The staff has all been VERY friendly and helpful - and this is a Holiday weekend, so that says a lot. The facility is clean. The residents are friendly. So far the food at the restaurant has been quite good. The facility has lots of seating as you walk through, which is great because it gives residents a break as they walk through the halls AND it gives them an opportunity to sit down and people watch. Who doesn't like to people watch? (I'll admit that it's my favorite part about Vegas) Like I said, it's only been a couple of days. I'll make it a point to update my review when we've 'been around the block' a little more!

There are some caring and hard working staff, but overall there is a lack of teamwork on the part of the staff. Cleanliness has also suffered. In memory care, the residents are placed around a TV for most of the day, with little variety of activity or recognition of the needs of individuals. There is poor communication both from the care managers and from the administration. My mother who was a long time resident had 2 episodes of defensive behavior a couple months ago, after which administration was quick to require additional outside sitters at considerable cost. These incidents were not unusual for dementia patients, according to Sunrise staff and outside consultants. Despite no additional events, Sunrise required mandatory discharge after 30 days notice and significantly increased her care level and expense during her remaining stay. We are fortunate to have found a much better place for Mom to live, where people actually care about the residents and give them the respect and care that they need.

While there she was dropped, left in a chair for unacceptable amounts of time (after telling me she was sitting for sometime an hour in a half I came and sat with her) I got up after 45 minutes and found everyone around the nurse's station on their phones and talking. Director of Nursing would never speak to us though requested on multiple occasions. Social worker was less than helpful. And head of facility avoided us. Not to mention the receptionist was down right rude. The most stressed I have ever experienced was while she was there. It was awful. I would never put anyone I love there again.

Kathy DeStories responded to my inquiry & I went into detail telling her what happened, what I currently pay per month, and what my budget was. She scheduled me for a tour. When I went into the main location (they have several buildings), the receptionist was not friendly. After signing in/temperature check, I was told where to find Kathy. I went to her office & we talked and talked and talked. Then she showed me the pricing sheet which was way over my budget!!!! Why would you have me drive all this way and then show me something almost $2k over what I'm paying??? Ugh!!! She apologized and then said she forgot that sometimes they have companion rooms...???? Not sure how she forgot, but ok. That price was closer to what I paid, so she took me for a tour in their Parkside building (memory care unit). It wasn't as updated as I expected especially for what they are charging but anyway. We walked around & there was a resident walking around and he popped Kathy's butt a few times. Ummm, if that happened to MY granny, she's gonna hit him with the uppercut. I promise him that. Anyway, we kept walking around and as we did, some parts of the unit wreaked of urine and feces. They need to clean and keep the residents clean/dry. Come on now!! We went back to her office & she gave me all the paperwork. I was shocked that before you complete the normal application, you have to complete a financial one which includes giving them copies of your bank statements and whatnot. They are nosier than Social Services. I don't know many people who can financially afford these places but need them to take care of their family member. No matter what a bank account shows, they still have to pay it. So, I decided to continue looking. I want to make sure she is in a place I can trust to keep her safe and protected as well as clean/dry. I have and would highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a peaceful, caring, and stress free place to live. Some of the reasons for my love of SMW are: 1. It is owned and managed by the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, which gives me a great deal of comfort knowing that they will never take advantage of me in any way, and they truly have MY best interests in mind always. 2. It is open to all, with no restrictions. In fact, many residents are not Catholic and are of many diverse backgrounds. 3. The staff at all levels are incredible. They are super qualified, helpful, and friendly at all times. I've never heard an unfriendly comment from anyone. 4. There are many different activities available and never any pressure to participate or not. Musical concerts of many kinds by outside professionals are a frequent and very pleasant activity. 5. Several different apartment floorplans are available. Mine fits me to a T! 6. Dinners are included in all plans and they provide a great opportunity to mingle with other residents and share some great stories and experiences. A great group of people. Please forgive the verbosity, but I want to convey what a great place this really is. If you're considering a retirement community, without a doubt, this is the place you want to be. I highly recommend it.

He was very nice and patient. I was able to explain her situation & he seemed empathetic. He worked out a deal with me, which I didn't know involved her having a roommate. Although I was concerned about that, I still entertained him and was ready to move forward with the process. It wasn't until I started completing the paperwork that I got turned off. They require that YOU be the guarantor and put YOUR CREDIT on the line for your family member. Even if you're the POA, YOU have to give them your SSN & assume full responsibility. Umm, NO SIR!! I have never had to do that as POA anywhere else. She is responsible for her own debt. I just pay it. I'm not allowing them to put an unnecessary inquiry on my credit. So, I immediately left and went to a different facility that I was looking at for her and signed the lease there. It's bad enough that this facility is outrageous in cost, but to also handle business like this is just too much. On top of that, the room that wanted to offer wreaked of urine and the roommate's family had control of the SHARED closet. I don't want her sharing a closet. Period. And the bathroom was on the roommate's side of the room & it clearly isn't cleaned much due to the strong Stench in the room that fills the room from the hvac system that also blew from that side of the room. It wasn't a good fit for us, but I did enjoy speaking to Reuben.

I must have visited this facility at least 3 times a week for a decade! I live nearby so it was convenient to walk there with my kids and visit my dad and the other elderly residents. We got to know many of the folks there, all the nurses and nuns as well. The front desk receptionist was always courteous and welcoming, the foyer is spacious and simply decorated. This place always felt more like an apartment building than a "nursing home." It was always fresh, bright, and clean. The floors were always so shiny and immaculate. We checked in and took the elevator to my dad's room. The living spaces there were always neat and organized, with laundry services provided. Residents can make their rooms as personalized as they'd like. We saw some lovely, well-appointed living rooms and bedrooms. The common areas are pristine and comfortable. We enjoyed seeing the other seniors there and took pleasure reading to them, helping with meals in the communal dining room, and even conducting Bible studies! The kitchenette has a couple tables, snacks and drinks for the residents. There's also a well stocked library and games. The nuns of the Little Sisters that run the facility provide spiritual support and many activities to keep the folks there encouraged and entertained when appropriate. They also have yard sales and festivals throughout the year. The nursing care was amazing and we felt confident in the safety and healthcare my father received. He was cared for in a dignified and gentle manner as he went through the stages of needed care. The staff made his adjustments for further medical assistance seamlessly. They certainly made a difficult situation much more easy to handle. Our minds were set at ease knowing my dad was being treated with compassion and love. Beautiful grounds surround the buildings, where residents can talks walks, pause for prayer and meditation and just enjoy being outside with nature. I'm so thankful for the extraordinary care my dad was given by the incredible people here. We couldn't have chosen a better home for him.
