This Community has recently provided us with two special and personal experiences. First, my mother-in-law enjoyed and when I say enjoyed, this is very understated, a recovery period in their on-site Caleb Hitchcock Health Center. This was followed by a bad fall in her own home, which required surgery and two+ months of ambulatory therapy. Second, our daughter was offered and accepted a position with the Community. I was able to spend two and half hours one evening during an earlier snow fall to "safely Uber" my daughter home after her shift. While there I was able to stroll and observe the Community first hand. In that time, I chatted with the most wonderful residents, diverse, each within their own level of life and ability. However ALL appeared happy and with a most impressive sense of close community and caring for one and other. My favorite component is the Aquatic Center. Top notch with scheduled low impact exercise classes, monitored open swim lanes, and a gradual ramp for aided aqua therapy. Not to put aside their adjacent Health and Wellness Center with fitness and movement classes for all. The dining facilities are NOT run of the mill either. Ranging for Casual formal dining, private spaces for residents to dine with visitors, and even door service. The menu was quite impressive offering a new menu everyday catering to all dietary needs and wellness, too. Now, entertainment. I happened upon an open auditorium with a large number of residents enjoying a live Piano, Violin, and Cello performance. I stood in the doorway mesmerized leaving the snowstorm behind. From there I wondered into their Library with an ample and diverse section of book stacks, warm well lit seating areas, and during the day a Librarian. In warmer, months the grounds are park like, the landscaping is beautiful and offers a number of pathways with spaces sit, enjoy nature, and let a little Vitamin D seep in. I'm only scratching the surface and I could go on, however, I close with this: I hope to be as fortunate one day as the Duncaster Residents to partake in such a well planned, maintained, and caring Community to help extend the enjoyment of our sunset.

Many of our friends recommended the Southington Care Center, and we were fortunate to get in there. I cannot speak more highly of this organization! Attentive, skilled, and caring Nurses, CNAs, and Aides. And the PTs, OTs, and Speech Therapists were not only highly skilled and effective, but they all had amazing and genuine interpersonal skills - a very rare combination. The supporting staff from Admissions to the Social Worker/Transitions professionals, and other Staff were simply great. Other reviews mentioned issues with the food - but we found the food to be unexpectedly well-prepared and delicious! Sure, 5 weeks, 3 meals a day, to hundreds of patients, there were a couple "misses". But my Wife and I were stunned at how good the food was overall. Great job everybody! We are SO grateful that Carol was able to go to the Southington Care Center. (A Note to management... and this is NOT a SCC issue... I STRONGLY recommend you find a different Wheelchair Ambulatory Service than that from "Nazim" [860-990-1172]. I saw this calendar just outside the entrance to the Harbor area, and it looked great. Well, every single day I went to visit my mother there wasn't ever ANYTHING going on. Everyone was just sitting on the recliners asleep. I never witnessed a single activity. I had a private aid with my mom every day all day as well, and she told us there wasn't anything going on during the day. Secondly, while my mother was in the facility I had to reach out to a few people in upper management, Peg Sullivan and Jenn Brin, to get some basic questions answered. The emails or voicemails I left were rarely responded to. I'd have to get in my car and drive down there to get any communication across. This was very annoying. Thirdly, I reached out to get a couple simple things addressed in my mom's room. There was a ton of dirty dust on the outside of the AC vent register on the ceiling. I wanted it cleaned off. You guessed it, nobody responded. When taking the tour of the facility, I noticed a lot of base trim work was removed in the large community area where the sofas and TVs are. I asked the salesperson about that. She said they were doing some renovating and painting. A month later and the base trim was still not reinstalled. If I had to guess, I'm sure it's still not reinstalled at this very moment. My mom's house was very neat, and in perfect repair, so these 2 minor things were important for me to get addressed. Finally, when all was said and done and my mom was no longer living here, they owed me some money. I went back and forth several times asking when I'd get it. It took them over a month to get me the money they owed me. That was a bit insulting. For the amount of money you pay to live there, they really should have MUCH better service. Some words of advice - stay away. If you absolutely have to move a loved one here, get them their own private aid and make sure they have a lot of visitors.

