My next stop on a day exploring Devonport was out of being hungry and thankfully I found Manuka Restaurant at the right time. A cute and cozy cafe on a corner, it fit in so well with the other businesses nearby. A chalkboard sign of the specials caught my eye and it was settled. The interior is exposed brick and wood floors. Restrooms are to the back near the kitchen and clean. The staff was immediately welcoming and very attentive through my visit. I had a pilsner beer and the special chicken pie with salad - one thing I absolutely love about New Zealand is the fresh produce and vegetables, everything has amazing flavor. There were many happy groups, talking and enjoying the sunshine on that day; I loved the big windows overlooking the street and people walking by. Prices were reasonable for the super flavorful food. They had a dessert counter but I left without caving to any of those. If you're exploring Devonport, it's worth eating here. read more

I had the best meal and service at Manuka. I started with a large flat coffee and 1 liter sparkling water. The coffee was amazing and the sparkling water was super refreshing. The servers were all very helpful and attentive. I wanted to sit outside, and I'm so glad I did. I loved that I could see the harbor from the table along the sidewalk. There were a lot of people walking by, but the ambiance was pleasant overall. I ate the scallops with cauliflower purée and roasted asparagus. It was delicious! Omg, we may never eat again! Each of us ordered the Seafood Chowder. It came laden with a huge variety of delectable seafood. And even though we didn't quite finish our bowls, we should have stopped earlier. They gave us so much and it was so amazing. Never had anything so plentiful and tasty....TEN stars! Food was great, the patio seating offered a nice outside view with a glimpse of the ocean. And then the best part... Gelato!!

The place looks really cool and had a lot of people visiting. The items that looked good were not the ones I ordered. I did the specials and they were not the ones to get. Desserts and breakfast foods were what looked good. I got a sesame chicken salad and prawns. The chicken was undercooked and tasted weird and the prawns were tiny. This restaurant draws a big crowd on a Friday night but service leaves a lot to be desired. My mom and I were seated at the very back after initially told that every indoor table was booked. We needed an extra chair to place our bags. The waitress pulled a chair over from another reserved table. Within a minute, the owner came over and said the chair was needed even though nobody arrived. He grabbed our bags and tried to put them on the floor. Let me start saying this was my first emotional experience with food. It was so good it made me misty-eyed. Auckland was sunny today, so that meant I should get up and do something. So I hopped on the ferry, asked a local for the best café, and headed down the street, past the hotel, across the first intersection. I read through the menu, thinking the smoked chicken with avocado, tomato, and brie sounded phenomenal if I could get it as a salad, which I did. IT. WAS. SO. GOOD. I can't even find words to describe the chicken; "delicious" would be an understatement, "decadent" wouldn't do it justice. It was really late on a weekend afternoon and we were wandering down the street and smelled the lovely scents coming from this restaurant so we had to give it a try. It's casual and filled with wood and local color and has quite a few seats outdoors. We looked at the menu and had to try two NZ standards: Lived the green mussels and the lamb shank. The mussels were done in a coconut curry sauce and were perfectly done. Cooked to just tender. We loved the bread that went with it as well. The lamb shank was really flavorful and we just loved the roasted carrots and potatoes that came with it. So satisfying! So you are in the mood for some hearty fare. This is the place. :-) read more

Excellent all around! We had the fish and chips, which comes with a small salad; & also the salmon & asparagus risotto. Both were VG, served fresh and hot. The F&C wasn't greasy and I believe the chips were double fried like ponmes frites. The salmon was moist and flavorful. I believe might have been prepared poached befor adding to the risotto. We walked by Manuka this morning on our self-guided tour around Devonport. Seeing how busy it was, we mentally bookmarked it for a potential lunch spot. Boy, were we glad we did! This spot is on point. The hubby and I shared half a dozen oysters, a seafood chowder, and a steak sandwich. Hey, after a walk around a huge chunk of this hilly island, we were starving! Don't judge us! Our three dishes (+ a couple of NZ tap beers) was just right and oh so tasty. So glad we decided to eat here. And after a short walk over to a disappointingly closed chocolate factory, we ended up coming back for some dessert. I have been here a few times for breakfast and dinner. The vegetarian eggs bene is most excellent. Potatoes, mushroom and spinach perfectly complement the poached eggs and nice crusty bread. Orange juice is fresh squeezed and local. I'm astounded every time how quick the service is. Really great spot. read more

We were tourists who stopped for lunch in their sidewalk cafe. Lunch was excellent, my cappuccino was great, and service was good--I can heartily recommend this place. Great location. Close to the pier and located at the corner of the main tourist street. A good location to stop at for a small bite to eat after shopping and going up to Victoria Point. (Awesome view of Auckland and surrounding harbor. Unfortunately have to give the restaurant only 3 stars. My wife and I split an order of fish and chips and a few drinks. While the salad that came withe meal was good, The fish was really thin soggy and lightly breaded. Some of the other meals looked good but I'm not sure I would go back. I actually loved this place, even though I was not a huge fan of the meal we ordered. The whole ordering thing was slightly hilarious, we ordered dips and a margarita. It was only when he asked me what size margarita would I like (I was thinking EEE-Frigging-NORMOUS) when I realised he was talking about a pizza. We clarified, and awaited the dip platter. We were then served a plate of chips. (Which may have been better than the dips that arrived after that was all sorted out) Yes, Dips and Chips..I get it..I am mostly deaf...I get it. Very busy for a Sunday of a long weekend. One of the busiest cafes on the strip and no surprises there -- very good menu, great coffee and staff are friendly and quick about what they do. Food is fine although both orders had errors -- such as asked for butter, not cream cheese and husband asked for no grilled tomato. Minor problems really. This really cute corner place in Devonport was where I tried whitebait fritters for the first time - they make them real nice here! There's a wide variety of very Kiwi dishes here, from seafood to meat to salads, and I've found the service to be as good, if not better, as all the other nice spots in Devonport. My calamari caesar salad was drenched in dressing with the cheese all lumped together in one corner of the plate (unintentionally); the calamari was very greasy. I was not going to write a review for this restaurant, but in re-visiting this restaurant's other reviews, I really must. My experience, apparently, was not a fluke. A group of four of us decided to lunch at Manuka on our visit to Devonport. Someone ordered the seafood chowder, another salmon. I ordered an omelet. It was flat, burnt, (no, really, burnt) and inedible. I told the waitress. She replied, "This is how we cook our omelets, there is nothing wrong with it." I'm sorry, I said, this is not acceptable. Distressed, she went back to tell the chef before removing the dish. She returned and said, "Chef is wounded, his heart is wounded that you do not think this omelet is satisfactory." Stunned and feigning concern for the chef, I asked her to take it away. She then reached into the plate, grabbed a handful of omelet, ate it in front of our friends and the other customers, and said, "There is nothing wrong with this!" At this stage her actions rendered accepting the omelet and continuing to eat it moot. Hopefully, she is not at the mercy of a temperamental chef with anger management problems? Please take this back, I said. "Can we cook it again for you?", she asked. If this is how you cook your omelets, no, I said. "Can we get you anything else?" At this point, my appetite was exhausted, so I said, no. The omelet at Manuka is now a topic of lively conversation, but not one I would recommend. read more
