Had a great time at Scotty's motel a couple weeks ago. The new owners are actively refurbishing the rooms and grounds, and have what appears to be a very cool plan for the place. Check-in was a breeze, the owners are very accommodating. As we were very late booking, we got one of the unrenovated rooms, which yes, is dated, but they were clean. And we were barely in the room at all. Just showered and slept, as Munising is all about being outside. The rest of the motel grounds are super chill, with plenty of space to spread out outside, a cool dog, and interesting folks to chat with. The best part is that it's walking distance, a couple blocks, to the brew pubs and such in downtown Munising, so was the perfect location. Looking forward to seeing the changes in store for the place. Best of luck to the new owners! read more

On the exterior, this place is trapped in a time warp. The room I stayed in was kind of dark and depressing, not to mention that I had trouble sleeping due to the fact that my room was next to the ice machine room and I could hear it running when I was trying to get to sleep. You also couldn't get any fresh air in the room because there were no screens on the door or windows. I did not like this place, although the owners seemed like very nice people. It is reasonably priced, but as they say, you pay for what you get. read more

NEW OWNERSHIP, NEW RENOVATIONS, SAME VINTAGE CHARM. Memories aren't made at the Holiday Inn they're made at Scotty's Motel. This place is a legend amongst those who make the voyage to Munising, Michigan year after year for the variety of outdoor sites and activities. After being under the same ownership for decades, suffering a fire, and being purchased by a lovely couple on a mission - Scotty's is being given some much needed TLC and returned to it's former glory. Although some elements of this 50s/60s time capsule are being removed (think old carpet, crumbling plaster) the staples that bring the old school vintage charm are being protected, salvaged and honored by Tom, his wife, and their handsome little Bull Terrier. The owners are fabulous hosts, one of the best features of a motel vs a hotel - you make friends! They had an extra key for us, extra towels and an extra mini-fridge waiting for us based on the length of our stay and the fact that many restaurants are closed this time of year. We were offered an outdoor fire ring as well as access to a little greenhouse for a BOYB Happy Hour which was INCREDIBLE. We stayed up late playing board games and enjoyed the layout and space of the motel generally. The rooms have been given some serious love (still in progress for some rooms). The renovated rooms are CLEAN, SAFE, well-stocked with the necessities, and extremely comfortable. There will be no other place we stay in Munising. Scotty's or BUST. We spent our 44th wedding anniversary here and it could not have been better. Spending time in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula was awesome. Took the boat ride at Pictured Rocks. The hotel had updated rooms and the charm of a small town, locally owned motel. Kayla was our point person and from the time we booked through check in went out of her way to make our time special. We would recommend this motel to anyone visiting the area that are interested in supporting local MI businesses. Now this is a divey motel done right! Old school neon sign, charmingly retro during the day, gloriously sleazy and ominous at night, real room keys and not cards, $40 a night with cable, including HBO and wifi... the list goes on and I'm glad I got a verb in there cause my high school English teacher wouldn't like how that "sentence" started. I rolled into Munising dog tired, wondering if I should've called it a day in Marquette. Scotty's Motel to the rescue! It was clean and quiet with no bedbugs or Norman Bates to be found. The sweet old lady behind the front desk and the guy staying in the room next to me both got openly judgmental about me being from Detroit, but I just silently said "yea, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man", and sought to change their attitude by being a completely non-troublesome overnight lodger. The shower was much needed and I appreciated the bottle opener on the wall next to it, though my alcoholism is not currently in active mode. After my shower I hit up the drive thru at the Hardee's down the block, just before closing time, and good thing, too, cause I was famished. I settled in to watch some of the Winnipeg Jets playing that stupid Vegas expansion team, browsed the internet and fired off a few texts. The wifi was a welcome relief from the cellphone dead zone that I found the entire U. P. to be. The air conditioner worked fine, and they had an heavy duty old metal fan as back up, too. Scotty's is the real deal - an old mom and pop motel largely unaffected by the passage of time. I could totally see myself staying there again. read more

