This is a review for the restaurant. Fish market is great. Good variety and fresh! A bit disappointed with the restaurant experience. Atmosphere- casual dining, mixture of outdoor, cafe, bar, open market seating. Service- they try hard but the staff doesn't seem to know the menu very well Food- generally too much lemon and pepper. They have real good fresh seafood, not sure why they spice it up so much. We got a three course special. Started with mussels, then pan fried John Dory, finished with mango ice cream. Mussels was a bit bland except for all the pepper that I kept on tasting. Fish was very nicely done. I love the mango ice cream. We also got the seafood linguine. Nothing to write home about. Blend, and again filled with peppers. Drinks- good selection. The three course special gives you a glass of wine also Price- little on the expensive side as it's not really set up to be a high end restaurant. We Ended up spending ~$90 for three people for lunch Parking- free for one hour across the road. $4/hour right outside but you can redeem that in the restaurant. Others- would go for the fish market, maybe buy some seafood or deli food but wouldn't go for the restaurant again.

Seafood Central... Eat-food Central?! Jokes aside, Seafood Central is not only one of the few wet markets in Auckland stocked with a multitude of fresh fish and seafood, but now houses a revamped courtyard space, which offers an alfresco dining experience away from the hustle and bustle of the main waterfront area in Wynyard Quarter. A glorious winter's day made the courtyard restaurant a great spot for lunch. The partially-covered area has a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere: simple wooden tables, giant umbrellas, outdoor heaters, surrounding greenery, and live jazz music accompaniment (weekends only). The courtyard restaurant specialises in the fruits of our sea, boasting a menu that makes use of the freshest and best quality seafood. The Seafood Pappardelle ($19) weaved wide strips of pasta with a few pieces of prawn and squid, a couple of chunks of fish and one mussel in a bright red, tomato-based sauce. Not sure if the pasta or the sauce were homemade or not, but this was just a ho-hum pasta dish slathered with way too much sauce. Served next to a simple garden salad and a side of scrumptious thick-cut chips, we chose to get our Seasonal Fish ($18) - which happened to be gurnard that day - crumbed then fried. The bountiful portions of gurnard fillets were fresh and flaky... all it needed was a squirt of tartar sauce! Ditto the fancy fillet of grilled Salmon ($20), accompanied also with salad and sautéed new potatoes: a generously sized piece of fish cooked a perfectly medium rare. Based on the three dishes we had, I definitely recommend the fish fillet dishes because this way, you really get to taste the uninterrupted freshness and quality of the fish, the restaurant's strong suit. Service was alright; friendly but it did take a bit of waving down for them to come take our order and get our drinks topped, albeit not a terribly busy Sunday afternoon. Other than that, the lovely ambiance and pretty delish seafood fare at quite affordable prices will see me returning!

Fishy milk with skin, items from the freezer section. $43

I feel it is risky getting the seafood platter as most establishments appear to consider it a fine opportunity to throw whatever assemblage of items handy together and overcharge, Seafood Central is no exception. Though within spitting distance of chiller cabinets groaning with Poseidon's bounty at the excellent Auckland Fish Market, much of what arrived on my table, I suspect, started life in the freezer. What items were fresh were flavourless and undercooked, as in cold on the inside. The chowder tasted like warm milk with seafood pieces. Not to mention it had a skin, likely from a trip to the microwave. With the location and access to great seafood it is a real shame how badly Seafood Central turned out on this, my first visit. I will return but only to get Fish and Chips from nearby Oceanz Seafood

    Chips galore, but fish poor

The lemon salt they sprinkle on the crispy battered fish is Devine. It's just a shame that you gotta pay for vinegar at a fish and chip shop. But I suppose they do give you enough lemon to sour everything. ;-)

I love fish and chips, and since I heard NZ was famous for them, I was eager to try somewhere! I'm…read moresure there must be fish and chips closer to home, but sadly, if there are they aren't on Yelp yet, so I decided to go for a bit of a walk to the Ancient Mariner. I was a bit surprised to discover there was minimal seating indoors, although I'm not really sure why, since I've not dined in at many fish shops. The seating was small shippy-things (I'm a bit of a landlubber, so am not sure of their technical term) around large barrels. They were quite uncomfortable to sit on, but since we didn't want to walk all the way home with cold fish, sit on them we did. My husband and I shared two pieces of snapper and chips, with some malt vinegar. And oh god, it was delicious. The fish was amazing - fleshy and white and great flavour, and the batter was the perfect thickness and seasoned with lemon pepper (I think). Chips were chunky and crunchy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. I'll definitely be back here - even if I have to perch on an uncomfortable piece of ship furniture to do so!
