There's sumptuous croissants, perfect little lemon curd tarts, and a chocolate-caramel-coconut biscuit slice that I spilled all over my car trying to eat before I got home. All baked daily on the premises they are fresh so if cake is your fancy and you do indulge it should be a scrumptious occasion. Unfortunately I didn't get to taste the coffee as they had run out of soya milk (9am on a Friday which was a tad disorganized). Besides the freshly baked goods the best bit about this place is the wall of cycling art and posters. I'd get a seat facing this if you can as it's the only good view around given the cafe is next to a car park. To get to the toilets you need to through the kitchen. They're a bit grubby so avoid if possible. Service is fine but to be honest the cafes up the road are prettier, more comfortable, make great coffee and modern gourmet treats.

An old derelict looking shop front, broken glass boarded up with ply wood. The old plastic sign a sign of the past. You walk into the shop and it's like you're in a time warp, especially if you step to the left and then to the right, you put your hands on your hips and you move in tight. I'll continue. The lights are off and the door leading to the back is open. I can see something glowing green. The old man who owns the shop stands behind the counter. He is silent. His face unmoved by the recognition of another human being in the shop. Old posters and stickers advertising confectionary and soft drink climb the walls and the bench top looks like it would fit better in the fifties, as does the decor. Boxes of mainstream chocolates span the shelves. I ask for a milkshake. "What flavour?" He asks in a soft dry tone. He informs me of the flavours that they sell, "Chocolate, Strawberry, Caramel and Vanilla." I decide upon Strawberry. He sets to making it. He picks up the old silver cup and bends down to where I can't see him to fill it up with the ingredients. There's a unsettling feel in here and I ask myself, 'Did I tell anyone where I was going?' Of course the man is harmless and the shop is dark only because of a lack of light, (A truism I'm sure.) and not because of any evil, on top of that the milkshake tastes great. He asks for $2.90 and then enters it into the analog cash register. I take a seat and drink it, I think, this would be a nice place to come and do some work, then I decide that I would probably be kicked out if I brought in modern technology like a laptop. It's the sort of place where you can imagine being ejected for having a conversation too loudly. I leave and take my photo. An old couple waiting at the bus stop tell me I'm the second person they've seen taking photo's of the shop. They continue to tell me that I was lucky to be sold a milkshake as he has a reputation of refusing to sell anything. I am further intrigued by the mystery that has not yet even begun to unfold. A truly bizarre shop and one that I think everyone should check out and try your luck at getting a milkshake at genuine 1992 prices.

I must admit, I was scared, alone in a dark milk bar run by a man known as 'Dr Death' or 'Dracula'. However, when I walked in, he was nowhere to be seen. Then, from behind a stack of boxes at the rear, a frail old man in neatly folded clothes who would have to be at least 80 appeared. I asked him for a milkshake. 'What flavour?' he asked in a heavy Greek accent. 'Caramel' I replied. 'To drink here?' he said, to which I replied 'yes'. 'Three dollars' he replied. I paid him for the milkshake, and after putting the money into the 1950s era till, he set about making the milkshake. He used one of those old school milkshake makers, and poured the milkshake into an ancient aluminium milkshake cup, and handed it to me. 'Been busy today?' I asked. 'Busy enough to be making money' he replied with a laugh. I took the milkshake and sat down, and took in the interior of the Olympia. It looked as though it hadn't changed one bit since 1955. 1950s era signage, decor, chocolate boxes and advertising were everywhere, and the entrance sported a large Art Deco mosaic on the floor with the word 'OLYMPIA'. I drank the milkshake, which was suprisingly good, nice and creamy and the taste of caramel not too overpowering, a bargain at $3, before handing the owner the cup and saying goodbye. As I was leaving, the owner waved and said 'see you later'. He really is a sweet old man. I strongly suggest everyone come and check out the Olympia while it's still here, the owner will eventually die or retire some day, and then the place will be bought by hipsters who turn it into some 'retro cafe' and charge a fortune for everything.

Bayside Gelato is right at the Promenade side entrance to Harbourside and really popular with the tourists and locals in our sweltering Aussie summers. Happy to see the specials menu I chose an omelette which had red pepper, chorizo and a cheese, the name of which unfortunately has skipped my mind, but was ultimately delicious. This paired with a flat white which was smooth and with good body, and my lazy start was on the up. There's enough on the menu to keep you interested with breaky/brunch/lunch options. Staff are friendly and accommodating, and our server checked on us without 'overchecking' as can be the case at some cafes. This was quite well timed - as we did need another caffeine injection prior to departure (it would be a very long day). In the past I've taken advantage of the function room for a business breakfast which was great as we had a space to ourselves, a good option if you want to get the team together but also have an opportunity to give a quick presentation (without disturbing the rest of the cafe folk or breaching corporate confidentiality...). Entry is from the small car park to the left side of the building (not the main council car park located to the right). I visited on a cold and rainy day, possibly the worst time to take advantage of the location, and it was still lovely. Warmed by an outdoor heater, the seating is outdoor undercover. Orders are placed at the counter, but food is delivered to the table. Seating is comfortable but not luxurious. The staff were very friendly and highly attentive. The menu is all day breakfast or lunch, prices aren't cheap but based on quality of fare I would say they are reasonable. I ordered a full breakfast consisting of bacon, sausage, egg, mushrooms, toast and hash brown. The menu price was $20 which is at the upper end of what I'd expect to pay for a cafe breakfast. I asked for them to hold the hash brown as I didn't want it. What arrived was a mountain of good food. 3 full bacon rashers, 2 sunny side up eggs, 2 beef sausages, 3 slices of premium loaf toast, a halved grilled tomato and sauted mushroom. I have to assume they added extra bacon in lieu of the hash brown because there was no room left on the plate for anything else. It was delicious, pure and simple. Perhaps it was the cold weather, perhaps it was the cosy warmth of the heater, perhaps it was waiting until midday for breakfast. Even accounting for all those things, the food was delicious. The bacon was premium quality, the eggs were free range, the sausages were gourmet, everything was cooked perfectly. We asked for a coffee and that came in a big mug, ready to warm the hands, perfectly suited to the day. Maybe it was a one off to have such a good experience, and it helps when you're not expecting it, but I will be heading back here.
