Very cool shop, lots of unique finds very similar to like a habitat store. Some of the prices were even better but for any of the things that were like higher-end it was more expensive than habitat. Truth be told I wasn't even sure if Second Use Building Materials was even open to the public and was a store. I have parked here and walked by here plenty of times but it didn't look open to shoppers but Steve encouraged me to see if we could go inside. I was very surprised by the large inventory! Huge selection of used doors and lights for sale. It's one of those places that if you browse long enough you will find something you would want. I spotted old lockers from a gym or a school and for an art project I am concocting it may be useful for future reference to purchase. Trouble is I don't have that much space at our home for something like this. This store even has a rack of customized t shirts representing the store which I found to be cool. I am definitely a clothes horse. Good place to go to get ideas for customizing or items to remodel your home or in my case items good for art projects even. read more

This place has a lot of materials you might think to buy from a store, but before taking on a project I recommend visiting. You never know. They had sinks, cabinets, hardware, lighting fixtures, stone and marble. All kinds of things for small house related projects. Wear a coat, this place is basically a big open, unheated warehouse. The also don't provide delivery service, so if you're thinking about getting something sizeable, you'll need to consider your own options. Well they message companies asking for quotes to move cabinets this costs money (in this case it cost led me 15$) you reply to their messages and they ignore you. Me and my partner both got a request for estimates (we have moving two separate companies) come to find out we both got ignored so pretty much 30$ down the drain. read more

I love this beaten up building on Fawcett Street in Tacoma. I peruse the newest stuff, taken out of old buildings or newer houses that people are renovating. This week they had used bowling ally wood that could be beautifully repurposed to live a whole new life with someone that loves them. Our condo in Malibu burned in the 2018 wildfires and I have so much trudge work that has to be done this summer. When I found the store, I realized how much money we could save by renting a U-Haul and driving it down there. I bought two shoe cabinets for $15.00 that they held for me when I could get back there. They have furniture, crown molding, bathtubs, marble tops, etc. There is just too many items to describe here. Go to there website and look at both stores in Seattle and Tacoma. They did a great job hiring a worker there named Jonothon. How can a worker steer a customer out of an off limits area one minute, and then walk me through the place, and put some items I wanted to purchase on hold for me? He made sure he got my email address to keep me informed too. I was charmingly moved out of the worker's area by him - and at the same time, sharing his knowledge of how the mechanics of the store work, urging me to come back often for new merchandise, without me feeling "wronged" for going in the off limits area. That takes a special skill set from an employee that clearly has been trained well and really enjoys his job. Jonathon loves helping customers. That is why I shop at Second Use, and they will see me often during our rebuild next Summer. read more

I like this place for many reasons. I love the idea of being able to take building materials, doors, hardware, sinks, etc. that I'm getting rid of somewhere where they can be resold and someone else can use them. It keeps perfectly good things out of landfills and saves someone some money. I have also found some amazing bargains there, including a couple of Toto toilets, Grohe faucets, interesting wood slabs, a beautiful high end bathroom vanity, and many other wonderful finds.The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and everything is a bargain. You are able to receive credit for some things you bring in, which is an added bonus. read more

Prior to demolishing our house that was damaged in a landslide we asked Second Use to look at the building and give us an estimate on things that could be salvaged. They produced a list of items including several doors, light fixtures, coat racks etc. We agreed to the amount , which was around $900 lump sum. There was no itemized breakdown on the items. when the Second Use crew arrived on site it was discovered that two doors, which were on the list of items, had been damaged by burglars who had broken in prior to the salvage. We were informed that those doors were no longer of any value. As the removal proceeded the Second Use people asked about several items, mostly plumbing and light fixtures, that were not on the list and we agreed to add them to the salvage. We assumed that we would receive something resembling fair value for the added items. Instead we were paid a little over $400 for everything. Second Use claimed that the two doors were worth such a substantial percentage of the original $900 that none of the added items offset the value. Of course we realized that without itemized value on each item we were powerless to argue. So we took the $400 but it really felt like it was dishonest on the part of Second Use read more
