As an out of town family member of a long term resident (15 yr.) I can no longer recommend Lakewood…read moredue to what I have observed this past year. At the time my parents made the decision and sizeable investment required to enter independent living (Villas) assurances were made LW provided a full continuum of care available to residents and implied staff would periodically assess any changes in resident medical status, including cognitive, to transition to differing levels of care, including assisted living. Our mother has long experienced and is treated for various underlying medical conditions which are now more complex due to additional factors including inconsistent cognition, seriously deteriorating vision and balance issues. Several months ago she fell at night in her unit and failed to activate either of the 2 emergency call devices provided, further evidence of cognition, balance and vision issues. She spent the night on the floor however LW became involved the following morning. After a hospital stay and followup stay in LW Healthcare Unit, rather than transitioning her to assisted living (where she could receive closer supervision including administration of the numerous daily medications she receives during the day) she was instructed to hire private duty nurses and to return to independent living. She has since fallen again. It appears LW is financially motivated to shift nursing care expenses to residents rather than properly transitioning medically compromised long term residents to assisted living or other advanced care options outlined at the time my parents became residents. The question becomes, is LW incapable of properly assessing the ongoing health status of long term residents? Or do they prefer to shift the increased cost of nursing care to the individual residents rather than transitioning them to assisted living? I could provide additional examples of reductions in service to residents over the years in spite of ever increasing fees. One such was the drastic reduction of on property shuttles which are critical to residents who no longer can drive yet are allowed to live in remote buildings and rely on shuttles to participate in on property meals, exercise and recreational activities. After much outcry from affected residents, it seems shuttle services have since been restored. That reduction in service should have never occurred, feels like it was financially motivated. My advice is to think long and hard and ask a lot of questions as you evaluate such a major decision and significant investment for your loved one..

I must have visited this facility at least 3 times a week for a decade! I live nearby so it was convenient to walk there with my kids and visit my dad and the other elderly residents. We got to know many of the folks there, all the nurses and nuns as well. The front desk receptionist was always courteous and welcoming, the foyer is spacious and simply decorated. This place always felt more like an apartment building than a "nursing home." It was always fresh, bright, and clean. The floors were always so shiny and immaculate. We checked in and took the elevator to my dad's room. The living spaces there were always neat and organized, with laundry services provided. Residents can make their rooms as personalized as they'd like. We saw some lovely, well-appointed living rooms and bedrooms. The common areas are pristine and comfortable. We enjoyed seeing the other seniors there and took pleasure reading to them, helping with meals in the communal dining room, and even conducting Bible studies! The kitchenette has a couple tables, snacks and drinks for the residents. There's also a well stocked library and games. The nuns of the Little Sisters that run the facility provide spiritual support and many activities to keep the folks there encouraged and entertained when appropriate. They also have yard sales and festivals throughout the year. The nursing care was amazing and we felt confident in the safety and healthcare my father received. He was cared for in a dignified and gentle manner as he went through the stages of needed care. The staff made his adjustments for further medical assistance seamlessly. They certainly made a difficult situation much more easy to handle. Our minds were set at ease knowing my dad was being treated with compassion and love. Beautiful grounds surround the buildings, where residents can talks walks, pause for prayer and meditation and just enjoy being outside with nature. I'm so thankful for the extraordinary care my dad was given by the incredible people here. We couldn't have chosen a better home for him.

