Steamed wild-caught shrimp with potatoes and broccoli. Yummy!!!
    DeeDee M.

I happen to come across this business taking a walk one weekend. The owner was inside, she was cleaning up and she welcomed me to come in and take a look. Being busy, I declined the offer and asked if it was Black Owned, which it is. I made a mental note in my head that I would return. I returned to the business today, as I had promised myself mentally. The owner welcomed me again, I reminded her who I was and I placed an order of shrimp after confirming that they were wild caught. Yay!!! . She asked if I wanted to take the seafood home and I opted to have it steamed in the premises. She asked what type of vegetables I would like and I chose broccoli and potatoes, but there were other options available. The 4 stars is because the wait was a bit long for the steaming process, but we did have a nice friendly conversation about the opening of the business and everything else that was going on. She did apologize about the length of time, commenting to make sure the veggies would be fully cooked. I allowed her to season the food as she normally would. She was very accommodating regarding the packaging since she knew I was walking. She did ask if I wanted to add more seasoning, but I opted to keep her hand of seasoning. She was very pleasant, I wished her the best in her business journey and gave her good luck dollars. The seafood dish was good. It was not over seasoned, which I totally appreciated. The price was also reasonable. She said "come again," and I most definitely will.

I purchased a Gardenia about five years ago and it flowers from spring to fall. Gardenias are…read moreMogras in India and Jasmines in China. My kids love the Italian meatballs wrapped in a baked dough and the roasted duck. As for my favorite, it's the challah bread pudding. I've tried the fresh seafood - it's good too.

Let me count the ways! At least let me count the ways from a distance via ordering through your website. Both hubby & I were born & bred on the Long Island, NY, waterfront, & thus both of us have a serious background in catching (or buying) & cooking quality seafood. When we moved to Virginia more than 20 years ago, the lack of same was really our only singular hit of culture shock. Luckily, times have changed, & we can now purchase decent seafood from at least a small number of fairly close venues. And then I happened upon Citarella. Actually, I'd known of Citarella for some time, as they are apparently the only vendor offering "scungilli" (whelk, a close relative of conch), which is an Italian delicacy that - even though I'm not Italian - I was introduced to as a child & have loved ever since. Twenty years ago I was able to purchase it around Xmas time up at the Martin's in Winchester, VA, but no luck since then. When dear husband purchased the Citarella seafood cookbook "Joe Knows Fish" for me this past Xmas, it came with a free shipping certificate for any seafood purchased from the store. Not too shabby if you know what overnight shipping costs these days. So I gleefully purchased 2# of frozen scungilli as well as 1# of fresh Mako shark steaks. Everything arrived beautifully packaged with enough frozen gel packs to momentarily halt global warming. We enjoyed the shark steaks that very night, & they were as fresh & pristine as if we'd caught the fish ourselves. Absolutely delicious! Sliced up a pound of the scungilli the other night & served it true Italian style - in a wonderful zippy red sauce over spaghetti. (I even did a red drip candle thing over a raffia-coated Chianti bottle for true old-style NY Italian restaurant effect - lol!). The scungilli was tender, delicious - wonderful! Fast forward to last week when Citarella sent me a 50%-off-shipping coupon towards my next order - just in time for the Chinese Lunar New Year. Couldn't let that fly by! Ordered a 2# whole Black Sea Bass for delivery yesterday. One gets "butchering" options, & mine was for "cleaned, but head & tail left on". Fish arrived right on time & was perfectly cleaned - completely scaled, all fins removed, gutless. Again - fish looked as if it had just jumped out of the water - clear-eyed, fresh, not a whiff of "fish". Heaven! I steamed that baby last night Chinese-style (for luck in the New Lunar Year), & we devoured every bit. Needless to say, I see more orders for interesting seafood from Citarella heading my way in the future. Yes, I'll still purchase from our favorite local folks - Wegmans in Gainesville & Lobster Maine-ia in Chantilly - but when I want something different or special that's not available locally, Citarella it will be. Yes, prices are high & shipping is abominable, but you do get what you pay for.

This last time that I went, I got hard to find food products. I got frozen jute leaves for my Haitian friend. I got dried taro leaves for my Filipino co-worker. I myself got: bamboo leaves, frozen banana leaves, frozen bitter leaves, preserved duck eggs, fresh water chestnuts and tons of spices. I bought some meat from the butcher section and the guy sliced the meat up to my request. They have bones for soup. I saw durians, banana flowers, sorrel flowers, two types of bitter melons(the Asians and the Guyanese type), etc etc. They have Mexican products, Indonesian, Thai, Malaysian, Filipino, Indian and of course Chinese products. There is a huge variety of products to make dishes from at least half of the world. It is a typical Chinese grocery store. The aisles are clean and stocked with a lot of items. For example, the noodle aisle is 1/4 full of all types and width of rice noodles. So for those gluten free people, they will think that they are in heaven. They have other types as well. At the time, I was interested in getting noodles to make a few bowls of pho...therefore the bones and meat for it. They also have mushroom oyster sauce for the gluten free people. I digress. Anyways, give this supermarket a try. Don't get deter by the fish market with fishy smell when you walk in. If I were the owner, I would have put the fish shop in the back. BUT, what's done is done. Enjoy!
