However, she rarely actually did anything other than ask about my week and how I feel. She never stuck to any new "tool" or "method" we would try. I would do everything she asked of me, from filling out busywork to doing walks to talking to people I didn't want to. I even voluntarily surrendered to my greatest fear of being locked up in a hospital. She gave me her number and told me not to call hotlines because they would leave me on hold. But she would ignore almost every call or text made until I stopped even trying. After a week or two of any approach she'd give up, only to months later accuse me of "never really trying" to improve. She would also complain about my negativity and low self esteem, only to tell me all my problems are my fault and if I only tried harder I would be fine. For context, much of my issues regarded depression, incurable medical issues, and the death of my father. But she consistently framed things as my fault. Despite all this, I stuck with her for three years because I appreciated her being candid and friendly. What most therapists wouldn't do for fear of being unprofessional, she was fine with. She'd call us friends, joke around with me, she'd even said if I didn't want to work on improvement I could just vent and talk to her once a week. But then, in the first few minutes of my last session, she told me she wouldn't work with me anymore. No prior discussion had been had, and very little explanation was offered. She sent a list of names I don't know and offered one single session to process. And when my car broke down, she refused to reschedule that session, and only assured me she'd done her due diligence. When I asked if I'd done something wrong, she told me I hadn't. She'd just snubbed me for no reason I guess. I can't imagine this is the best way to handle that situation for any therapist. But for one I've seen for three years and always spoke to me candidly, I was especially surprised at such a curt and cold snubbing. I can't speak for the other therapists here, but the one I've seen hasn't made a great example. The receptionist has always been very kind, though

H.O.P.E. Counseling helped my family through a very difficult time. We were enduring domestic…read morecrisis that impacted the behaviour of my young son. He was mimicking violent behaviours witnessed in a domestic violence situation, including attacking his parental figures and threatening others with violence when he did not get his way. My partner and I entered him into H.O.P.E. Counseling's Day Treatment Program in place of preschool, to address our fears that these violent behaviours would continue into his interactions with children his own age. We also began a psycho-social skill rehabilitation program where a skills teacher came to the home multiple times a week, as well as one-on-one and group family therapy with a therapist. The entire program worked fantastically at addressing the post-traumatic stress suffered by both me and my son, as well as helping him understand the reasons for his violent behaviour and the reasons why that violent behaviour had to cease. We have had no violent incidences in over a year. Our son is now functioning well within an advanced studies program at a Magnet school. He has made friends with a number of his classmates and has grown to be an empathic, loving, and compassionate child who dislikes bullying and who does not threaten to get his way. I could not be more thrilled or more thankful to H.O.P.E. Counseling.

She has patiently worked with me while having a flexible schedule, no judgement, compassion, and kindness. I also love that we could work together in the comfort of my own home. Every meeting brings up new things that I am emotionally working through. I felt extremely comfortable with her every step of the way. She understands loss and the process of grief, though different for everyone she makes space to understand yours. She helps explore your emotional grief patterns and assists by showing tools that can help you more deeply understand your own needs and responses. Grief is such a deep challenging emotional ride. It was leading me into a lot of confusion and difficulties in my daily tasks. I waited 6 months after the loss of my mother to even google search grief therapy. This is due to the overall lack of progress following years of therapy and dredging up my past - only to be left with the pain again and nearly as ill equipped as when I began. I knew full well going into Grief Recovery that I'd have to face a plethora of heartache all over again, which was was terrifying. That being said, swallowing my pride (and prejudice toward "recovery" in general), was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I'm not going to sugar coat it, this is hard work. Be prepared to dig deep. Be ready to learn about yourself and your experiences. Most of all, brace yourself for a genuinely supportive and empathetic environment, and being shown the utmost compassion. I never would've imagined that those eight weeks could have such lasting improvements in my memory of all things, but also a renewed and far more relatable understanding of grief itself. I practice what I've learned every day, which has benefited every aspect of my life. Whatever losses bring you here, whether it be the death of loved ones or divorce, just the overwhelming sense of validity and comfort is worth it. Trust doesn't come easily to me, but was well earned throughout my experience with Grief Recovery and with Jennifer, who without a doubt is destined to change so many more lives like mine. I'm forever grateful and again, can confidently say this was one of the most rewarding decisions I've ever made.
