I don't know why I didn't think to review Sylvia's before now - I'm in there all the time!…read more Let's start off with Sylvia. She is one of the nicest people you will meet. Ever. She's very knowledgeable about quilting and sewing in general. The staff there is great as well. They will spend as long as it takes to find the one perfect fabric you are missing from your project. I mean AS LONG as you need them to. The other day I had found 7 of 8 fabrics I needed for a project and just couldn't come up with that perfect last one. After 20 minutes or more we found it! I say we, like I had some hand in it. It was really the 2 other ladies that were scouring the store to please me. They ROCK! :) The store is well lit with room to move around. The fabrics are grouped by type (batik, flannel, cotton, Asian,) and then by color. They have a nice selection of rulers, cutters, threads, quilting patterns, fat quarters, do-dads, and general sewing-type notions. There are sample quilts & projects hanging EVERYWHERE to inspire you. Gift cards are available! In the back of the store there are large tables for classes. Samples of all the class projects are hanging to you can get an up-close look at what you're going to make. Stop by Sylvia's, you'll love it. Even if you're only going in to pet the fabric. :)

I went in to grab a gift for my wife, fully expecting to point at something and hope for the best. Instead, Ms. Kay took the time to walk me through different types of yarn, what they're used for, and even the kinds of projects they go into. She didn't just sell me yarn, she educated me... patiently. The shop itself is a great setup. Tons of options, great quality, and you can tell everything in there has a purpose. It's one of those places where people who know what they're doing can really get after it, and people like me don't feel completely lost. Bottom line, Ms. Kay is just a genuinely good human being. Friendly, knowledgeable, and runs a solid business. Highly recommend for anyone into crafts... or for husbands trying not to mess up a gift. #SupportLocal #SmallBusiness #Alaska #CraftLife #ShopLocal #MayorJacobs

If you're looking for cheap yarn, look elsewhere. They have premium quality stuff pretty much exclusively. I really enjoy the quirky stock they have. By all means, they're beautiful, unique and made a lovely hat and fingerless gloves, but dang! I sure hope my son's girlfriend loves them! :D The nice lady working in there was very kind, available if needed and just allowed me to browse at my own pace. It's quite nice that they offer to roll the hank of yarn into a ball for you as well, which only takes a minute or two each. Just as the pandemic was hitting in the spring, they were getting ready to have classes for spinning yarn and unfortunately that has been postponed until all this ridiculousness is over. I'll probably go to a class or two, since I do have a wheel of my own. I merely dock a star for the price... by all means I will keep shopping there when I'm in need of fabulous yarn, but it's not for the random piece or practice project for sure. If you're looking for a specialty yarn for yourself or a gift, I highly recommend The Tangled Skein!

For sale are ulus, carvings, jewelry, furs, and other examples of Native crafts. Each vendor identifies where he or she is from, which is a nice touch. Its essentially an annual craft fair that is part of the Fur Rondy in late February/March. If you're planning to visit Alaska for the first time and you are looking for something uniquely Alaskan, plan your trip to coincide with the Fur Rondy so you don't miss out on this once a year event. And bring lots and lots of cash! (Some vendors do accept credit cards, but not many.) Every year I could kick myself for not squirreling away more money so I could buy something really amazing. This year I missed out on a one-of-a-kind spotted seal and polar bear purse that made me want to weep. For $550 it makes Coach look like a wet paper bag. I also spied a one of a kind pair of spotted seal boots, also in the 500 dollar range, with a pile so deep and soft that I'm sure I would have had a footgasm every time I put them on if I could have afforded them. My sweetie was drooling over Aleut fisherman carvings of unparalleled craftsmanship. We also saw paintings and bronze statues that also made us regret not having put money aside this year. We did spring for some handmade beaded jewlery that incorporated Alaskan abalone, and porcupine quills and claws. I'm proud to wear jewlery that helps support our native crafts people and ensures that all parts of animals that are hunted are both consumed and perserved as art. Native peoples waste nothing of the animal and make some really amazing practical items as well as wearable art. I really enjoy the craft fair because you meet peoples from all over Alaska. The craft fair is also something of a social gathering. Many of the elders love to tell you their stories while you shop, so plan to stay a while and enjoy hearing stories you aren't likely to forget. Items you're likely to find at the craft fair and price ranges: beaded jewlery- $10-$500 fur items and pelts- $100 to the thousands... walrus ivory carvings and jewlery- $50 to the thousands... paintings and prints- $25- $1000 crocheted items- $10-$100 silver, gold, bronze, copper jewlery- $50-$600 winter & summer parky's- $500-$1000 hair adornments (beaded, shells, fur, etc)- $10-$300 handmade soaps/lotions- $3-$30 and much more....! Also, some of the days of the Craft Fair they also have Native Dancing demonstrations with various Native Alaskan nations represented. Check the annual Fur Rondy schedule for more details.
