I consider myself a crafty mom. A lover of hobbies and home decor. And Michael's is what fuels me and my frequently acquired interests. I came in sequins. I left with art I couldn't leave without, stickers for my daughter, glue sticks and of course sequins. I had TWO coupons and they stacked so I felt like I really got my moneys worth. I also love a good sale which they always have so that was nice, though I think that's how they're designed to sell. The store was organized, newly arranged just slightly and full of lovely arrivals. I don't really celebrate holidays but if I did this a where id be buying decorations from. The cashier at the front was nice, and patient with me. My only caution is that there are so many people who drive too fast in the parking lot and don't pay enough attention. So I'll be back. Plus they have fabrics. read more

Michaels in South Anchorage is my go to spot whenever I want to start a new hobby. Whether I need holiday specific decor or craft supplies from yarn to paint, they have it! I have not really interacted with any staff at this store, but being introverted I like it like this. Checkout is nice and quick since it is a self service kiosk. I love how I am able to rack up points and get coupons quickly. My only critique would be that I wish the store was bigger, but they are still the best priced craft store in town. read more

I can't help it, I love Michael's. Their craft prices can't be beat. Every year I try to buy my seasonal items other places, but frankly I just can't afford to. Michael's is cheaper by a landslide and has a much better variety than any other place in Alaska. I inevitably buy things I don't use, but even so I still save money. read more

Came here for a few photo frames. They seem to have the monopoly for a wide range of frames and colors. easy check out. I ended up spending enough money that I was emailed a $15 rewards gift card the next day. So naturally I went back and got some Halloween decor :) Always check the website for coupons before shopping. You can do this while in the check out line. They almost always have a 20% off coupon. I come here a lot because of my crafting girl! So we get lots of paint, canvases, glitter, brushes and various paper and backgrounds here. It's a Scrapbooker's Paradise! Me, I come for decorations and the picture frames, especially floating frames! I've also used their custom framing department for gifts to friends. I have bought Halloween decorations and Christmas items when I'm tagging along with our daughter. Leila has the app so she gets huge discounts when she checks out. This place is our daughter's favorite craft store. We've bought Xmas items, had framing done of pictures, small picture frames, Richard, he loves floating frames and always checks them out, but today was art supplies. Now that we're in the new house she can spead out and let her creative juices flow she picked up paint and canvasas. It's a crafting sleepover for a friend of hers. NEED SUPPLIES MOM! This place has a lot of stuff. We went in looking for paintings for a large wall in our house. They didn't have any of those. They did have lots of craft materials. I feel like if I was decorating anything BUT large walls in a house, they'd have what I needed. They did have huge poster frames and some decent sized picture frames (plus a whole section for custom framing of paintings). They have a small model car section with model paints and otherwise. It seemed smaller than other hobby style craft stores I've been in, but maybe that's just me. Service was non existent. No one asked if we needed help. The store was tidy and clean. read more

We don't have too many options when it comes to craft supplies in AK, but Michaels tends to be the go-to place for most. They're missing fabric, however I think there are enough locally owned quilting shops, that we have options! I like that they not only have craft supplies but some home decor items as well. They're a much smaller version of some well known stores in the lower 48 that I use to frequent when I spent a few years in Texas. The customer service and friendliness is a bit lacking and their checkout line can be a bit annoying. They have a single line leading up to the cashiers, however your 20+ feet away, even when you're at the front of the line. I don't know, it's just kind of weird, but moves semi-swiftly. We have utilized their framing services a few times and generally pleased. We did take them an already matted and framed piece that had my husbands military medals in it after deciding we wanted the matting to be a different color... after taking it home and hanging it back up, we noticed they didn't line the medals correctly and we had to take it back to be redone. I do like that they keep your framing projects in their computer, so when we want to match frames hanging in our home, it's easy to reference and see how others will look together. I'll continue to shop at both locations, however when traveling out of state, I like to visit stores we don't have up here. read more

