First off I had no idea they added pickleball courts and was impressed at the 8 very nice courts and good level of competition. The format took a little getting used to as it appeared to have been 4 on, 4 off. I could tell there were a lot of regulars here and everyone really came to play. I wish I could've played here again but I guess it will have to wait until my next visit.

The parking lot by the pickle ball courts were full so we turned around and parked at the community center. So much better with ample open spaces and no waiting. Recommend coming here first if one arrives on a weekend afternoon. It was about five minutes or so walk down to the pickle ball court from the community center. The pickle ball courts were first come first served and were full that day. Lots of kids were also playing in the nearby playground. Similarly lots of dogs were enjoying their freedom in the off leash section of the park. We stopped by a small beach already occupied by a couple of sun bathers. Views towards Meydenbauer Bay in Bellevue on the right and east Seattle on the left. We headed to the wetlands walk as our final stop as it roughly led us in the direction of the community center. It was peaceful here with duck families swimming around. A few eagles were also nesting inside with lots of warning signage but we did not catch a sight of any. Nicer restroom facilities were available in the community center but also by the pickle ball courts if needed.

If you are planning to visit and not handicap please use the "west" parking lot. Just a heads up there is a sign we saw after we had already been there for hours. When we came a family was having a birthday party in the gazebo. It looked like a great place to have a party. The place is fenced in and good for 2 year olds and up. Shade is great in the summer. Hidden picnic table by the dragon. We brought a pizza :)

The trail down on the right side (when facing the park) is much more steep and snakes around, while the trail on the left side is shorter with a slighter incline/decline. I'd recommend heading up or down from the left end unless you're an avid hiker. While both paths are paved, the space could really benefit from some beautification or sculptures, although it was very quiet and peaceful. There is an odd little pit on the left side with quite a bit of seating, but it's not clear if it was once used for bonfires or if it's meant as a sand pit for children. Either was it was a nice little hike with a gorgeous view.

The sand area was great for the kids to be able to play with their sand toys, there are lifejackets that you can rent for the kids who like to jump off the dock into the water, and it's just a great viewing area to watch all of the planes. There was even an area with a net set up for beach volleyball, which my kids appreciated. The bathrooms were well maintained, and there is a small playground up the hill for a nice change of pace.

The trial winds through a few thickets, a small bog, a terrific stand of old growth firs and follows a brook that eventually becomes a glorified trench. Plenty of small wild life includes squirrels, rabbits, red-winged black birds, ducks, sparrows chickadees and woodpeckers. While a few signs warned of bob cat, mountain lion and bears (really, in Bellevue?) what I found in most proliferation was the wild and well coiffed Eastside MILF commonly found gazing in Bellevue, Issaquah and Redmond. Both lakes are quite serene and larger than you might suppose. A great in-city adventure, I got in 5 miles of brisk urban hiking. Check Bellevue Park Dept.for various well marked trail heads.

Maybe there was a bathroom facility but maybe because the park is so vast I just couldn't locate it. I took a quick trip QFC down the street to use the bathroom there because I really had to go, got some yummy samples and a couple items from the produce section and went back to my short walk in the park and doing a quick yoga flow! If you want a no thrills park experience, Pioneer Park will not disappoint!

Pioneer Park is actually several quadrants of parkland divided by roads. One of these requires dogs…read moreto be on-leash (I think it's the NE quadrant). The others require voice control but I have never seen an off-leash dog that had perfect voice control. Myself and my neighbors have all had our dogs attacked by off-leash dogs here, so beware. There is a mountain lion that periodically lives in this area since the island deer population is out of control. Also some owls that can get aggressive near their nests. The trails are nice and people are usually good about trail etiquette. I wish the city would completely prohibit off-leash dogs though since voice control doesn't really perfectly exist for any dog. Also, horse riders use some of the park trails and they are not required to wear rump bags to catch manure. Horse manure lasts forever and can be toxic to dogs who will try and eat it. The city should require horse riders to wear rump bags the same way it requires dog owners to pick up dog poop. The south end of the Island doesn't have a fenced dog park, so it would be nice if some of Pioneer Park could be converted to a fenced dog park.
