I'm going to start my review with mentioning the 172nd ave entrance is now closed and has become a housing development so to access this location you need to be at the 142nd side, when we visited lots of construction was going on at the bottom for a new community being built but you couldn't tell once you hit the parking lot. The trails are nice and spacious not as big as Talbert but just as nice. The view of Mt.Hood is lovely from here on a nice day and the ADA accessibly picnic area is right smack in the middle of these views it would make a great bbq/picnic area in the warmer months. No dogs allowed for nature's sake but there is a dog park up the block.

This is one of several Metro parks and natural areas scattered around the greater Portland Metropolitan area. Many are hard to find without a map. Most have short loop trails and several, such as Scouters Mountain are on ancient cinder cones or buttes east of Portland. To get the most of these parks, walk slowly and observe your surroundings. Look and listen for birds, notice the different types and sizes of trees and leaves, look for flowers, wildlife or wildlife signs (there is a burrow entrance not far from the bench with lichen sculpture. Our walk in October enabled us to see the fall colors and compete to see who could find the biggest or smallest Big Leaf Maple leaf--some are huge. On top of the mountain is a covered pavilion and restrooms with picnic tables that is good for groups. Nearby Hogan Natural Area has a more challenging loop trail that goes through a dense forest of ferns, conifers, big leaf maples and other trees.

Well maintained park. We took a Boomer trail which circles around the extinct lava dome. It was a pleasant hike despite the strong winds and swinging trees (scary!). You might see a deer (based on the picture on the entrance information board), but we haven't seen any animals. There are art benches here too. If I lived in the area I would have definitely frequented this park.

Beautiful park I loved the easy hike and the views of Mt Hood just wish I could bring my doggies haha but I will definitely be back to hike it again

It feels like stepping into a quiet, wooded glade that happens to be full of incredible plant collections (and a few curious surprises). It has a peaceful, almost secret-garden quality that makes it feel worlds away from the rest of the city, even though it's just a short drive out. The paths are easy to navigate, it's a great spot for kids with the dedicated children's garden near the Claybourne entrance, and it's simply a lovely place to slow down for an hour or two. The Upper Garden's Aerial Tree Walk is a highlight, giving you a totally different vantage point up among the trees, and is fully accessible. From there, the trails wind down into the lower garden along the creek, past the historic Leach manor house and the stone cabin the Leaches built themselves. The terrazzo floor inside is a beautiful detail worth seeking out. The pollinator garden and the native plant collections are clearly tended with real care, and there's always something in bloom no matter the season. Given the funding challenges the garden has faced recently, I'd also encourage anyone visiting to consider a membership or donation -- it's a genuinely special place and well worth supporting. Highly recommend a visit.

They had some kid specific activities such as pinecone collecting and a scavenger hunt which was nice to keep the kid in our group engaged. It was easy for us to find parking in their lot and admission for adults was $8, 4 and under was free.

Important to note that it is a 'nature park' and not a 'city park' which means fewer amenities (no playgrounds and only one restroom in the main parking lot at the Mather Road entrance) and most importantly, no pets or bikes. There are rules for a reason. There are multiple trails that connect to various neighborhoods and loop up to a Summit Trail, however we didn't get any views from the summit. I've started a hike from the Mather Road entrance and it is all up hill for the first stretch. Our most recent experience was better when we parked part way up the hill and started our hike off of SE Talbert Street to connect to the Park Loop Trail. Unfortunately, the posted signs about poison oak were accurate and the trails were covered in poison oak. And while the trails were easy to navigate, the plants are overgrown and crossing the path, so it is hard to avoid contact. I recommend a change of clothes and/or wet wipes to avoid getting poison oak from your stroll. The area is a nice option on hot or rainy days due to the canopy of trees, but not recommended for young children or those with mobility issues. It is a beautiful short hike and you feel away from it all, even though you are close to the city. The restroom was clean and there is shelter that can be rented for events.

Gorgeous neighborhood park!…read more Beautiful hiking trail with a nice large free parking lot!!! The trails are well marked and I got cell phone service while I was on the trail. There are many trails to choose from. I choose to do the park loop, west ridge, and summit and it was a nice little loop that took about an hour or so. It had snowed the morning of, so the trails were muddy so I would definitely recommend hiking boots. I would definitely come back!