I stayed here in the 80's. An older woman, i presume was mrs scotty was running it. Great woman, wonderful petsonality. In front was this beautiful flower garden. Rate was really cheap When i got into the room i noticed one of the lamp shades had been scotched taped to keep it together. Stayed a few nights on my travel through the up. It was a great experience. I imagine this was what it was like traveling in the 50's. read more

We were pleasantly surprised by this room. At $41.44 (tax included) for a big, spacious room with two queen beds, fridge, microwave, tv, desk, recliner, and a private carport, we thought this was a bargain. Most of the rooms are a few bucks cheaper, and have one double bed. We thought we were upping the rate for a few more inches of bed space, but got quite a bit more. If you're like me and prefer to spend your money on experiences (and not fancy accommodations), I think you'll be quite comfortable using Scotty's Motel as a place to sleep for a night or two. read more

Let's be honest. This is not a 5 star hotel with an ocean view. It is, however, a clean no frills place to crash for the night after a long drive. My bed was clean, the room was small, the Wi-Fi worked, and so did the TV. For $40.00, it was perfectly fine. I would stay here again and recommend it! read more

Scotty's Motel highly exceeded our expectations. By far the cleanest Motel I have ever stayed at. The beds were very comfortable. The owners are very friendly and provided us numerous recommendations for sites and food in the area. Recommendations were all Home Runs. My annual road trips up-north always consist of some wild-card combination of motels and campsites. A campsite is a campsite but the differences between up-north motels can be as evident as night and day. The distinction is usually set by a few things: location, ownership and price. As the old saying goes, you get for what you pay for. At Scotty's Motel, you definitely get what you pay for! Set a few blocks back from the water and the main streets, Scotty's sits right on the border of the residential area of Munising. $41.44 (including tax) per night will get you a bare-bones room with an assigned parking spot. The weekend we were there, Scotty had a full house -- so full that one night, someone stole our parking spot and we had to park elsewhere. The room, itself, featured a queen sized bed, a pull out couch, a full bath, microwave, mini-fridge and a tiny tv (with cable though). The bed was on the harder side, but it beats the hard ground we experienced during camping. The blankets on the bed were kind of gross, we didn't use them at all. The bathroom definitely reveals the age of the hotel...dear old Scotty's Motel seems very circa 1963. The AC unit worked, but not that well. The room was not super clean but clean enough. However, there was a musty smell in the room that was not pleasant at all. We didn't complain...hey, for $41 some a night, who's actually going to complain? Another funny thing about the place was that there are no phones in the rooms, but Scotty's invites you to make short, local calls in the office if you would like. That is, if you still remember how to use landlines. I did like Scotty's because it gave me the chance to afford to do the things I wanted to do up-north. It wasn't my favorite, I'm not sure if I'll return but it was just fine for what it was. I just was happy that instead of spending money on lodging, I was able to spend my pennies buying up yummy pasties and smoked fish. Just hopefully, they will work on that musty smell for next time. So my stay at Scotty's wasn't great. But honestly, I wasn't expecting it to be. I got an "unrenovated" room, which they warned me about beforehand, and it was cheaper. It was clearly, very much so, unrenovated. Not necessarily dirty, but straight out of 1980, and extremely, let's say...well used. Yes, you'll probably have a strong urge to avoid walking around in bare feet. I cringed a bit stepping onto the shower floor. That said, the room wasn't really gross. It seemed to be cleaned. There were no hairs that I saw, and I didn't notice any excess dust. The staff was nice enough, I was on a bike trip and crashed, and they offered me some peroxide and ice for my wounds. So if you're looking for a cheap motel in Munising, Scotty's fits the bill. But maybe spring for the renovated room. Hopefully they are extensively renovated. read more

Classic motel in convenient location. The price was great and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Stayed in one of the new rooms and was glad to have a mini fridge with freezer. Can walk into town/boat dock and nearby restaurants and grocery store! read more

All other lodging options were booked up so I was excited to find a vacancy at Scotty's. I couldn't believe the price quoted, just over$40. I didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. Quiet, quaint motel with very personable owners. The only complaint I would make is to take care of the cobwebs and spiders on the porch areas. Would stay at again! read more
