Whilst waiting for my cuppa soup, I grabbed one of the only seats available and took it all in. Stanley's was absolutely packed; there were ladies who lunch, businessmen in suits, grandmas enjoying a cuppa and a hipster teen out with his mother. It struck me that this is the kind of place where everyone feels comfortable. The interior is simple, clean and fuss free with ceiling to floor windows that make it beautifully light inside (even when it is miserable outside). Of course, there are also exposed light features but in this case they work brilliantly with the fresh, white interior. Within 10minutes my takeaway soup had arrived with the bag of cheesy goodness and boy, was I excited. When I got home, I transferred the piping hot soup to a bowl and noticed that they had served it with fresh sage and a drizzle of cream. The little things really can a difference. The soup smelt absolutely devine and tasted equally as good; thick and hearty with a rich tomato flavour. Combined with the cheesy toast this was most definitely a substantial lunch. It all arrived in no time and everything was divine. The coffee was creamy and hot, the loaf had been toasted to just the right temperature. The smoothie was delicious and nutritious, and proved a purrfick 'foil' for the magnificent grill. I really like how there is a little self contained box on each table with the (clean, laminated) menu, sanitiser, salt, pepper, sugar and a plastic flower. Bacon was crispy but not overcooked and there was enought to have a good chunk with every delicious fork full. If I had any gripe it was only a small one & was with the avocado. Was borderline raw but they can be hard to gauge especially when cooking en volume and under the gun so no points lost there. Will be back here for sure. The list on the menu deserves a good trial & if my first experiance is emulated I am sure this will be good eats!

Thankfully the new owners have kept things top notch. They did mix up the menu a little bit, but just offered a new range of great food. They have a regular $10 special salad for lunch, which is great value. In winter they offer a delicious kumara and bacon soup - perfect for a drizzly, cold winter's day. They use Allpress coffee and most of the baristas do a good job. I also try to keep my diet "paleo" so the paleo breakfast for $17 is a great way of having brunch but keeping healthy. Not quite as delicious as an Eggs Benedict, but much better for the waistline.

(Sadly, probably due to the fact that I do not hang out in Kingsland as often as I would like). We arrived at The Fridge around 2.30pm on a Saturday. We decided on a hot drink and a sweet cake. [Side note: I had previously read every review of The Fridge online, so thought it would be interesting to go for afternoon tea instead of breakfast/brunch as this is what most of the reviewers had wrote about]. Service was friendly when we walked in. Not overly attentive, but not distant either. The first thing you notice is the large cabinet by the till - except when we arrived, there was very little food left. The cabinet looked tired and unorganised. My Mum pointed out that as the food dwindles throughout the day, they should still make sure the rest of it looks good. I totally agreed. Nothing looked highly appealing, except for a few sweet cakes. We ordered a an extra hot, trim flat white ($4), an extra hot, trim hot chocolate ($4.50) and a Sticky Date Pudding Cake served warm with cream ($5.50). We also bought two chocolate chip cookies ($3.50 each), to take away. Both drinks were perfect - extra hot and strong! I do find at most cafes that there will be a 50/50 chance whether they will make it extra hot or not. Usually I just take it back if it is not hot enough. If you do come to The Fridge, I recommend ordering a hot chocolate as it is sweet and comes with marshmallows and a chocolate fish! One of the few places in Auckland that gives you both! However, the highlight of our afternoon tea was definitely the Sticky Date Pudding Cake! It was delicious! It was warm the whole way through, very moist and had a good serving of dates inside the cake. It was just like eating the real dessert! As for the décor, well it was a bit too casual and alternative for my liking. The Fridge has many different seating areas with odd chairs. Personally, I think it is a bit of a waste of space. Overall, The Fridge had great coffee and sweet treats. Just a shame about the décor and funny seating... May go back to try one of their pies - I have heard they are pretty good!
