I had a small list of things, five in total in order of priority, that I wanted the handy man to do…read morein the three hour minimum that this guy charges. If he wasn't able to do all of them then I would have had him come back to finish up and do a couple of other small things that I would add to the list. The original list: 1) Take down the current fixture and put up a new ceiling fan with a remote in the guest room. 2) Tighten up the connectors under the kitchen sink in order to prevent a leak that's been there for a while. 3) Put up the new smoke detectors that I purchased to replace my 12-year-old units. 4) Install two new electrical plates that have USB ports in my kitchen. 5) Fix 2 sticky gates that drag on one side. He started at the sink and took a look underneath. I showed the area that the leak was and the paper that I had placed under it that had been soaked and since dried out. He filled the sink twice and ran the garbage disposal to empty the water out both times. He got up after looking under it again and said there wasn't anything he could do because he couldn't recreate the problem. Okay, so that took 5 minutes and he moved on to the bedroom ceiling fan. He pulled down the original fixture in the guest room and started to put up the new fan with the remote. Over an hour later he came out holding the remote receiver and handed it to me and said "it doesn't work. You'll have to order a new one". He didn't put the old fixture back up, and he left the pieces to both all over the floor and bed then asked me where the new smoke detectors were. I gave him the boxes, he looked them over and said "I can't put these up because they aren't hardwired and if I do, it will void your homeowners insurance". He then moved on to the electrical faceplates with the usb ports in them and took about 20 minutes to install these. We were coming up on the two hour mark and he gathered his things and said that's all I can do today. We agreed that I would only pay him for two hours instead of the minimum of three. I wrote him a check for $160 and he left. My assumption is always that people that do these things for living know more about the tasks than I do. But his behavior in my instincts told me to check on the things that he told me about the receiver and the smoke detectors. Both of those statements turned out to be incorrect, and I had the fan installed by another electrician shortly there after, it works just fine. Also, and just as important, I called my homeowners insurance agent and checked on his statement regarding the smoke detectors. This also turned out to be false as I have an in-home sprinkler system, and even if I did not, the agent told me that it wouldn't matter what kind of smoke detectors I had just as long as I had them installed, and in working condition at all times. Beyond that, the insurance people are fine with whatever I put up, so I also had those installed and tested and all is in working in order As it should be. So my take on this guy and his business is understandably not good. I don't like giving a bad review but for someone who charges $80 an hour my old neighbor down the street who doesn't know that much could probably have done a better job. I guess the moral of the story is, always hire a licensed electrician or plumber, and not a handyman. And, for the things you think a handyman should be able to handle, it's best to get a good reference from someone else first or at least talk to somebody who knows the person you're about to hire. That way you won't be left with more work than you actually started out with.