She requires an enormous amount of care and is a difficult personality. Other than a period when this place was run by a psycho named Tanya, the staff has learned how to treat my relative, is enormously patient with her, and has kept her healthy, alive, and well. Zero falls. Zero infections. They call me if they find even the tiniest scrape on her. This is NO small feat given how long she has been there, and through the pandemic no less. The downside is that there is very little communication and because turnover is so high just when I will get to know that one person handles one thing, that person is gone, and I've got no update as to whom I should now contact. Voice mails and emails normally go unanswered. There are supposed to be monthly case reviews however it's very sporadic and random. I'm also supposed to get quarterly statements about her money in her account but haven't received one in ages. I also don't think the residents are EVER taken anywhere. At all. The last trip I can remember was like 10 years ago. To a Walmart. But there are very nice grounds, and the rooms are large and comfortable. Like I say, mixed bag. Could probably do better and could definitely do worse.

An interestig thing happened when I sought VA assistance with a claim process recently. I contacted…read morethe VA SO throught the 1-800 number and scheduled a telephone appointment. I received a call at the time I requested, and went over my claim with the "rep. I asked for his name and he provided it. A couple of weeks later I received claim paperwork from the VA office in Michigan and I needed to discuss some things with the Newington VA SO that I spoke to earlier. When I called the 1-800 number I was told that they couldn't direct me to the person I was looking for so I called the Newington VA and I was initially told that the Person I was looking to speak to didn't work there. I was then given a number to call and told that I would have to leave a message because no one was going to answer directly. I did exactly that. I never received a call back (I had mentioned in the message that the person I purportedly had dealt with didn't work there and I was curious about that) . The next time I called, the number was not in service. I googled the name of the particular ghost I talked to originally and found out that he hadn't worked for the VA in two years! If there is a conspiracy mixed up in all this, I'm not sure what that is, but it was obvious that that office did want to talk to me. I needed the the help of that office and I was stonewalled time and again. I'm more than a little curious now.

Saint Francis Emergency unit was almost comically evil, I threw up like 8 times on the floor and…read morewas ignored, it was only after my mother visited did the nurses (who were taunting other patients along with the security "Tyler from Texas Shut the fuck up", as one of the guards was going through his wallet.) gave me an old-school IV after far too long, I was moved to like room 1, facing some sort of alarm, clock thing on the wall that would chime. I Kept asking for ativan and the nurses joked to each other about me asking for it saying "They needed ativan". Anyways, as I was saying, the chime on the wall was accompined by a call asking for an ambulance in code. It took her asking like 20 times when I was on the verge of passing out for them to transfer me to a place that was like 5 minutes away, Mount Sinai. The EMT girl on the way hit my arm and left a bruise, when I told her I was nauseous she ripped open an alcohol swab and stuck it in my face, acting like I was a know-it-all saying, "Oh I thought you knew this" she then said she was gonna "sit behind me for the rest of the ride" This was an absolute nightmare, my mrn number was 1835555, and when I was admitted I was in crisis. A police officer from the floor underneath the room they locked me in due to covid said he wanted to "Shoot me in the head 5 times" and all the staff heard. The staff then assured me he "got a call" Quality of care was very neglectful, save for one male nurse. The type of care: They Straight up told me they were doing a "rapid taper detox" Off my benzos I had been taking for 5 years. When I told them I know tapering too fast off benzos can cause brain damage and that I knew depression was mostly situational they didn't care. This was April 5th of 2024, There were a few good nurses but they were mainly a male nurse and Julia, everyone from the front desk workers to nurses act like nothing is their job. There needs to be 1000% more accountability in these work settings, other countries aren't like this. Shout-out Matt and Julia. 1 star, I basically did everything myself at one of my weakest times of my life.
