Within about a month of moving in, the facility attempted to increase her level of care, an additional $500 a month to assist with showering and dressing. At no point was my mother in need of assistance to shower or to dress, and the facility was told. I was told the executive director would be in touch and as of 12/10/2025, I have not been contacted by anyone regarding the supposed need for increase level of care and therefore increase in monthly cost. I don't know what the reason was to try to get more money a month, but surely they knew there was a sale in the works. Very disappointing. Also, disappointing was our discussing prior to move-in how important it was that my mother was able to go on outings/excursions. We were told their bus was not wheelchair accessible, but they were working on it. I found through research that the bus had not been in use since approximately 2022. I was also told, in writing, they were going to suggest my mother participate in at least 50% of the activities offered. Not once has my mother been encouraged to engage in activities. I realize the facility closing may render opinions moot, but maybe it acts as encouragement to do more in depth research on a facility.

The quality of care at Sunrise has declined significantly in the past few years. There are some caring and hard working staff, but overall there is a lack of teamwork on the part of the staff. Cleanliness has also suffered. In memory care, the residents are placed around a TV for most of the day, with little variety of activity or recognition of the needs of individuals. There is poor communication both from the care managers and from the administration. My mother who was a long time resident had 2 episodes of defensive behavior a couple months ago, after which administration was quick to require additional outside sitters at considerable cost. These incidents were not unusual for dementia patients, according to Sunrise staff and outside consultants. Despite no additional events, Sunrise required mandatory discharge after 30 days notice and significantly increased her care level and expense during her remaining stay. We are fortunate to have found a much better place for Mom to live, where people actually care about the residents and give them the respect and care that they need.

They are not receiving the care and kindness and thoughtfulness needed by a hospice facility. Why I chose James River? Simple. On their website they posted personal letters, written by patients and their family. From the first phone call you felt warmth, compassion and a can do attitude. There was never a question too small or trivial. Never a time when you felt you were a bother. Just the admitting kindness alone was a weight off of our hearts. Thank you Mary. Unfortunately, my loved one never made it out of the hospital and into the loving care of James River. However, when I am in need if home hospice care again, this is the only place I will choose.

In just the last 3 months alone, their negligence has resulted in her being rushed to the hospital 5 separate times. The staff consistently fails to provide the most basic, life-sustaining care. She has suffered from severe, life-threatening dehydration and preventable UTIs because the staff simply will not offer her water or change her adult diapers for hours on end. There have been days she was left slumped over and unresponsive in her wheelchair all day, and the staff never even bothered to call her emergency contact. Basic hygiene, like scheduled showers and washing her hair, is ignored for weeks at a time. The turnover is incredibly high, the aides are completely overworked, and management's promises to do better are completely empty. We have officially filed complaints with the Virginia Department of Health and the State Ombudsman. Do not trust this facility with someone's life.

The grounds were well maintained and manicured, the parking was ample and the entrance was welcoming. The foyer opened up to a large rotunda with a baby grand piano and lots of cozy sofas and chairs. Initially, there was no one at the front desk to greet us so we meandered around looking for assistance. A woman saw us and came over to help us find our friend. Off to the right was the big dining room and the residents were having supper. A lovely sea of silver headed seniors all looked our way to smile and say hello to us! We found our table and enjoyed a lovely conversation with our friend and she introduced us to two more sweet elderly ladies with whom she shared meals. The tables were spacious and club chairs were cushioned and comfy. They commented how kind the staff was and that the food was pretty good. Tonight they served hot dogs and fries, with pie and sherbet for dessert. We asked how they liked their living here, and they all agreed it was comfortable, clean and efficient. There are several floors, but they are all accessible from the main floor. The residents have cute little apartments/suites with their own kitchenette, bathroom, sleeping quarters and sitting room. Our friend showed us her place which was immaculate and well appointed with personal items. Some of the rooms have balconies where residents can have a small garden. She showed us the laundry room and the game room. This facility keeps their residents busy and active. Our friend said it was a little pricey to live here, but the quality of care is worth it! We look forward to visiting these dear ones again soon!!

Over a period of approximately 30 days, I was visited by a RN about a dozen times to tend to my needs. Nurses visiting me were Meg, Amy, Missy, Danni, and Debbie. Each was professional and personable. One nurse who visited me 2 or 3 times had a strong John Rolfe redolence on her first visit; not noticeable on subsequent visits. But the care she gave was first rate, same for the other nurses. And the best part was that Medicare covered all expenses. :) I believe they offer more services than just house calls, so I anticipate contacting this week to see if they can/will serve as my PCP.

I met with her nurse and the social worker during her care. My concerns were blown off and not addressed. When my mother passed I was not contacted by this company to let me know of her passing. I found it very unprofessional and simply cruel. Never again would I use or recommend this company. I have had to use hospice care for loved ones before this and never been treated with such disrespect.
