When 3,000 pounds = 8,000 pounds We're writing this to educate people who need to hire a mover. We wish we knew then -- before we hired Seaford Transfer of York County, Va., to move us from Newport News, Va., to Savannah, Ga. -- what we know now. As we get started, it's important to know that we decided to sell or give away the vast majority of our furniture before we moved to Savannah. Here's what we took: five chairs, a large dresser, a king-size bed and mattress and box spring, a large coffee table, an end table, a hall table, an outdoor bench, a hope chest, about 25 medium-size boxes, a kayak, a storage trunk, a large piece of artwork, an antique sewing machine, a bicycle, several rugs, a ladder and two outdoor sculptures. If we're leaving anything out, it was inconsequential. A Seaford Transfer employee, Brittany Ellis, came to our house to estimate the weight of our things, and I pointed out what we were taking to Savannah. She estimated the weight of our things at 8,000 pounds. We were ignorant of the process, so we assumed that estimate was accurate. Between the time when we received that estimate and the day when our things were actually moved, two other Seaford Transfer employees who saw our things told us they weighed about 3,000 pounds. We made a mental note of that, but we didn't ask about the discrepancy for two reasons: 1) Our house sold in three days, and we had to vacate it quickly, and we were stuck with Seaford Transfer; and 2) We assumed the company would do the right thing -- recognize the massive discrepancy and issue a reasonable refund. The other thing we didn't do before our move date was determine about what our belongings weighed. After the move, we learned from multiple websites that moving companies sometimes estimate 1,000 pounds per room, and sometimes they estimate between 10,000 and 12,000 pounds for a four-bedroom house. We had a four-bedroom house with 10 rooms, not including bathrooms, but we were taking the equivalent of only two rooms of furniture (one partial bedroom set and five chairs) and a lot of boxes. That explains why the two other Seaford Transfer employees came up with 3,000 pounds. After the move, we called Reggie Moore, the son of the owners, and explained the situation. He said he would review the paperwork, talk with the employees and get back to me in about a week. He never did. A couple of weeks after we spoke, we called him four days in a row. He never returned any of those calls, so we emailed his mother, Kathy Moore, the president and owner of Seaford Transfer, who replied that she would talk with Ms. Ellis and get back to us. After doing so, her reply -- and I'm paraphrasing was this: After you signed the estimate, it became binding, and it really didn't matter if we moved more or less than what we estimated. She added -- and I'm quoting: "We have been in business since 1986, and I can assure you that we have NEVER overestimated a move to pad our pockets." It's one thing to say that, but how do you explain the discrepancy between what Ms. Ellis estimated and what the other Seaford Employees employees and multiple websites said? Reggie Moore didn't want to do that, and neither did Kathy Moore. We made our share of mistakes, and now we feel an obligation to share with others the lessons we learned: 1) Give yourself enough time before you have to vacate your house to get three estimates. 2) Do some research and know beforehand approximately how many pounds of stuff you need moved. 3) Never assume a company is going to admit a mistake and do the right thing, especially after they have your check. My elderly mother hired Seaford Transfer based on positive experiences with this company by her acquaintances. The communication prior to delivery was excellent. Day of move they arrived right on time. My mother went up the stairs to show them what needed to be placed in truck and she fell and could not get up. They sat on the floor with her and kept her calm. They carried her dow would not leave her side until the ambulance came. They stayed in contact with me the entire time and finished the delivery to her new home. They were not able to get everything they came for that day since she had an accident but came back out expediently to pick up the rest. Again they showed up right on time, immediately asked about my mothers condition and efficiently and carefully packed the remaining furnisher and delivered it in perfect condition. This is a difficult review to write. Seaford Transfer has been five stars for us in several other moves. However, not so this time. It was a couple days after they unpacked what they packed 5 weeks earlier, when my wife discovered four rings missing from her jewelry box. When I looked into my watch box there were five rings missing...all I owned. No one entered our home after the unpackers left. We made a full report to the York County Sheriff's Department and sent a letter to Seaford Transfer. The reply to my letter was surprisingly curt, with an attached claim form. I returned the claim form filled in with the cost amount from 50+ years ago, of $2000.00. Some time passed and I sent another letter requesting the status of my claim, but a month later I'm still waiting for a reply. Live and learn I always say. Update three months later. Turning in a claim to Seaford Transfer is a waste of time. I never received a reply to my letter, so obviously they never intended to provide an explanation for my loss, much less any reimbursement. So keep your fingers crossed that they don't loose or damage your possessions. read more

Let me tell you about this company. Worked with us on a small move of about 3 pieces. Granted one of them was an entire wall unit from Germany (Shrunk) that had to be taken apart and put back together. They sent 2 guys who assessed the situation and went right to work. That piece hasn't been taken apart and moved in 40+ years and the did an Amazing job. Great care in wrapping the pieces to make sure no damage could happen. Taking it apart was a learning curve. Putting back together took them no time at all. I truly want to thank them for their service. We have used them once before to move a piano and decided to use them again. They are now our go to local movers when ever we run into a job a little to much for a some guys on the weekend to handle. Thanks again for a job well done. read more

The office staff is friendly and responsive, Kathy is very efficient and knowledgeable during the survey and estimate process, and the packing and move crew is reliable and efficient. All of our items have always arrived in the same condition in which they left- no problems. My wife and I are both pastors in the United Methodist Church. We contacted Seaford Transfer because we knew the owners were active in their local United Methodist church. "Moving day" in the UMC is a well orchestrated event where the outgoing pastor moves out, and the incoming pastor moves in, all on the same day, throughout the whole state. It's a nightmare! For my wife and I, instead of moving from one parsonage to another, we were selling the house we owned, and buying another, in a different town. Seaford worked closely with us throughout the whole process. Our real estate agent worked on the 50% rule -- 50% of everything we owned had to be moved out of the house, so potential buyers could "see" their stuff in each room, not ours. Seaford worked with us and came out and moved half our stuff into their storage facility. Then when it came time to move, they sent two of their best "packers" who spent two days packing up everything that was left. Then their movers came and loaded everything we owned on to two trucks, where it sat for the five days between when we moved out of our old house into our new. Loading and packing the truck occurred on 90 degree plus days, but every single one of their employees was courteous, respectful, and kind. To us and to each other. The lead mover said "please" and "thank you"to each of his co-workers, hundreds of times! Same thing on move in day. Two trucks and a van came right on time, along with five movers, who worked well in to the evening. They were all delightful! Everything that had been taken apart at our last house got put back together before they left. We felt like we had been moved by dear friends.
