There's no restroom on location that's open on the weekend (and whether one is available to the public during the week is questionable). But it's downright beautiful. I've never seen so many different conifers in one place. Even their cones and how they presented were different. Some stuck straight up, some dipped down, some were small, some big - just absolutely fascinating. The areas outside the conifer section were a bit on the neglected side however. A few of the branches and bushes could have used a trim and a couple of the trail openings between flora were almost totally grown over. It appears as if the space might be used for weddings in the Summer and not well maintained after August. All in all, my advice would be if you're going to visit, do so knowing there's not much here and plan your trip accordingly.

In the 2026 carnival, the food booths and vendor booths are same as every other festival (I go to many). The 'carnival' has crafty, homemade type of games and designed for children, limited to 5 feet and under. There are two bands on separate stages. The coolest aspects are in the neighborhood itself as I admire murals on the walls. We wandered in somewhere that had free viewing of movies that were made by handheld-cameras; that was unusual though not necessarily enjoyable. The best part was finding bathrooms to use. I doubt I will prioritize revisiting in future years.

It has similar appeal for me to the Ballard SeafoodFest, which interestingly moved their event up to the same weekend this year. It is a neighborhood celebration. Like Ballard, the businesses in the Junction all seem to embrace the festival. Many of businesses tend to hold sidewalk sales. The one I am most fond of is the Easy Street Records used CD sale. Three CDs for $5! It is a treasure hunt finding a treasure in a sea of crap. I think this is the only place I could justify buying say, a Jessica Simpson CD, if I wanted to. There is the usual vendor and food booths that you expect to see at other festivals which are okay. I kind of prefer Ballard in this regard. As it is held at the height of summer, it can get pretty scorching so be prepared to hydrate when perusing. Live music is also a component of the festival. There are two stages and the bands playing here are of pretty decent quality for a neighborhood festival. Nothing like Capitol Hill Block Party, but this is a free event. What do you expect? U2. Uh uh. All in all, Summer Fest is a pretty decent event. If you have not visited West Seattle recently, this is one of the best times to go and revisit this quaint neighborhood.

Located on a busy road, it's easy to drive past without noticing, but inside is the history of Puget Sound and the indiginous people who live here. There is no fee to enter. At first I thought it was a gift shop, but several displays with artifacts and photos are to your right. There is a lot of information regarding the original topography, before civil engineers rerouted rivers and installed dams. It also documents how this activity contributed to the demise of some Duwamish people who relied on these waterways for food.. Artifacts include hunting and fishing gear, hand made baskets, herbs used medicinally and fibers used to make cloth are on display with information on how they are used. Very interesting. A lesson on living off the land. Inside the longhouse are photographs and a canoe you can checkout. This longhouse is built as the communal longhouses of the past were with an elevated platform around the edges that would have been used for sitting and sleeping. It's a beautiful space. After we read all the info (there's a lot of info) and looked at all the artifacts we browsed the gift shop and made a few purchases. They have a variety of artisan made products including beautiful blankets, jewelry, note cards and wall art among other things. We chatted with the staff member as we made our purchases. She answered a few questions we had and we chatted about family. She was very pleasant. This is a good stop for learning local history and purchasing local art.

We had never gone until this past weekend, though, when they held a craft fair. The longhouse is located very near the industrial port area, on the opposite side of Marginal Way, and is very nicely built (wood) yet small. There are two rooms, that we know. The first houses a museum of sorts. In the second was where they put the crafts and behind that is a small kitchen where they were selling a few items, including the hottest item (basically everyone came for this), the frybread. We felt honored to be hosted by the Duwamish. We picked up a beautiful beaded hummingbird. The reason I do not give five stars is because the space was so small, which made browsing the crafts very difficult. Normally I would have liked to learn so much more about each vendor and their items yet here you were lucky if you could even squish close enough to see or buy anything. A couple of vendor spots were less populated, I think because what they had on offer was less of an "easy" sell - gorgeous ledger art and handmade drums. Recommend a visit.

Often, screaming, laughing, crying, or any combination of the three can be heard from the little ones. TIP #1 - Come during the week before Spring Break (for Seattle Public Schools). It's always filled with kids but believe it or not, sometimes there are less kids. TIP #2 - Make enough time for your kids to run around and buy a wristband. Believe me, it will be the best $7.50 you will ever spend. The tickets only make sense if you are literally going to be there for only 15 minutes (which is rarely the case with kids). TIP #3 - Stay out of the way. Set up a spot where your child can find you and develop a safety protocol for all situations. Depending on when you are there, you will feel like you're on a NY subway, what with all the bumping, stepping, pushing and shoving. While my child is running and jumping around with friends, I am catching up with my friends or grabbing a bite to eat. The Armory has decent food now, but if you're trying to save a few bucks, you can bring your own food. Parking is always an issue around Seattle Center. Most street spots, if you find them are either metered or have 2 hour limits. TIP #4 - If you're going to eat at The Armory anyway, the food vendors will validate 2 hours parking in the Seattle Center garages. Remember, Whirligig typically runs for around 2 weeks or so. Make an event of it and plan a huge play date. Your kid will love it. The only downside is they won't let grownups ride (trust me, I've tried).
