We take at least one, often two, vacations to the island each year and will continue to use CRV to book our stay. The two houses we vacationed in to date were fantastic. Exactly as described. My spouse has rented from them for even longer, so we were particularly surprised by the lack of basic courtesy and customer service. During our stay, the HVAC system was non-operational to the point that we ended our vacation one night early. We informed the company of the issue twice, on different days, but no one was ever sent to inspect or address it. Instead, we received text messages from someone identified as the 24/7 response specialist who clearly did not have the knowledge or expertise to troubleshoot an HVAC problem. The company never offered a meaningful solution, compensation, or any attempt to make things right. After many years of renting through them, the lack of a genuine response was especially disappointing. We will now be looking for another vacation rental company--one that follows basic courteous business practices and takes guest concerns seriously. **Of note this company changed its name some time ago to Coastal Shores Vacations and they are affiliated with Long and Foster**

After our experience with Cattail Cottage and Harbour Rental's staff and management, we will never be booking them again. Arriving at Cattail Cottage this year, everything seemed to be okay except that the only actual couch in the house in the back room is stained. We did not mind this much because we were not visiting Chincoteague to sit on the couch. One day, after getting back from dinner and hanging out in town, we arrived back to see that the house had become infested with hundreds of ants. Most of the ants were located in the bathroom right off of the bedroom, which unfortunately has a type of barn door on a slide which does not reach the floor to close off the bathroom to separate this issue from where we would be sleeping. We reported the infestation to Harbour Rentals that night and followed up again in the morning and repeatedly throughout our week in Chincoteague after sleeping elsewhere beginning that night. The office only gave us six Terro ant bait traps for hundreds of ants. After spending most of the next day playing exterminator and cleaning the house on vacation, the ants seemed to subside for that day, however, they returned and were now also in the kitchen, especially by the sink, even though we did not use the kitchen other than storing things in the fridge. We repeatedly reached out to Harbour Rentals requesting a call from the manager, named Anita according to office staff Bill and Sandy, throughout the remainder of our stay and never heard from her. Upon dropping off our keys on the last day, Sandy was in office and stated that Anita had visited the house without telling us and while we were not there. Sandy stated that Anita did not find any evidence of ants in the home, however, prior to us dropping off the keys, we did our own walk through of the cottage and found even more ants, both dead and alive, all around the home and took a video which showcases this. We still have not heard from or seen the manager, Anita, after having repeatedly requesting a call, sending an email, and visiting the office in person multiple times.

We stayed with 3 other retired  couples this time and enjoyed having our own bedrooms and bathrooms. Really enjoyed seeing the Chincoteague wild ponies again, and this time we did get to the Wallops NASA base.   We are planning on bringing our grandchildren for a week next summer. There are so many free activities that we can enjoy with them from catching crabs and swimming off the dock,  surf fishing on Assateague, and even climbing the light house.  Plus the 2 visitor centers on Assateague and Wallops can keep them busy if weather doesn't let us enjoy the National Seashore which is my favorite beach. Our communications with Sherry and staff before arrival were responsive and helpful. The home is simply stunning on the inside and perfect for 2 couples. What put a negative ending on our lovely stay was the attitude of Island Getaways toward personal items left behind. "Throw it away" is their attitude and policy. It is evidently too much hassle for a customer service vacation rental company to facilitate the return of accidentally forgotten belongings to renters - AFTER they have vacated the property. I can't help they cynicism in my thoughts... they have our money, we've left the property spotless, except for our forgotten personal items, and they cannot find the time or generosity to make a phone call to discuss a return using the credit card information they already have. I told them I would pay extra for the box, padding and their time arranging it. My items included about 6 personal 4-8 oz jars of nuts & seeds (collectible glass canning jars) NOT fresh store bought food, and an unopened 32 oz cannister of high quality protein powder. I don't know anyone personally who would intentionally leave personal items behind. I believe that's why it's termed "accidental." I believe people are capable of knowing the difference between store bought fresh food and personal collectible jars filled with pantry items. I believe people realize an unopened cannister of protein powder is fairly expensive. I believe most people are good and kind and generous when given an opportunity to be helpful to others. It turns out even in the off season - when Island Getaways office staff is obviously not as busy as during peak season - it is way too much hassle to carry customer service to the customer AFTER they are no longer on site.

"We were disappointed with the overall cleanliness of the house. A few concerns while settling in: -There are ants all over the kitchen area. -There is also no trash can in the small bathroom downstairs. - barely any hand soap in either bathroom. Thankfully we brought a large bottle of hand soap with us and refilled one of the bottles that was really low. -I also don't see any extra paper towels or kitchen towels or hand towels anywhere in the house. " Their response: "Thank you for taking time to reach out to us about your stay. Despite all of our houses being on a pest control plan, the ants are always a troublesome part of the Chincoteague experience. We recommend that you put all of your food away and do not leave it sitting out. They will be very noticeable otherwise. There is nothing we can really do about the ants. We do keep ant traps here at the office. Please let us know if you would like to stop in and get some. The hand soap is not something we provide with our rentals. If there are soap bottles, they were let from previous guests. We also only provide a starter roll of paper towels and a starter roll of toilet paper in each bathroom. Anything beyond that guests would need to bring. If you need any hand towels just let us know. We can put some out for you." The back deck was a mess and unusable. We ended up buying powder to kill the ants and zip lock bags to keep all our food, hand towels and toilet paper, and even with that the ants were EVERYWHERE. When we checked out we got a call asking what the powder was all over the kitchen and I told them, it was ant deterrent and they did not press the issue. I even left the container under the sink since they clearly needed it. I don't know about everyone else but if you pay over $1k to stay in a vacation home for 1 week, you shouldn't be expected to bring toilet paper, paper towels, zip loc bags to keep ants out, hand towels, hand soap, etc. We have rented through Airbnb before in Pennsylvania and did not have to bring any of those items. We have stayed in the area several times at the Best Western and it's always been a pleasurable experience, but I am finding that renting a home is an entirely different thing in that area. It looks like we won't be going back to Chincoteague this year, as most of the homes are not rented by individuals and all the companies I have looked at have poor reviews. So if you want to go, plan really early to find the best places to stay!

Minor Cons that would only make this place even better: the check in needs work, we got a text saying the room was ready and mobile key so when we arrived we went right to the room wit the mobile key. That should be mentioned in the check in text instead of to head right to your room. Major con for my husband and he would have given if three stars for how annoyed he was by the TVs-None of the TVs work - the remotes are absurd and channels don't correlate to the guide that pops up, and the tv has only basic cable and a few channels- all the streaming apps are present but blocked somehow. Theyre exceptionally hard to navigate. For a bungalow at the beach, sometimes you want to watch tv. Also wish terribly that they had a hot tub, seems like a big miss for such a great resort! Lastly, the set up at least of our cottage was weird, the TV and couch were against the windows so you were looking at a wall, not the nice sunset and bay which was behind you. Overall, very clean, immaculate grounds, and incredible resort a-z.
