My vegetarian girlfriend ordered poached egg on toast with baked beans, probably the safest option for a vege on the menu right? Yeah, nah. So the beans came complete with chorizo, oddly enough, so when the waitress came back over she said that it does in fact say on the menu that the baked beans come with chorizo (eh?) so she disappears, we look at a menu and of course there's no mention of chorizo, she reappears and confirms that in fact there's no mention of chorizo on the baked beans menu and that she'll bring out a new baked beans sans-chorizo. At this point my girlfriend makes the observation that all they'll probably do is scoop the chorizo out and bring it back, I kinda thought she was joking but no. They bring the 'fresh order of beans' out, one bite, one bite of chorizo. I think she's overreacting but no, they failed to even hide the fact that they just pulled the slices of chorizo out by leaving in some chorizo. I take it back to the waitress who tries to tell me that what I thought was chorizo was actually tomato sauce (eh?) and that the chef swears it was freshly made. Which assuming the chef is telling the truth means that they're probably reusing all their utensils for different meals, where's the health and safety in that? Are they making a nice waldorf salad and then using the same tongs on a green salad for someone with a severe nut allergy? Is it going to take someone going into anaphylactic shock for them to use different utensils for different dishes? They're charging $9 for beans - surely they could afford a couple of new serving spoons for that poor chef in the back? Anyway, so they take away the tainted legumes and at this point I'm sick of saying chorizo, and sick of typing chorizo. Now, I love chorizo but this is the last time I'm going to type that word, the waitress apologizes most sincerely, obviously it's not her fault, no biggie. Then the manager comes out, accuses me of not knowing the difference between tomato and chorizo, accuses me of lying, says they've been cooking chorizo and beans for 23 years or something equally stupid. She says all she has is the chefs word against ours, despite the handful of chorizo I gave to the waitress and the fact that why would anybody kick up such a fuss over chorizo-free baked beans, completely ignorant to the fact that her chefs are cross-contaminating god knows what with who knows what, then makes out she's being generous by not charging us for the plate of under-cooked eggs and chorizo-laden beans. Devonport has a great reputation in Auckland. It's a beautiful little seaside town filled with stunning villas and friendly faces. It is kind of surprising that there aren't more really good restaurants down here. But then the people of Devonport don't like anything that is likely to draw heaps of people. The introduction of a Subway was a huuuggggeee deal. Manuka is a good restaurant. It holds many great memories for me and was always the go-to for my friends and I. Sit out the front and watch the world go by, or grab a table inside. The service is made up of foreign travelers and Devonport natives making for a fun and friendly environment. The pizzas are sooo delicious and they have some of the best fries and aioli I've had. They are open for breakfast lunch and dinner and seriously do every time of the day well. Meals are fresh, tasty and generous. and They don't break the bank. Manuka is a safe choice that will always satisfy, and in a great location to boot. read more

On my rare visits to Devonport, I have frequently visited Manuka. It has always provided solid service and food to date, and seems like the ideal place to go for my trip over the bridge. Seated outside, we are quickly tended to by the extremely friendly water and drinks are served. Having familiar staff always seems to add something to the experience also, giving a sense of consistency. I have ordered the pizza many times and is very enjoyable sitting outside on the street in the sun with a beer. The pizza is very traditional, with the thin base and light topping. Although it is a large enough to give my stomach a decent hit. For some reason Devonport strikes me as a place seriously lacking in waterfront cafes, of a decent quality also. Manuka does it justice though, just close enough to see the water and get that waterfront vibe. read more

Situated in the heart of Devonport on the bustling Victoria Road (well it's bustling compared to the rest of Devonport anyway). Seating on the pavement means you are the unlikely sandwich filling between busy traffic and a constant stream of pedestrians. This also means the waiting staff have to run a gauntlet through to the tables, which looks awkward at best and pure terrifying when serving food! Look past the environment and you are greeted with a menu offering a variety of mouth watering treats. If you are stuck for inspiration, go for the chicken pie, it is the best pie I have had in, oh, let's say a couple of years. A delicious creamy filling topped with perfectly cooked puff pastry didn't just hit the spot, it redefined the target. The quality of the food more than makes up for the noisy surroundings. read more

I decided I wanted to go to Devonport for a change of scenery. While we were there we saw this lovely big restaurant with lots of outdoor seating in the sun so we decided to stop for a coffee. Both my boyfriend and I got mocha coffees as a treat, the guy serving us was so friendly and funny. The coffees took a wee while, but we didn't mind because we were enjoying sitting outside in the sun. When they arrived however, they looked like art with a kiwiana style design on the top, so cool! They also tasted incredible and came with a little chocolate fish on the side, which is nicer than the regular marshmallows. I definitely want to come back here to try their food, because if it is anything like their coffees I can imagine it's amazing! read more

Manuka is somewhat of a stalwart in Devonport - it's been around for years and whenever I've visited the service and food has remained solid and scrummy. The best thing on the menu is their selection of wood-fired pizzas, which are perfect for sharing with their delicious fries with aioli. My favourite pizza is the 'Manuka' - salmon, marinated in herbs and spices, home-smoked and served with capers, cream cheese and dill. And the best thing is it tastes healthier than your standard, greasy pizza! They also do a good brunch/lunch menu if you're dining during the day, and great coffee. read more

Pulled pork is a favorite of mine and having traveled extensively thought the US from the Carolinas to the midwest to the south east and of course Texas I have tasted many varieties. The char of the BBQ is the key and only after that can the various rubs and sauces compliment the meat. Hours of dedicated low and slow cooking will make the meat fall of the bone and tear or shred in a unique preparation of pulled pork. The tomato based (sweet or spicy or a combo) or vinegar based sauce only heighten the experience. I can't say that I haven't had better, but for being half way across the globe, Culpeper represented well. Available via the meat board menu item, the Boston Butt Pulled Pork was the main course. The purple slaw and curly fries added to the feast. The table also enjoyed the Mac N Cheese and roasted cauliflower. Being located on the warf doesn't lend itself to many passers by, but I was lucky enough to see and smell the fine offerings of this establishment during my stay, and I am thankful we tried it. A seat with a view of the harbor was also appreciated and if the sun were out this day, it may have provided a nice sunset as a means to end a wonderful day in Auckland.

Every bite was incredible. We also had the burrata salad with beetroot, orange, and hazelnut, which was such a great combination of flavors and textures. Fresh, creamy, sweet, and crunchy all in one dish. And of course, we had to pair dinner with a Prophet's Rock Pinot Noir. Since we love Pinot Noir, this was the perfect pairing for the meal. Amano absolutely lived up to the hype. From the food to the overall experience, this was easily one of the highlights of our time in Auckland. 10 stars if Yelp would let me! We had reservations and got a lovely table near those windows. They recommended sharing plates so we had the pappardelle which comes with a lamb ragu, the monk fish, and the cauliflower side. The main courses were excellent. The ragu was a nice comfort food with a rich taste over homemade noodles. The monk fish was light and tropical with a fennel and fruit side. These two dishes were nice compliments of each other. The cauliflower wasn't my fav but it was more of a personal taste so don't keep me from having you try it. I chose a local wine which was delicious. Love trying local wine when possible. We walked from our hotel so no parking worries. Service was excellent. Our server walked us through several of her and of patrons favorite options. Great stop.