They definitely have lots of crafting items if you're looking to make something you saw on Pinterest. Just didn't seem to have what I was looking for the last two times I came in. I get it- I was looking for something very specific: burlap ribbon with lace running through the middle. They had two options. I'm pretty sure I saw more at Walmart. Also 32oz mason jars (specifically tinted green- yes I know they're some sort of special edition)... they had clear ones but were much more expensive than Target. Lots to look at in every isle... if you're an actual artist (not the casual crafter like me) maybe this place would suit you better. I wish the checkout was more smooth. Always reconsidering if I even need what I came in for while waiting so long in line. Be careful of the goodies in the checkout area, you might spend more on those treats than on what you came in for. read more

My mother was the artsy craftsy person in our family. Yet, I'm not so sure she would have liked shopping here all that much. I say this only because the store looked to be about 2/3rds empty. But because this store is more spacious than the other store in Mountain View, it may have just seemed that way. I did not get the "Wow! Let's go shopping!" vibe at all. I just wanted to get in and get out. With the exception of Zoe who held guard on the front end check-out area, the rest of the employees I had encounters with were glum, to say the least. I had checked online for 6 to 8 hour long burning tealights, and found what I was looking for at Michael's, yet only at this store on Old Seward near Dimond, which is clear across town for me. And of course they were not very reasonably priced. They better be worth it. The candles that I had been buying for years at Fred's on Muldoon have completely changed and are now pitiful, with a price increase to boot. Zoe told me her name means "life" in Greek. She was very nice, and fun to talk to. Too bad she couldn't have breathed some of that life into this place, including the zombie-like employees who were lumbering around. I was at self check out and I was looking for a bag before I started scanning my items. I had found one, and decided to use it. As I was finishing up scanning my items, an older lady (definitely a Karen) had so rudely came up to me raising her voice and would not let us use the paper bag. She literally made me take out everything I had just loaded into the bag. She told me I needed to purchase a reusable bag. The store had everything I needed, but the customer service needs some help. I could not tell if it was racism or if she just simply hates her job. read more

Michaels is my go to store for art supplies . We have limited options in Anchorage and Michaels does a good job of having almost everything anyone at any level of skill might need . They carry golden acrylic paints which in my opinion is the best . They carry Windsor Newton oil paints , not my favorite but certainly adequate . The other huge thing makes Michaels irreplaceable is they have what you need for weddings, birthdays showers .... any big or small celebration . Michaels will have what you need . I know that's hard to believe but it's true . Michaels has a great app . You will have any coupon they offer at your fingertips . A 40% off coupon is almost always available . read more

Went to get custom frames on a couple pencil drawings. The clerk was worried because one of them had a ragged edge and needed to be trimmed. "We can't cut them ourselves" Fine, I said, hand me some scissors so I can do it "I need to call the manager." She calls the manager. "No I can't" Seriously? This is Alaska?! Wow, talk about taking dumb to a whole new level. So unhelpful. read more

I like coming here when there are sales for specific items like picture frames, which when combined with a coupon is fairly discounted. Recently, I stopped in for knitting needles and had to return them because I didn't like the slight friction the needles had from manufacturing. I guess I'm used to the cheap ole boye needles from Fred's, although it's made of the same type of metal and manufactured from the same country. Really great yarn selection. This store contains every hobby that I can think of, from scrapbooking to sculpting. Would come again, but not for knitting needles. read more

This store closes their bathrooms an hour early every evening. This has been a major inconvenience during my shopping several times, no more last minute runs for craft supplies. Online shopping experience would be better. Everything is marked up super high so that you have to use a coupon for it to be reasonably priced. read more

Whenever I go here I always get stuck in the scrapbooking section and end up leaving spending more than I came in for :-) Like this visit, I went in for some cookie cutters for my wax and I ended up leaving with tons of pretty boxes cause they were 40% off! I still got the spring/easter cookie cutters though. There is a huge selection here, especially for kids. read more

