The Seattle Fire department chooses whether you get Medic one or a pay for-profit AMR ambulance service without a person knowing. I called Medic One and they had no idea that they received funding via a property tax levy (refer below). They receive funding but they are only dispatched if they choose to go? I'm aware of a situation where in an emergency they sent the pay for profit AMR service which charged over $2500 to transport a king county resident from south seattle to harborview in a medical emergency. They stated on the phone that they don't know anything about who gets which service - paid for Medic One or you pay ambulance and why. By dialing 9-1-1, callers have immediate access to the system and its excellent medical care, regardless of location, circumstances, or time of day. The Medic One program was started in Seattle in the early 1970s. It now serves a region of nearly 2.3 million in population, and responds on average every 2 minutes to a medical emergency.

And in the quest for the answer, the world's first paramedics came to be. Partnering with the Seattle Fire Department because of their already established coverage of the city, and the firemen's willingness to help those in need - Medic One's first paramedic class went in service in the city of Seattle in March of 1970. Since that day the people who live in Seattle have been able to count on an extension of Harborview's ER showing up at their door within 5 minutes - day or night, no matter the problem.
