My wife always drags me here. In decades, I've never shopped her of my own free will. But it's a great place for crafts, arts, decorations, painting, and such. I enjoy the holiday displays especially. They have a wide selection of holiday decorations and crafts and items. All very interesting and stuff not found anywhere else in Anchorage.

Michael's in Anchorage is the typical, obligatory craft store. The store is usually clean and the customer service is fair. I have noticed some of the associates could use some training in customer service skills. My biggest criticism with this store is their stock and availability, it is lacking in several areas. I realize that being in Alaska poses some issues with availability but it seems worse at Michaels than many of the other stores in town. They also tend to not order much of the seasonal items so it goes really fast when they do get items in. I'd think with little to no competition from other craft stores they'd be able to know the audience and keep a well stocked store but it seems the opposite effect, likely not ordering as much stock for fear of having it left over and storing or going to clearance. Not a horrible store to visit but also no other viable options to shop for crafts and the like.

Their mission is simple - to support and promote Native Alaskan artists by providing them a place to work and sell their art while also promoting their culture and each other. They nurture art and they lift each other up. In a world of AI slop and mass produced junk the Alaska Art Alliance provides a much needed infusion of craftsmanship practiced for generations. A fine layer of dust seems to cling to everything in the store, but it is not the dust of neglect; it is the dust of constant hard work. They have a wide variety of items - art, pins, jewelry, carvings, and scrimshaws and much more! I will admit I wasn't certain when I first passed the shop as the retractable gate and the locked door made it look uninviting. My friend tried the door, found it locked, and walked away leaving me barely time to read the sign that said "if locked call or text number listed" as they would be in the back working. The next day we returned, and after informing my friend what the sign said, prepared to call but found the door unlocked. There were multiple cases full of different items. The workshop in the back looked busy. After being in so manny tourist shops it just felt nice being somewhere that felt real. The gentleman who assisted us was warm and informative. He told us about the artisans, the mission, and all they were doing. My eyes fell upon a jade bead necklace and I was captivated. I had been looking at jade all trip fairly unimpressed because they largely were flat green and didn't interest me. This necklace had character with inclusions and variations in the color. Each bead was unique. There were two necklaces and I opted for the smaller since being short the larger was a bit long to wear practically. The larger, tho, was epically beautiful as well! We ended up buying that necklace and a handcrafted pin. I am very pleased with our purchases and would recommend anyone who seeks authentic pieces to come to this Art Alliance.

I was happy to discover that "Macbeth" by Giuseppe Verdi was being performed. The sets were modest, yet effective. The talent and chorus seemed as though it needed to be warmed up, like auto starts in cold weather to get things all nice and toasty. During the second half of the performance, voices were bolder, more full and confident. Most rewarding was soprano Brenda Harris playing Lady Macbeth. She literally stole the show with her consistent strength and conviction. She outshined all talent on that stage. The weakest talent, I thought, was the female chorus members playing the witches ("Double, double toil and trouble"). No amount of jazz hands or spooky arm movements could save their weak resolve. Overall a rewarding performance that defiantly made me appreciate the importance and influence that the performing arts provide a community. Long live Anchorage Opera and may it survive another 50 years of artistic expression.

I went in to grab a gift for my wife, fully expecting to point at something and hope for the best. Instead, Ms. Kay took the time to walk me through different types of yarn, what they're used for, and even the kinds of projects they go into. She didn't just sell me yarn, she educated me... patiently. The shop itself is a great setup. Tons of options, great quality, and you can tell everything in there has a purpose. It's one of those places where people who know what they're doing can really get after it, and people like me don't feel completely lost. Bottom line, Ms. Kay is just a genuinely good human being. Friendly, knowledgeable, and runs a solid business. Highly recommend for anyone into crafts... or for husbands trying not to mess up a gift. #SupportLocal #SmallBusiness #Alaska #CraftLife #ShopLocal #MayorJacobs

It's quite nice that they offer to roll the hank of yarn into a ball for you as well, which only takes a minute or two each. Just as the pandemic was hitting in the spring, they were getting ready to have classes for spinning yarn and unfortunately that has been postponed until all this ridiculousness is over. I'll probably go to a class or two, since I do have a wheel of my own. If you're looking for a specialty yarn for yourself or a gift, I highly recommend The Tangled Skein!
