We were impressed enough to have my mother move there from Florida when she needed a smaller living space and available nursing care. It was not long before we came to understand that the saying "all that glitters is not gold" applies. Turned out to be a place that ostracized my mother from evening meal dining because one has to be "invited" to a table of people already grouped through friendships/familiarity. In the year or so my mom lived there, she felt like an outsider in the dining situation and ate all her all her meals in her apartment. She made friends with immediate neighbors but socially could not fit into the social network created by people living there before her arrival, even though she was a gregarious and fun loving person. And, the management was quite insensitive to the exclusion of my mom from the social cliques their facility had facilitated even after we complained about the situation. We were so sorry that we took great efforts and great expense to have her live there. Be careful if you are considering this place for any person you care about.

So the best thing about the McAuley is the community. Interesting people from diverse backgrounds who support one another and make life exciting again. Even the people you don't like -- age does not make us saintly -- are generalyl kind and helpful, forcing you to reciprocate in kind. The second best thing about McAuley is it's location, smack in the middle of West Hartford, minutes away from shopping, theater, restaurants, museums of every variety, etc. And if you don't drive anymore, the McAuley provides free transportation to medical appts. and very low cost rides to anywhere else you want to go. The food is great, the apartments charming, no what your decorating style, the programs are widely varied and generally excellent. and the staff is kindness itself. So don't wait till you hear the angels wings. If the house is becoming a burden, if you're bored out of your gourd because there's no one left to do things with, come to the McAuley and play with us. Make this, the last semester, the best it can be.

Being 86 this year, living alone with a bum foot from a previous severe case of shingles, she took a bad fall in June '16. Resulting in a fracture left humous (above the elbow). The tough old bird endured 4 days in the hospital and corrective surgery. Now with 2 limbs down, she (& the family) were faced with recovery care. Upon being discharged from the hospital she was placed in a recovery unit in West Hartford due to a lack of availability elsewhere. This facility at best was a nightmare. The family quickly jumped on board and found an opening at Caleb Hitchcock Health Care Center, 2 days later. Oh my! What a difference. Caleb was quickly coined, The Country Club for Care. The facility is up-to-date, well managed, and not lacking any amenities for elderly post-operative rehabilitation; Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT). Private rooms with bathrooms and a home like appeal. The public areas are designed to allow residents plenty of activities at every level of mobile ability and skill level. PT & OT were conveniently located in each unit and very well equipped. The staff warm, skilled, and open to any needs of the resident. Believe me, my Mutter-Schwiegersohn had plenty of unique needs and requests while there. Some very challenging, while others very humorous, but the staff (& family) never failed to meet her needs. After weeks of rehabilitation and most importantly occupational therapy, Oma successfully graduated her care. She was discharged this past week (Sept. '16), but not without Caleb follow-up and home evaluation. She came home with a walking device and other home modification were made for her to remain as safe as possible. Fingers crossed. Thanks Caleb & Staff for everything!

Duncaster Continuing Care Retirement Community has always been a top notch Graduated Living…read moreCommunity since its founding in 1984. Recognized and awarded throughout their 34+ years. This Community has recently provided us with two special and personal experiences. First, my mother-in-law enjoyed and when I say enjoyed, this is very understated, a recovery period in their on-site Caleb Hitchcock Health Center. This was followed by a bad fall in her own home, which required surgery and two+ months of ambulatory therapy. Second, our daughter was offered and accepted a position with the Community. I was able to spend two and half hours one evening during an earlier snow fall to "safely Uber" my daughter home after her shift. While there I was able to stroll and observe the Community first hand. In that time, I chatted with the most wonderful residents, diverse, each within their own level of life and ability. However ALL appeared happy and with a most impressive sense of close community and caring for one and other. My favorite component is the Aquatic Center. Top notch with scheduled low impact exercise classes, monitored open swim lanes, and a gradual ramp for aided aqua therapy. Not to put aside their adjacent Health and Wellness Center with fitness and movement classes for all. The dining facilities are NOT run of the mill either. Ranging for Casual formal dining, private spaces for residents to dine with visitors, and even door service. The menu was quite impressive offering a new menu everyday catering to all dietary needs and wellness, too. Now, entertainment. I happened upon an open auditorium with a large number of residents enjoying a live Piano, Violin, and Cello performance. I stood in the doorway mesmerized leaving the snowstorm behind. From there I wondered into their Library with an ample and diverse section of book stacks, warm well lit seating areas, and during the day a Librarian. In warmer, months the grounds are park like, the landscaping is beautiful and offers a number of pathways with spaces sit, enjoy nature, and let a little Vitamin D seep in. I'm only scratching the surface and I could go on, however, I close with this: I hope to be as fortunate one day as the Duncaster Residents to partake in such a well planned, maintained, and caring Community to help extend the enjoyment of our sunset.

An added reassurance is that they are accredited through the state and have received various awards. Duncaster has been in business for about 35 years and they've certainly earned their great reputation in the community. This is a facility I would highly recommend for anyone seeking to place their elder family into quality care with excellent healthcare professionals.

My mother, a vulnerable patient, has suffered significant financial loss and emotional distress under her supervision. While Kendra was supposed to be assisting with housing applications and DSS redeterminations, she instead gained access to my mother's online accounts and changed the passwords, locking her out. During this time, over $400 in food stamp benefits were wiped out. When confronted with the missing funds and the fact that a promised housing application for West Hartford was never filed, Kendra became hostile and unprofessional. To matters worse, the local management (Darcy, Kendra's Supervisor and Joy the receptionist) has been dismissive of these serious fraud allegations, even attempting to "settle" the theft of $400 in essential benefits with a $50 gift card. A police report has been filed. If you have a loved one here, monitor their accounts closely and do not allow this individual access to sensitive passwords or personal identification documents. The way they change case managers and therapists here is like changing underwear. They are not stable for their clients and from what I have seen in other reviews, they don't take the mental health needs of the clients here seriously either. Better yet, find another facility, one who delivers proficient customer service, does not treat your mental health like a joke or just a paycheck for them, and one who won't continue to cancel your appointments last minute with a response time of up to 50 damn years.
