I respect her professionalism and the eloquence of her note, and therefore am submitting an edit to Yelp. My purpose in leaving the review(s) I wrote about the antiques shops/"malls" in this area was to save others the drive, the gas, the time, and the disappointment of this misrepresented area. My husband and I go antique-ing every weekend as we are avid collectors. I was an antiques dealer for many years in Grand Rapids, and find it misleading and disheartening when an area advertises itself as an antiques destination only to make a trip to the area and find mostly garage sale junk and one owner who told me the malls have to carry that because they can't survive selling true antiques (I would assert this isn't the case, and can provide a litany of true antiques malls in West Michigan). That being said, I have to applaud any antiques business owner in this area who strives to be a purist and supply true antiques to the area.

It's literally a vintage trove of things that if you're willing to dig around you can find something interesting. They carry everything from computers, decorative knickknacks, clothes, shelves, research equipment, furniture,etc.

There seems to be little staff turnover because I normally see the same people even though I shop there infrequently. I am usually "just browsing" and after a brief conversation with the person/persons who approached me, I am left alone to browse for as long as I like. I purchased a Homecrest patio set with swivel/sling style chairs at Heat 'N Sweep several years ago. This set has moved from Michigan, to my deck in Missouri and is now on my porch in Maine. Even with the moves, it has not required any type of adjustment. The chairs are the most comfortable patio chairs I have ever sat in. I clean them in the spring with soap and water and they still look like new. They were more expensive than the brands carried at other stores but the price was very reasonable for the quality of the product. I have been very pleased with my purchase. On one of my return trips to the area, I purchased a mosaic table and two chairs. I had always admired the sets when i browsed at the store and I wanted one for my front porch in Missouri. After determining that the purchase would fit into my vehicle, it was carefully wrapped and loaded by the friendly warehouse staff and made the trip to my front porch without a scratch. I was given a "thank you for your purchase" gift bag that contained a nice bottle of wine and some other items. Since then, I have added a bench and the plant stand and as always, have been very pleased with the quality. One time during a power outage shortly after I moved to Missouri, I called the store with questions about manually starting the gas insert in my fireplace that was normally controlled by an electrical switch. I was given step-by-step instructions over the phone and the staff member stayed on the phone with me until I had successfully started the fire. The unit obviously was not purchased from them but they still provided me with friendly, knowledgeable service. Because I live out of state, I'm unable to purchase several of the items that I admire when i stop in or peruse their web site. I'd love to own one of the Arctic spas and some of the Lloyd Flanders furniture that is on display. On one of my visits, there happened to be a cooking demonstration on one of the outdoor kitchens. The food was excellent and I added the unit to my "if i ever move back to Michigan, I want to buy that" list. If you do have the advantage of living in the area, I highly recommend checking out this store.

Absolute is a bit different from the other more trendy galleries popping up in Old Town. While the…read moreart work was beautiful, it seemed to be much more eclectic than the other art galleries and a bit more haphazardly placed... i.e. the store didn't seem to flow very well. However, that probably has to do with the wide variety of artists carried by Absolute. They seem to also feature custom framing, so if you're an artist or just a person with some art that needs a home, Absolute is a decent place to go. The owner was nice and said "hello" then commented briefly on the weather. Standout pieces of art included wooden framed maps of Michigan which were somewhat topographical, custom made clocks, and a beautiful hand crafted wooden rocking chair.

Absolute Gallery was the perfect place-- they were very patient with me and my back-and-forths on matting and mounting and everything. They helped me and my companion navigate the many framing options until we were completely satisfied. Two weeks later the frames were done, and they are just beautiful. Exactly what I was hoping for. I'm also very happy to support local businesses [and a little window-shopping on my way out of the store didn't hurt, either!] I will definitely return in the future, for gift shopping as well as any more framing I have done.
