Calumet Fisheries is a true bucket list foodie spot. First off the services is always 100% amazing…read more The aroma of woodsmoke hits you the second you step out of your car. Located right next to the historic 95th Street Bridge, this little roadside shack serves up pure comfort food. While the smoked fish gets plenty of fame, their fried menu is just as amazing. The fried shrimp are huge, golden, perfectly crisp, and never greasy. Even unique options like the fried oysters and smelts are clean and beautifully prepared. Every order comes hot and fresh with fries and slaw. It's a beautifully raw, historic experience that has stayed perfect for decades. Free street parking available. 100% recommend!!

It was raining on the way there but that didn't stop us. Parking on the street is limited but they do have a lot that you can park in. The crowd was a steady flow of people. It's pretty small on the inside. It looks like a small fish monger/ butcher style type of place. Smokes fish on one side, fried seafood on the side. You order your fried food first then you can order the smoked fish. The young men were very nice and friendly. They move the crowd pretty quickly. We were there about 15 minutes tops!! We ordered a full order of fried shrimp, half order of fried smelts, 1 lb of pepper/ garlic smoked salmon & a half lb of smoked sturgeon. The fried shrimp were fresh and delicious. I've had better fried shrimp in the city but these were definitely delicious. Seasoned, Flavorful crunchy coating, sweet mild shrimp an easy 8.7/10. The fried smelts were also fresh tasting, flaky inside, seasoned crust on the outside. Fried perfectly!! We really enjoyed them. 9/10! I wish I had gotten tartar sauce for them instead of hot sauce. The Pepper/ garlic smoked salmon was also top tier! Served cold like revenge it was wasn't over smoked but the perfect amount of smoke. A slice of lemon would definitely take it up further! You traditionally eat it with saltine crackers (we brought our on. They charge $1.09 for a crackers) which makes it so much better. 9.4/10. Next time we'll bring a lemon which would make it a 10/10. The smoke sturgeon was fatty and mild. Nice and meaty with a slight sweetness almost the flavor of crab. A lemon slice would've been nice for this dish as well to help cut the richness of the fat & the smoke but it's still an easy 9.7/10. We enjoyed every bite of this meal! I spent $76 and some change for the meal. And told them to keep the $3 and change for their tip jar. Total $80 bucks well worth it! If you haven't been here make a trip on the southeast side of town and visit them. Calumet Fisheries is more closer to 4.8 stars Remember ALL reviews are SUBJECTIVE!

I swear everytime I've gone into a fish place recently they've all been out of catfish, but luckily…read morenot today! This black owned business has above average standing room in the waiting area, two TVs and an ATM with a good amount of seats/benches. Seems like it might've been an old chinese food joint with a few tables, but they opted for a pure takeout experience (which is unfortunately the trend nowadays.) Since it was my first time I thought I'd try both the fish and chicken combo along with the dirty rice. The total came out to be $24 with the wait being about 15 minutes. The staff overall were nice.      After leaving the place and checking the food. I realized that the combo dinner didn't contain a roll and coleslaw like advertised which was kind of disappointing. It did have the fries though. The requested lemon pepper was there, but they also seasoned the chicken/catfish with garlic powder, salt and parsley which is fine. Everything was fried hard, but not dry which creates the perfect pleasurable crunch. The chicken and fish tasted better than a lot of the restaurants in the area with the fish having a lightness to the breading that's sorely missed. Some of the chicken was weirdly tough though as if it was slightly undercooked.      Speaking of misses we have to talk about the dirty rice. Dirty rice is one of those dishes that seems like it either is absolute perfection or an abomination with no in-between. This unfortunately falls into the latter with it not only looking boring with all brown notes, but the initial taste as well as texture being an off putting creamy rancid trip to flavor hell. After a just a few bites my stomach turned which does not bode well for this dish. I have no idea what went wrong here, but it seems like it may have been sitting out too long. Even the smell was a bit rancid. At least it has a good ratio of ground beef to rice which a lot of places skimp on. They also attempted to add in some vegetables like peppers although they are barely noticeable.       Overall Surf's up is a good spot with friendly staff, decent prices, but some issues with quality. My advice is to make sure the cooking temps are correct and consistent. Definitely make sure if food is sitting idle, that it is kept at the mandatory minimum of 140 degrees farenheit to avoid it going rancid so quickly. Also, double check the orders before sending them out or edit the menu if it is outdated.
