There were also 4 people sharing this one bathroom, including the room on the other side. At one point there were men in the adjoining room. Since it was a "Jack and Jill" bathroom people had to lock and unlock the door after use, so it would be accessible for everyone. That meant everyone was touching each doorknob with unwashed hands each time! Certainly it wasn't hygienic to say the least. The bathroom often had feces left on the toilet and on the floor on one occasion. When they did clean after we complained it was never a good cleaning, only the largest most obvious "situations" were cleaned. The kitchen was really messed up. There were supposedly two choices at each meal but the patients could never choose or know what they were. I asked for a menu but only received it for one day and even when I wrote down my choices I did not get them. Every meal was just sent to people and if you didn't like it or couldn't eat it you'd have to either call the kitchen who rarely answered the phone, or tell a nurse or aide. The quality of the food itself was low. The only reason I gave this facility any stars was because of the using staff. They have some very caring, knowledgeable, wonderful staff, who don5heir best to accommodate your needs. I would not recommend this facility because it was not clean or hygienic and the food was undependable and just not good. I am not a picky person when it comes to food and usually do not mind hospital food.

Now called Vero Health and Rehab. Very disappointed in the care and attention given to my 82 year…read moreold mother. Continuity of care and communication was very unsatisfactory. In four words, This Is The Place!…read more I am 66 and have been confined to a wheelchair for the last couple of years. When my wife needed surgery on her foot (no weight-bearing for ten weeks) she decided that she needed some sort of a break from having me home all the time. I have Home Health Aides who get me up and also back into bed. I was in a local rehab and a retirement community (for more rehab) after the surgery that put me in the wheelchair in 2007. I wasn't keen to go back to a retirement community, but it was necessary. I had bladder infections and odd colds that were going around the community. When I came home after over a year I had trouble with my bowels and I thought all of this was par for the course. This time I was determined to pick a better place to stay. I looked around on the web, and one of the places that caught my eye was Amesbury Village (AV) in the next town over. I wanted a place with Internet access and a generally higher standard. AV didn't have Internet (sort of) so I was resigned to having a crap shoot on the services. I was booked in for respite care for three weeks in May 2010. I never thought I'd recommend a retirement community, but AV is so good I can't let it go unnoticed. The negatives I mention later may need more words than the positives, but the place is great for rehab, respite care, and residential stays. If you or your elderly relatives need attention, in my view you'll have trouble doing better. The main reason for this is the staff. I've been in communities where half the staff is just there because you can get a job as an aide with little training, and in those sorts of places they just want to get through their shift with as little work as possible. One place I was at had an aide called "Lost Larry," who often vanished from the night shift for several hours. He always had a glib explanation for his absence, and the rest of the staff had given up trying to find him. In all my time at AV, no-one ever failed to do their job, and most of the time they would go above and beyond to satisfy your needs. My specific need was for extra cookies in the evening snack (not that I needed them, I was just greedy), and if one aide satisfied such a selfish need, then every aide from that night on would automatically give me the same every night. But it's not about spoiled brats like me. Retirement home residents are mainly made up of people with dementia and Alzheimer's, and when they're not being combative, they're staring at the walls. But people you might call no-hopers got plenty of staff attention. I couldn't do this with those people, but the staff is dedicated. And when you've looked around a bunch of retirement communities, they all look the same. You really have to see them between nine a.m. and six p.m. So let's give a big hand to the people who work there. Staff Nurse Andrea and her afternoon/evening crew, and Staff Nurse Jane and her morning people, including Ms. Boom-De-Ay (sorry, in-joke there). I can't think I've met a single person there who I thought should be replaced by someone with a better attitude. There's plenty to do, but of course most of the people there love the old folk's staples like bingo and old-fashioned music. But Jane, the Activities Director, along with her staff, have a whole host of things going on. While I was there we had a visit from a guy who brought along a whole bunch of exotic animals, including a sixteen-foot Burmese python, a smaller snake, a rat, and a whole gang of more cuddly creatures. Almost all the residents watched and stroked the beasts. To give you some idea of how the staff cares, I had an appointment at a hospital on the day when the lift broke for a couple of hours. Donna, the Unit Manager, not only apologized profusely, but called the hospital to say I wasn't coming and fixed up an alternative date and time - all without asking. Although AV keeps its residents on the floor that their rooms are in, many people can roam around. I'd often go down to the sun deck and work on my tan, while watching cardinals at the bird feeder and squirrels athletically swinging down to get to the seeds first. This used to be my favorite place to avoid Jimmy and Colleen of the Therapy Department, but they found me in the end. What's not to like? Not much. In order of annoyance, from least to most: The elevator is slow and unreliable, but it's better than some I've seen and a replacement would cost a million dollars. The food is good by residential home standards. If you like old folk's comfort foods, it won't be too bad. The lack of Internet: Not total, as you could pick up poor signals from someone's network a hundred yards away. And the worst point? The lack of reliable hot water. Quite often you couldn't shower because the water was barely above cold. They should do something about this as soon as possible. But in spite of these faults, I'd go back if I have to.

