh crop of bodies in beds constantly to keep the money flowing. And it was told to us repeatedly by case workers that the length of your stay is completely dependent upon how creative the case workers are in their weekly assessments of your progress and condition. If they like you, they'll work their magic. If you demand anything of them or give any kind of push back, they'll make sure your stay is short. Watch Body Brokers, and you'll understand. It's definitely one of those experiences where hard-working people can start to think, "Dang, I'm in the wrong racket... I need to get in on this grift."

Their…read moreemployee who picked me up from the airport was (allegedly) hitting a dab pen and took me to what I was told over the phone would be a "thorough intake process" was really a breathalyzer and UA. The person doing my "intake" asked me which program I was here for - I told him nobody told me and shouldn't he know?? The admissions person I spoke with over the phone said I would have "chef made meals". I was dropped off at a Vons with a $75 gift card to buy groceries for the week. As someone with a dual diagnosis, this was incredibly misleading and resulted in me not eating for 24 hours. The same admissions person said "the home i would be in would have shared rooms, but plenty of bathrooms". I arrived to the house which had 1 bathroom shared among 7 women. Sadly my time here only lasted 18 hours due to the fact that what was described to me over the phone was the exact opposite of what i walked into. Don't waste your time here. "House manager" or any WWR employee was not at the home I was assigned to when I arrived. It was 4 hours later that she showed up and was using her vape as a pointer while showing me the house rules. Not a single person here was professional or helpful - they just want your money. Bedspread on my bed was also COVERED in stains upon my arrival.

In the full review, I write about a specific event in which Akua went above and beyond expectations to take care of me, proving that they truly do not treat clients as just bodies to be profited off of. Any of my friends that tell me they are struggling I will be sending here. If you are shopping around for options, it doesn't get much better than this. FULL REVIEW: Wow. What a Godsend of a program. I really cannot believe how lucky I was to find this place when I did. I was in a pretty rough spot; I knew I needed to go back in for treatment and I felt hopeless because every rehab I was calling around to in OC no longer accepted my insurance (great stuff, America). Finally Akua comes up in my never-ending search. They are one of two rehabs left in OC that still take my insurance. Even still, I am hesitant to commit because the last place I was at ended up being a nightmare (terrible food, uncomfortable beds, a therapist that was incredibly dismissive and apathetic, staff forgetting to take people to important doctors meetings, the list goes on). I call Akua, they tell me that they have their groups focusing on trauma-processing, personalized therapy, emotional support, and they dabble in less traditional therapeutic practices like yoga, & sound baths. SOLD! Come get me NOW! I was in the substance abuse side. The groups were diverse, legitimately helpful, not all straight out of the AA book; a program where the intention was to dissect, understand, and get to the emotional root of why we as people can't seem to drink or use drugs like a normal person can, not just straight "drugs are bad don't do them" D.A.R.E. propaganda. This difference in approach was absolutely critical for someone like me. The house was clean, the food was great, like actually great not just rehab-great, they took us out on different outings, went to the movie theaters twice, barbecued every weekend, legitimately enjoyed myself, and made some friends I hope to keep for life. The staff was so lovely, I want to specifically give shoutouts to Amber (love you girl miss you!!!), Mel, Clarice (if you're reading this, I hope the lambs have stopped screaming), Justin, and Garret, I looked forward to hanging out with them everyday. They all work so so so hard, they've got a lot more daily tasks as day-time techs than I have seen at any other treatment center, and they still would find the time to get to know us and tolerate our buffoonery. If you're an insomniac like me, you'll get to meet the nighttime tech Holly, a total vibe & a hard worker who was helping keep the place nice and clean all on his own volition. My therapist Paul was fantastic. My case manager Robbie is the coolest guy and helped me to get into a sober-living house and set me up in a program where a non-profit would help pay 2/3 of my rent so long as I was in Akua's outpatient program, DEFINITELY take advantage of this yall. Now there's one extra specific detail I want to recount because it proves to me just how different this place is from other treatment centers. When I left residential, I was slated to go to a certain sober living I will not be naming, and when I showed up they had me do a UA test, and the detox medications were still showing up in my system (a very normal thing to happen). I am immediately accused by this man of being high, I try to tell him to talk to my case manager who will show him my lab test results proving that my numbers have been steadily going down since I detoxed. He basically refuses and tells me to kick rocks. I call my case manager in tears, and he immediately sends the head of IOP to come and grab me. Akua let me stay an extra two days in residential, completely out of their own pocket, while finding me another sober-living to move into. I could not believe it. Any other program would NEVER have gone to this length to ensure I was safe, especially since they are losing money doing this. I will never fully be able to express how grateful I am for this. I was in Akua's outpatient program for a total of 4 months. This program helped to establish some structure and routine within my life while getting reintroduced to society (gross) and planning next-steps career wise. Richard, the head of IOP, is incredible, I would sometimes skip out on my therapy sessions to make sure that I got to listen to his groups. Karen, Gabby, Jolene, and Q are all fantastic and very deeply-caring, they lead great groups as well. My case manager Candace is one of the most lovely people ever, and she always kept me in check and called me on my BS. I have run out of words Yelp will let me write, and I want to keep going! I love this program! Akua made me a better man!

And because a five-star review would feel curated for performance instead of written in truth. The truth is... Treehouse is an experience I will never forget. It is also not for everyone. I didn't come to Treehouse looking for recovery. I came because I was running out of time. By the time I arrived, the damage was already real. My body was failing. My mind was loud. My spirit was thin. I wasn't carrying hope, I was carrying consequences. Medical. Relational. Moral. I didn't believe I deserved another chance. I wasn't even sure I could survive one. Treehouse didn't ask me to believe. They asked me to stay. The early days weren't inspiring. They were brutal. I couldn't eat. I couldn't sleep. I collapsed. I shook. I hallucinated. Every morning felt like a resurrection. Every night felt like a funeral. And people I didn't know yet showed up anyway, quietly, practically, without speeches or slogans. Treehouse didn't erase my past. They taught me how to carry it without letting it poison what comes next. I don't live perfectly now. I live aligned. I know my values. I know my patterns. I know what steadies me and what costs me. I show up differently. To work, my body, other people, and myself. If you're looking for comfort, this may not be the place. If you're looking for truth, structure, and a program that will ask more of you than you think you can give, and stay with you while you give it, this place matters.
