I'll admit that upon hearing a recommendation from a sun-drenched surfer that a place called the Stunned Mullet was "the place for dinner in Port," (prefaced by a hearty and deal-sealing "aww mate"), I was a bit, how to say, skeptical. In all my years of mullet hunting, I'd never found one that made me think "you know what, that's *so* inspiring, I'm going to open a restaurant in its name. But names aside, hell, names included, The Stunned Mullet is a complete winner. I've been twice in the last two months. And I live five hours away. Different each time, the menu focused on a few fresh, seasonal mains and a handfull of entrees. (The confit duck leg with truffled desire mash and sour cherry reduction, the seared and Szechwan-glazed kangaroo fillet and the Prosciutto-wrapped and gorgonzola-stuffed figs were standouts. I mean, I'll bet your drooling just reading that. I am.) The wine list dwarfs the menu with an incredible selection from the hyperlocal to regional to worldwide wines and beers. I became giddy when I saw three Oregon wines on the "from afar" section. It's an absolutely beautiful list and worth going just for that. The amazing food? Oh, that's just yet another perk. Consider it the business in front to the wine's party in the rear. If this is what all modern Australian mullets are like, sign me up.

Really great sushi rolls! I had a hankering for some sushi and suggested Maki Moto to my group…read moreafter seeing the reviews here. Everyone was really impressed and raved about the food here afterwards so phew! We got a bunch of rolls and shared them across 6 people. The rolls are huge too, I'm from Toronto and our rolls are much smaller than the ones here so I was like "whoah, these look filling!". The only one that seemed to be less popular among my group was the cooked tuna and avocado roll because it seemed "canned tuna-esque" tasting. Probably would've been tastier if it was a raw tuna instead. And it's too bad they didn't have chirashi available other than at lunch as that's usually my go-to dish at sushi restaurants.

We randomly picked Maki Moto for dinner this evening because we saw that there were a few people…read morelining up to eat there. We were seated quickly at the bar, and after taking some time to flag down a busy waitress to take our order, after about 5 minutes food started appearing. We ordered; *Fresh Salmon Carpaccio ($15.90) - We are big Carpaccio fans and were delighted to see four options to pick from! We chose Salmon because we are massive salmon fans and this dish was quite good. *Deep Fried Soft-shell Crab ($12.90) - Soft-shell crab is one of the more occasional items we order from Japanese restaurants, but we are certainly glad we did. This was really tasty and came with a generous serve of special mayo sauce. (I'm sorry I didn't get a photo of this - we ate it too fast!). *Dynamite Roll ($17.90) - One thing that I was really impressed with was the generous fillings in their rolls. I watched a chef put "a tonne" of meat/filling into their rolls... I ended up taking a photo demonstrating this. The roll itself was good, but could have been a little more spicy for my taste ;) *Teriyaki Chicken ($22.90) - The stand out winner. We picked this based off the other Yelp review that mentioned it. My wife jokingly swore when she tasted how good it was. *Miso ($2.50) - Standard side miso. *Japanese Tea ($3.50) - I ordered this expecting just to get a cup of tea and was surprised to receive a little pot, 2 cups. This was enough for 3-4 glasses of tea! yay! *** OVERALL: very impressed with Maki Moto and will happily come back and recommend this place to people. I'm actually keen to share this with a friend whose family live in Port Macquarie. Well done guys! We ordered 4 items (3 starter'ish things, 1 main) and 2 extras and our Total Bill came to $75.60. Which was alright/average for the amount of food we got - still very happy.

The big family knees-up dinner we had at this place was a 3-star good. It's a lovely fitout, dark and classy with an open balcony looking out onto the blue, blue ocean, as blue as ol' Blue Eyes' eponymous peepers. The North Coast is a luvverly place, but come the busy season I think they get casual staff in to deal with the demand - the lady we had did her level best but the Fawlty Towers theme music was playing somewhere in the background. The meals... well, there's an old Italian nonna in the kitchen saying "Ehhh, you too skinny!" because they are HUGE, like Hulk Hogan sized, just giant hearty servings. My garlic prawns were tasty, the salt and pepper calamari were the biggest rings I've ever seen, and really beautifully spiced, and the garlic bread and bruschetta were delicious too. The head of the table wasn't super keen on the lamb cutlets or the paella, which toed the risotto line and was caught in no man's land, but the T-bone got destroyed with vim and vigour. Will be sitting on the balcony next time.
