As a preschool teacher, I have had many experiences visiting and having fire fighters visit my preschool.
Today, by far, has been the best. They let students touch everything: the truck, fire hose, lights, mask, helmet, boots, air tank, pike pole. We went through the fire truck and students were respected as preschoolers, who are inquisitive and learn through their bodies.
David and Annie talked to our students like real people, not drill sergeants, making them stand in a line, be quiet or keep their hands behind their backs.
The first question Fire Fighter David had was, "How old are your students?" He and Annie also answered questions by looking at the student who asked it.
They showed us the dining room, desks, locker room and where all of the uniforms are kept.
When Annie put on her uniform, they talked about how "cool" it was instead of talking about how scary it is. They seem to really understand small kids and what they will understand.