The grounds were well maintained and manicured, the parking was ample and the entrance was welcoming. The foyer opened up to a large rotunda with a baby grand piano and lots of cozy sofas and chairs. Initially, there was no one at the front desk to greet us so we meandered around looking for assistance. A woman saw us and came over to help us find our friend. Off to the right was the big dining room and the residents were having supper. A lovely sea of silver headed seniors all looked our way to smile and say hello to us! We found our table and enjoyed a lovely conversation with our friend and she introduced us to two more sweet elderly ladies with whom she shared meals. The tables were spacious and club chairs were cushioned and comfy. They commented how kind the staff was and that the food was pretty good. Tonight they served hot dogs and fries, with pie and sherbet for dessert. We asked how they liked their living here, and they all agreed it was comfortable, clean and efficient. There are several floors, but they are all accessible from the main floor. The residents have cute little apartments/suites with their own kitchenette, bathroom, sleeping quarters and sitting room. Our friend showed us her place which was immaculate and well appointed with personal items. Some of the rooms have balconies where residents can have a small garden. She showed us the laundry room and the game room. This facility keeps their residents busy and active. Our friend said it was a little pricey to live here, but the quality of care is worth it! We look forward to visiting these dear ones again soon!!

In searching for an assisted living facility the task was difficult and stressful. I had my mind…read moreset on one place due to its location and reputation, but felt I owed it to my loved one to do my due diligence and visit all of the places close by. When I went to Southerland Place and toured the facility I knew this was the place. Their executive director, Sam Stoddard, took time to walk down the hall to say hello and make sure someone was helping me. Later as I talked with him, I could tell he was a man of integrity and cared about his residents. Then I met Courtney, their sales manager, she has a great personality and knew all of the residents by name. As I toured, I tried to watch how the staff interacted with the residents and was impressed with love they showed to each individual. We had lunch with the managing staff and really enjoyed the food and company. They even let the residents help with planning the menu as the chef came out during lunch to discuss options for the next week. Larry and Rena deal with the assessment and all nursing type stuff. They listened and treated my loved one with respect. Nancy, the business manager, has been a great help with getting the proper paperwork needed for long term care insurance. Her door is always open, if you have any questions. When we moved in Sam and Ronnie helped with the move. Ronnie is the manager of maintenance and is quick to help you with any request you may have. It has been 2 months since my loved one moved in and they love the place. The family has seen a big improvement in our loved one mental and physical state. The activities are great! They have had a Senior Prom, Bingo, Card games and other things to stimulate the minds of their residence. At lunch the staff came in and provided entertainment by hula hooping and even Sam got in there and gave it try. My loved one laughed and still gets a chuckle when thinking about it. One last thing that has impressed me is when I see Courtney she always ask how we are liking the place and if there is anything that the Southerland Place can do to make it a better place. I like this because it shows that they are always trying to improve the place. If you are in need of an assisted living facility I strongly recommend The Southerland Place.

I met Joe Gallagher with Oasis when my husband, Gregg, suffered a seizure related to his malignant…read morebrain tumor and was to be released from the hospital because there was nothing more they could do for his care. I had no idea where to go. Joe helped me review options around the Richmond, VA area for nursing care/rehab sites with physical, occupational and speech therapy. Gregg was able to receive excellent rehab for 3 weeks before we again were denied continued nursing care and had to move to our final option, assisted living. Joe joined me during the interview process at multiple facilities in the area to seek a good fit for Gregg regarding both nursing care and rehab care. Although Gregg had made strides in his rehab, his level of nursing care was deemed too involved for two of the more "prestigious" assisted living facilities in the area. I was very discouraged by this setback, but Joe and his wife, Judy, were exceptional in their emotional and spiritual support and kept me moving forward. Our third search was fruitful and Gregg received the best care I could have imagined for the next 10 months of his life. Through all of this journey, the Gallaghers kept in touch with us--they were never more than a phone call, text or email away and Joe visited Gregg at his new residence several times a month and even more during his last few weeks. Joe and Gregg shared a bond of faith, tears and hope that lifted both of them. Although Gregg was at peace with the treatments and outcomes he faced, he was even more so after spending time with Joe. Through our relationship with the Gallaghers, Gregg was able to receive therapy and hospice care at the assisted living facility. Joe's knowledge of Gregg as a person helped us find all the best support we needed. Even after his passing, the Gallaghers have kept touch with me and our two sons. Our family has been blessed to have had the Gallaghers by Gregg's side through his disease. We have met two new friends and grateful for their outreach even after Gregg's death.
