I was taking the LIRR early Monday morning to visit my brother in Long Island. My go-to station…read morehad always been Penn, but Monday's train originated from Grand Central Madison. I'd never been -- the station is only three years old -- so I stopped by Sunday to (pardon the expression) 'case the joint out.' Good thing! I entered at Grand Central Station, followed signs and walked. Then walked some more. Took escalators, maybe an elevator. Finally ended up at ticketing. I don't think I would have allotted enough time if I hadn't known the layout beforehand. It was off hour. Not many people there. The customer service rep, a wonderful woman named Heather, wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing. She actually left her post to show me the tracks and helped me get my bearings. (Guess what! Heather was there Monday morning when I returned. I felt like I was seeing an old friend!) Here's a tip for everyone: If you don't want to deal with the underground labyrinth, look for the elevator on Madison off 47th Street. It'll take you directly down to ticketing and the waiting area. And specifically for older folks: To reap the senior discount, purchase your tickets the day of your trip, not before. There's no upcharge to buy tickets on the train. If I heard correctly, senior fares are the same for peak and off-peak -- but don't quote me on that! This station is light, bright, much quieter than Penn. Bathrooms are infinitely better. Now that I know what I'm doing, this may become my station of choice.

But I have to award five stars for the clean bathroom. Due to basic geography, the ride itself is faster than Penn, so maybe if they were starting in 1908 they would have built Penn Station here, but consider all the terminated or "maybe someday in theory" rail links it's nice that this thing actually got built.

It might sometimes be called Midtown - 57th Street in some references and is directly adjacent to Carnegie Hall. The station is completely handicapped accessible, which I found helpful today as I was dragging my rollaboard and not interested in going down a flight or two of stairs. Surprisingly, the elevator did NOT smell of pee! The mezzanine level has the usual fare controls including ticketing kiosks and turnstiles. There is another elevator down to the platform level. For a station that is over 100 years old (it opened in 1919), I found it reasonable clean and well lit. Better than many of the MTA stations on Manhattan. I get really impatient when I have to wait for the M train here. I usually wait at the front of the platform by cars 1 and 2 to Queens and you can just see the BQE highway below the train station with lots of traffic. The platform is also literally next to a billboard and you can just literally jump off the platform onto the billboard! Train station is above ground so you can see the Williamsburg bridge and BQE highway. Many new sky rises all over Williamsburg too that you can see from the train station. The bad thing about this station is that there are no elevators so it suck's to carry a baby stroller up and down the stairs. So unfortunate! Wow, what a huge and impressive building. This is what I found out about it…read more Moynihan Train Hall is more than a transit hub -- it's a Beaux‑Arts landmark, a public art gallery, and a family‑friendly destination with quirky details you won't find anywhere else in NYC. Moynihan Train Hall occupies the James A. Farley Building, once New York City's main post office, designed by McKim, Mead & White in 1914 to match the original Penn Station across Eighth Avenue . It's one of the city's great adaptive‑reuse stories -- the mail‑sorting halls are now a train concourse, while the USPS still operates a post office there. Inside it has a skylight the size of an acre! The Main Concourse's 92‑foot‑high skylight spans an acre of glass, made up of 3,160 individual panels set in complex 3D steel geometrics. It floods the hall with natural light day and night. Hanging 25 feet above the floor in the Main Concourse is a 12‑foot‑tall, 6‑foot‑wide clock weighing almost 5,000 pounds. Its installation was a major engineering feat. The "The Hive" by Elmgreen & Dragset suspends dozens of illuminated high‑rise buildings up to 16 feet tall from the vaulted ceiling at the 31st Street Midblock Entry Hall -- a surreal, upside‑down cityscape. The hall is named after Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who was a longtime advocate for expanding Penn Station and improving NYC's rail infrastructure. Both the old Penn Station and the Farley Building were designed by McKim, Mead & White in the Beaux‑Arts style, making Moynihan a modern "twin" to the 1910 rail landmark.

My Amtrak train departed an hour later than scheduled and reached Moynihan about 10 minutes before the station's 1 a.m. closing time. Train delays have become so frequent in my experience that arriving on time feels like the exception. When we arrived, every restroom was closed. Some passengers had skipped the restroom on the train, reasonably expecting to use one at the station before heading to their final destination. I expect restaurants to be closed at that hour, but I don't expect all the restrooms to be unavailable while trains are still arriving. I understand the station may have reasons for limiting access overnight. The outside doors were already locked, though, so closing every restroom to arriving passengers felt excessive. At least one restroom near the arrivals area should remain open until the last train arrives and passengers have had a chance to leave. I've enjoyed this station on other visits. This time, the delayed train and lack of a basic amenity made for an unpleasant end to the trip.
