Probably once a state of the art senior & rehab facility back in the 1960's & 70's, this is truly not the case in the present day. My entire family was appalled at the crumbling conditions, under trained "professional caregivers," and many potential health and safety violations. We recently had no other options discharging elderly family member from the hospital. Resulting in two agonizing days & nights not only for our loved one, but the family as whole. We scrambled desperately to locate a qualified, up-to-date post operative facility. Every experience at Hughes left them with low marks of 1 or 2 on a scale of 1-10. The Registered nursing staff is virtually understaffed and over worked. Which leaves much of the "care" to under qualified CNA's to basically run the roost. Not one was hospitable or caring. For example, our family member was left on an uncomfortable bed pan for over an hour, despite numerous attempts to call the staff. To mitigate the issue, we requested a bedside commode. However, the call light wasn't answered again for a good twenty minutes. So our family member made her way precariously to the commode. Then to add insult, when we came in the next day to transfer her another facility, the Commode was still un-emptied 24+ hours later! The rooms are small and under designed for 1 patient, let alone 2, which made both residents very uncomfortable. An old window mounted air conditioning unit struggled to cool the tight space. Halls are narrow and a parking lot for various items, such as, dining carts, pressure cuff carts, beds, wheel chairs, house keeping items (some very filled with soiled bedding). This clutter generates chaos and unsafe conditions for unstable residents needing the use of a handrail. I could go on, but enough said. She was transferred to a 5 star facility that honestly is a DAYdream versus the NIGHTmare. Please do not even consider this facility and subject any loved to Hughes under any circumstances. My heart goes out to all of the remaining patients and residents who have no other means to move on.

Being 86 this year, living alone with a bum foot from a previous severe case of shingles, she took a bad fall in June '16. Resulting in a fracture left humous (above the elbow). The tough old bird endured 4 days in the hospital and corrective surgery. Now with 2 limbs down, she (& the family) were faced with recovery care. Upon being discharged from the hospital she was placed in a recovery unit in West Hartford due to a lack of availability elsewhere. This facility at best was a nightmare. The family quickly jumped on board and found an opening at Caleb Hitchcock Health Care Center, 2 days later. Oh my! What a difference. Caleb was quickly coined, The Country Club for Care. The facility is up-to-date, well managed, and not lacking any amenities for elderly post-operative rehabilitation; Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT). Private rooms with bathrooms and a home like appeal. The public areas are designed to allow residents plenty of activities at every level of mobile ability and skill level. PT & OT were conveniently located in each unit and very well equipped. The staff warm, skilled, and open to any needs of the resident. Believe me, my Mutter-Schwiegersohn had plenty of unique needs and requests while there. Some very challenging, while others very humorous, but the staff (& family) never failed to meet her needs. After weeks of rehabilitation and most importantly occupational therapy, Oma successfully graduated her care. She was discharged this past week (Sept. '16), but not without Caleb follow-up and home evaluation. She came home with a walking device and other home modification were made for her to remain as safe as possible. Fingers crossed. Thanks Caleb & Staff for everything!

With this corona pandemic everyone is confined to their rooms. It's been since March since anyone has been allowed to come out. This is house arrest and these people have not had anything to do or anyone to talk to. Their rooms are not that big either. The facility has 2 entrances and only one is open most of the time. It is on New Britain Ave and it has 4 lanes of traffic. It is almost impossible for anyone trying to take a left. I am waiting for the day when someone gets killed trying to do this, especially the seniors who still drive. It was an idiotic decision to close the entrance on Newington Ave where there are fewer cars going up and down the road. Some of the security guards have a reputation of being very rude. Parking at the facility is a total nightmare because there is very little of it. If you do find a spot you have to walk very far to get into the building. Don't think that the administrator there will care a lot about your opinion or your problems with this facility or with the staff. The rent there is very expensive and I would suggest to look elsewhere. There are a lot of empty rooms there and now you know why.

West Hartford Rehab is now under new management, the inside is much more clean due to the renovations. Located in a quieter and safe area outside of Blue Back Square in the center of town on Loomis drive, this is a perfect area to go for a nice stroll around on the sidewalks if the weather allows it. The nurses working during the week Monday-Friday are wonderful, helpful, and take the time to sit with each family during a visit to give quality updates that are 100% honest on the behaviors and health of the person receiving treatment. On the other hand, I am not so satisfied with the staff on the weekends, not as experienced nurses gather at the front desk on the second floor to "shoot the breeze" and tend to administer slightly more medication in the afternoons to "tame behaviors" when they really may just be looking for a break. I have gone to visit at all times of the day, weekdays to the weekend. I have personally had to comment on the cleanliness of my Dad's clothes and standard hygiene. I can say with confidence that I am not impressed overall with the care BUT West Hartford Rehab is the only facility that had open space for my Dad when he needed to transfer, and they are able to provide him with the care he ultimately needs. They are able to handle heightened behaviors of lewy body and frontal temporal lobe dementia, unlike many other surrounding facilities that deem this as a liability...unfortunately the cost of healthcare here (depending on your diagnosis) can run up to $150,000/year unless you file for title 19 and receive medicaid!

He was sent to Trinity Hill Care Center for rehabilitation. Unfortunately, 2 days before Thanksgiving he was discharged. I say unfortunately because he should not have been discharged. I was told his discharge included a home health aid that would be visiting daily at his residence to assist him with his blood sugar, food etc. (He wasn't at all able to comprehend even how to check his own blood sugar). No home health professional came to my brothers home. Trinity apparently did NOT schedule this as part of his discharge, but it appears as sheduled on his discharge documents which I have. For 16 days he was alone at his residence, with no help. He could not even walk after 4-5 days. How does this happen? My sweet brother was found unconscious on December 12 and passed away on Christmas Eve. Low blood sugar caused irreparable brain damage. They have no idea how long he was lying unconscious before he was found. I spoke to the home health facility listed on the Trinity discharge docs and they have no record of a phone call, intake, referral, they have nothing from Trinity regarding my brother. They said to me they have no record at all of his name anywhere. This vital part of my brother's care apparently was never put in place. It could have saved him. Likely would have. What happened Trinity? Well I asked and: Trinity Admin named George promised to call me back 2 weeks ago,... nothing. Then again another promise to call me back 1 week ago. ....nothing. This is not care. This is apathy. And this is a dangerous facility.