She saw that it wasn't a prison. She had the freedom to go where she wanted in her electric wheelchair. She spent her first night in the family room watching her favorite Red Sox on a big screen! Everyone was so nice here. Just stellar. They understood. It will take some time, but I think she'll be happy. This really is a great place. It's clean and large and there is so much to do! It's like a mini resort. Thanks, Rockingham, for making Ma feel welcomed. It meant a lot to us.

I'll just say this, the staff to patient ratio is amazing. Their quality, the same. I will never go anywhere else. Like folks say, if it works, don't fix it. Quick note on the food there. I'm a diabetic. I'm 6' 8" tall, over 300 lbs., and 67 years old. Because of my poor health (no surprise) I've had to give up smoking, drinking, etc... What's left...? Food, dining, cooking, etc... Yes, I'm pretty obsessed with my mealtimes. After a couple of "miscommunications" at the start, this team of food pros really came through for me. Once they figured me out and what I was HOPING for, they delivered. That's a first for me. We went high on the proteins and veggies. I couldn't have been happier. I didn't want to go back home. They never treated me anything like a, "oh no, it's YOU again!" Folks, if you can be a pest from time to time, their splendid treatment of me is RARE. Bottom Line! I'm not easy to take care of. They made it look easy because of their COMPETENCE! An important word these days. Some have no idea what it even means. Well these folks do and I couldn't have been happier there.

I asked about pain management for a compression fracture in her spine, and was told they'd call the doctor about it. Tuesday I went to visit and she hadn't been evaluated and still hadn't received pain management. She was in a lot of pain and needed meds. I asked the nurses again, and once again was told they'd call the doctor. That evening I noticed my mother was sitting in an old, wet diaper. I spoke to a nurse who gave me an attitude saying she was changed that morning... This was 5pm, she should have been changed hours before. I again, asked about the doctor and pain management and was told they'd give her Tylenol and call the doctor. As I was sitting with my mother I was watching how the interactions were between other patients and staff, and I didn't like what I saw. Dirty residents, residents being spoken to with irritation, and one that was being led pretty aggressivly by the arm somewhere. You could tell it was too fast for her. My mother was supposed to be fed her meals and they just left trays there. She has alzheimers/dementia and wasn't able to feed herself. She was also complaining about pain in her stomach, which I wanted addressed by the doctor. I decided I wanted my mother out of there, and as soon as possible. Wednesday morning I reached out to another facility and set up a tour. It was clean, didn't smell, the residents weren't all over the place, the nurses and aides were all friendly and management gave me so much information that I never received at Maplewood. I felt happy leaving there. It had a much more homey feel to it. Maplewood was disgusting. It's dirty with smears of who knows what on the walls, spills on the floor, and the floors were sticky. The furniture is dirty, old and falling apart. There was also an overwhelming smell of urine. The place feels messy, chaotic and cold. The staff is rude and have horrible communication skills. They always looked bothered when I'd ask about her needing meds, or needing to be changed or for anything really. I went in and told them I wanted to get her into another facility and have it ready and set for them to work on the transfer. I was told not to go to this other facility because they were closing (not true), they weren't good, and they have some ex employees of theirs, and I might want to make sure I want her to go there. I tolf them yes, I want her to go there. The nurse was arguing with me that my mother was changed, and I don't believe she was. Not with how old that diaper looked and how full it was. Everyone that was cold and unfriendly before became friendly and accommodating on the nursing floor. Everyone in the lobby and management that were initially friendly while trying to get us in there, turned cold and unfriendly after I wanted my mother moved. So much for being professional. They even tried to get me to take my mother to the new place on my own, knowing she'd be leaving against medical advice and it would mess up her Medicare. There were maybe two nurses that were friendly but overall, most of the staff was unwelcoming and seemed annoyed with their job. I heard from the social worker this morning telling me she was just sitting down to get to my mother's admission forms and saw a note that I was transferring her and was I sure they took her insurance, and did they even have space for her? It's Thursday... My mother was sent to their facility Monday night at 5pm and you're just now getting to her file? There was no care plan made, nobody called to speak to me about her medical chart or how they planned to take care of her. For someone that was admitted with a compression fracture and in pain, they failed at adequately caring for her. If you can avoid Maplewood, please do!
