Just as the pandemic was hitting in the spring, they were getting ready to have classes for spinning yarn and unfortunately that has been postponed until all this ridiculousness is over. I'll probably go to a class or two, since I do have a wheel of my own. I merely dock a star for the price... by all means I will keep shopping there when I'm in need of fabulous yarn, but it's not for the random piece or practice project for sure. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly and instantly felt welcome. The shop is absolutely charming -- there's so much to see that my eyes were having a feast! I ended up buying the cutest hand-beaded medicine pouch made of seal skin and an adorable pair of socks. Honestly, if I had more time, I could have spent hours exploring everything. It smells incredibly inviting and sweet I tried to put my nose on which scent I was picking up in hopes it was one priced for sale somewhere. The style inside is ever changing, and expertly fixed with care and an eye for arrangement. I will say, this store is by no means cheap. Much of what's inside is made locally in Alaska by artisans and artists, though there are some cute items that upon careful inspection are made in Indonesia so it feels bleh to buy marked up with artisan prices. As someone born and raised in this city I would never support this business. You can find local crafts by Alaskan artists nearly EVERYWHERE downtown - the 5th ave mall, Kobuk Coffee, or for Fur Rondy specifics the Fur Rondy store has all the same pins and better selection. Sans the lack of ethics behind this business, I would not shop here due to the lack of value and mark up of local items you can find at other places for less. To support Alaskan artists during Fur Rondy, check out the craft bizarre and market at Dimond Center that starts during the last week in Feb. Support local businesses that actually support local artists and their communities equitably (aka do NOT shop at Sara's!)