Poor customer service from the managers. Had very little to no help around the floors, then we requesting a restroom for my child in potty training I was turned away being told they were being cleaned and when I explained the urgency she simply threw her hands up. I was already waiting in line to make my purchase and she made no attempt to check the restrooms or offer an alternative. Also sadly she was training an associate and giving a very poor example of customer service. Given there aren't many craft stores in this town it's a shame they treat there customers so nonchalantly. read more

Lacking in customer service. Called to see if they had 6 different artificial flowers in stock and was told by the person on the phone "ya know, I can try to check but we are a very busy store and I'm not sure we will have time." I told her I could give her the sku numbers and she could get back to me later in the day. She was still hesitant to help me. I finally said that if it was that big of an inconvenience I could send someone down to the store to check, she responded with "yeah, we just are a very busy store and have customers in the store we need to help." Am I not a customer? Wow. Really tried to make this request simple for you. Taking my business elsewhere. Sales on art supplies are the main reason I shop here. Michaels is one of those stores that has sales and online coupons every week (kind of like another popular craft store chain that shall remain un-named here). Avoid buying anything full price here unless you're having some bizarre craft emergency -- I'm sure it could happen, but so far I guess I've been lucky to dodge that bullet. They have a decent selection of canvases, although I don't find them to be as high of quality as the ones sold at art specialty stores. They also carry Golden Acrylics, Liquitex and their own store brand of paints and mediums. Easel selection is minimal, but they have a good basic selection of brushes. Of course there are tons of other craft accoutrements too: yarn & fiber art supplies, floral supplies & ribbon, frames & pre-cut mats, kids craft kits & models, wooden cut-outs, cake decorating supplies, scrapbooking, holiday decor and craft items, mass-produced home decor items that look like they were hand crafted using the materials from the store, and pretty much anything else you could think of for your newest Pinterest inspiration. They also offer art & craft classes in case wandering the aisles doesn't inspire you by itself. read more

I took a print with a frame that needed a piece of glass to be put together to Michael's on Saturday March 9 in early afternoon. When I finally got to the counter after waiting for two others to finish their orders one woman rudely announced loudly that pretty much everyone could hear: "we don't repair frames." To which I answered: it doesn't need repair. I just need a piece of glass and it put together." The nice young lady who was waiting on me started looking at the frame and making like she was going to help me. She indicated that yes it was in good shape. Another very rude woman came out of the back and said again very loudly "we don't repair frames." I thought to myself, I wonder what I did. I again reiterated that it didn't need repair, just put together. The rude lady, who wouldn't look at me but clearly was in charge said "you can go somewhere else." I was shocked. But the nice young lady waiting on me just looked at me. I asked if I could just order a piece of glass. While taking measurements she quietly told me that all the work at Micheal's is shipped out. Gee, I wonder why that rude women couldn't have just said that they don't actually put together frames there that they just ship everything out? Anyway, the nice young lady did a measurement and told me the plain piece of glass would be $60. Seemed kinda high to me. There were signs all over the place stating that framing was 60% off regular price and then another 35% off. So I asked if I could get price off. To which one of the rude ladies again loudly said that doesn't apply since I'm not doing custom framing. Hum. Now I also had a coupon that stated anything in the store 40% off regular price. I asked about that, and the lady said that didn't apply since I was in the custom framing department. But by that time I had had enough. As a paying customer who has been to Michael's several times I don't deserve to be treated that way. I don't know if the one woman was very grumpy, had a bad day, or what. But I took my print, frame and left. I'll not be going there again anytime soon as they don't want my business. :-( read more

Super disappointed in the customer service. Not a single employee even looks up to acknowledge you. Also, if the have posted hours just ignore them since the manager locks the doors anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes before the store is supposed to close. read more

Love this store. When I'm on vacation,this store is definitely on my list to visit. Lots of parking and great deals. I love the sales and I never leave empty handed. I wish they had a fabric section. They only have a few fabrics. I feel like that is the one thing all their stores are missing. read more

i miss this place. the people were really nice and the prices were decent. i would always overspend. the michaels stores in the state i live now are too small and the people are so rude and unhelpful. i wanna move back to alaska just for the people. read more
