Pacific Coast Hardscapes - Day 2 - applying 6" road base.

Pacific Coast Hardscapes

(17 reviews)

I decided to repave my drive, which, like most driveways in Lake San Marcos, had become cracked due…read moreto the expansion of the underlying clay soil. The original driveway was 3" thick, poured directly on clay soil with no road base. I received 3 bids from paving contractors for paving 800 sq feet of driveway and adjacent sidewalk. The first two bids were both 28K+, and the third and winning bid of 14.5K was from Pacific Coast Hardscapes. I was not necessarily interested in only price, but also wanted a quality installation that would not develop problems down the road from cutting corners. With Pacific Coast Hardscapes, I dealt directly with Matt Orne, one of the owners, who had 20+ years of experience in hardscaping and was also a local Lake San Marcos resident. He impressed me with his knowledge and experience across many jobs in the LSM area, and his desire to deliver a quality installation. I prefer dealing directly with an owner, rather than a salesman who usually has less detailed knowledge of installation techniques. I was surprised to hear the job could be completed in only 3 days! The pavers selected were Angelus Pavers, Courtyard Combo Dark Grey - Copper - Charcoal mixture. Edging was Charcoal. Angelus is a local San Diego company that manufactures paving stones and is known for their consistent color and finish. Also, being local, they offered lower pricing on paving stones than their competitors, who had additional shipping costs from other manufacturing locations and sold through hardscape distributors. On Day 1, all concrete was demoed, and the clay soil beneath the driveway was removed. It was surprising how wet and sticky the clay soil was beneath the driveway. I decided to go with a somewhat thicker-than-normal road base of 6" because of the condition of the underlying soil. On Day 2, a geotextile separation fabric was placed between the clay soil and the road base. This prevents the road base from becoming thinned by mixing with the underlying soil. The next 6" of road base was spread and screeded to a finished height of 3" below final grade, to allow for a setting base of sand and the thickness of the pavers. On Day 3, all pavers were laid. The edging of the driveway was almost 50' long from the garage door to the street, and had a 9" thick cement footing reinforced with 2 layers of #4 rebar. If the footing ever cracked due to expansive clay soil, the rebar would hold the edging in alignment and prevent disruption to the top pavers. The pavers were sanded with polymeric sand, which is misted to harden the polymers and lock the pavers together. There were 4 workers on site each of the 3 days of installation, in addition to the owner. All had been with Pacific Coast Hardscapes for several years, were highly skilled in all phases of the paver installation, and worked as a very efficient team, requiring no direction. They worked 12 hours each day, and on the first day, worked until 7:45 pm in the dark to complete all excavation of dirt so the site would be ready for road fill the following day. I appreciated their skill and the meticulous attention to detail they paid to their work. There were many extras included in this job that did not result in additional charges: 6" road base, rather than the more typical 4", re-routing of some irrigation lines to accommodate the fact that the original driveway was widened by an additional 2 feet, and pouring extra deep footings 9" concrete footings on the driveway edges. The only remaining task is to have the driveway sealed, which will be done in a few days once it dries completely. I was very happy with the end result and feel the upgraded driveway added significant value to my home. For those considering hardscape projects for their home, Pacific Coast Hardscapes has my highest recommendation.

Kyle and Robert were awesome to work with and their crew really seemed to know what they were doing! It's not always easy to find a good contractor, but you can't go wrong hiring these guys. I'd work with them again, anytime!

I had done 3 artificial turf areas in my yard (800, 2600 and 650 sqft) and every time I compared…read moreprice and quality of the turf, I came back to Ruby Turf Direct. Lisa has been very helpful to make the buying process easier. When I was in the market for the first time, it is so confusing what to choose (turf, sand, nail, glue) as well as the ground prep processes. And she helped me through it, I got my potting green done with helps from a hired handy man and the lawn holds so well which gave me the courage to do the 2600 sq back yard. We removed out 5" of dirt, added 2" of road base class II, 1" of gold DG, and compacted layer by layer. I used the minivan to haul the turf on the roof; 20x15 was heavy but durable , but one roll I cut was 35 x15 that's really my upper limit to haul and roll in to my back yard. (Has to really simulate: the direction of the turf carpet that Lisa make the roll is critical to the rest of handling, and then the orientation of the turf loading on my car, and the way I back into drive way and where to drop/move it - you need to have a plan). It's a good challenge to figure out by DIY home owners. It's a time consuming project but it's achievable. Important tips for DIY: Because my lawn has some slope from the wall, what bothered me was the wrinkle in the Memory 50 carpet. I tried to nail the center line and stretch by carpet knee kicker, it helped somewhat but I still see the bothering wrinkles. However, the magic of the Aug- Sep heat-cold cycle likely annealed the carpet to adapt my ground, and everything just followed natural law to settle in. I can't see wrinkle now, praise Lord! If you know how hard to deal with the wrinkle in the uneven ground, I am just very thankful that all things get beautiful in His time.

We highly recommend Ruby Turf. We recently purchased 2000 sq feet of artificial turf. We went with…read morenatural 70. They have several options meeting all needs with very competitive pricing. They also provide nails and infill to complete the project. Above all, Lisa was wonderful. She is extremely helpful, honest and knowledgeable. It is very convenient to communicate with her and she tries hard to make the customer happy.
