The community is open-hearted and the education and social setting has allowed our daughter to transform her anxiety into confidence and joy. Simply put, she LOVES school and begs me to let her stay as long as possible in aftercare. The way the administration has reinvented in-person learning during the pandemic is nothing short of inspirational. The outdoor classrooms are located on 6-acre, wooded campus that is buzzing with excitement, music and laughter. As an adult what I've discovered in my career (and life) is that I'm happiest during moments of being creative. This being said, the most significant thing I've witnessed in our daughter's journey at Waldorf is a blossoming of her inherent creativity which translates into more moments of happiness. As a mother I couldn't want anything more for my child. If you're looking for a heart-centered school that will nurture child's hunger to learn, grow and be be happy, I strongly encourage you to schedule a tour and whiteness the beauty of this education and school!

I see it in my kids every day. (ok, almost every day. They're still humans! :)) But they really do learn in a much more varied 'landscape' of people, of cultures, family structures and points of view and they are better for it. Plus they are getting all the tools for great conflict management skills, a key predictor of happiness. And that's the icing on the cake of solid academics. My kids are learning, and most importantly, they are happy and confident, they feel loved and like they "belong" at their school. (They beg me to stay at aftercare to play with their friends!)

However, as a psychologist, I also knew that I wanted a school that had a focus on social-emotional development. I feel so lucky to have found the Friends School for my son. They sincerely practice what they preach. My son has ADHD, and the teachers were exceptional in identifying his needs, using targeted strategies to assist him, and communicating with me about ways to support him. Despite his challenges, they never lost sight of his unique strengths. Now that he is in first grade, he is thriving. And, the beauty of it is, because it's a small school, his current teachers already have some familiarity with him and have been able to give me great feedback about his improvement. The focus on ensuring that kids are well-rounded citizens is also a real asset for FSA. My son is courteous, kind, and socially aware. He talks about helping the homeless, eating healthy foods, and caring for the environment. He gets adequate exercise and sunlight during the school day (which research shows is linked to greater energy and concentration). He is learning conflict management skills, mindfulness, empathy, and how to be a good member of a team. As someone who works with business leaders, I know that these lessons will be invaluable in his life. I once told the headmaster that he radiates warmth. His demeanor is so kind, upbeat, and positive - he never looks like he's going through the motions. I believe that he sets a great tone for the rest of the school. I can't rave enough about FSA. I'm so lucky that we found it!

But, instead it was a nightmare I literally hated to come in on those 2 days. Most of the staff had a great attitude towards me & was welcoming when I came in but then there was Maria. She tried to seem like she was so nice but she was so rude to me!!!!! She wouldn't even let me interact with the children in the "space" I was provided. Because she was so CONTROLLING & not sure for herself. The whole school knew that she ran multiple workers away from this daycare because of her controlling behavior. Ms. Jeanie told me don't let her run me away & honestly that kind of scared me because I was thinking like what did I get myself into! Catrina Knight let it all happen. She told me out of her mouth that she had to give Maria a year leave in the past because of this kind of behavior. Which is really unprofessional to tell a new employee. She tried to make me stay in a work environment where I didn't feel comfortable or welcomed. Her father Charles tried to give me this speech about how to overcome the disrespect basically. But, it didn't work for me at all. Then, don't get me started on how small & unsafe this place is for the children. During nap time all of the children in the whole daycare sleeps in the hallway that's so unsanitary & weird to me. And not to mention that she didn't pay me for those days I worked which was to be $19 a hour. So when I resigned a couple days after I reached out to her about the process of me to get paid. She ignored me because she was out of town living her best life. But then she replied she asked me for a mailing address for my check which she received. Then I waited a few more days to see if it would be in the mailbox but it wasn't so I reached out to her again. Then in her words she said "The check will be sent 30 days after your resignation date since we did not receive ample notice. The training check will be received by Aug. 4." So, I waited again at this point I'm being very patient with her. It's August 11th & still haven't received a check!!!!! She will not reply to me & it's very inconsiderate. But the moral of the story is don't work here or send your child here.

Their small outdoor space faces the coffee shop so I see the kids and teachers outside often. The teachers are almost always on their phones. Recently I saw a toddler crying, trying to get the teacher's attention. She did finally get off her phone but I didn't see her tending to the child up to the point I walked inside the coffee shop. When I came back out the lady looked my way, but she still stayed on her phone all the while I got into the car to leave. I will say the other two teachers were appearing to interact with some of the other children, but the other lady couldn't look away from her phone. As I stated, often both teachers are glued to their phones every time I come. Was surprised this was a Reggio Emilia school, as what I've observed doesn't fall in line with its philosophy. If this were just a daycare I guess it wouldn't bother me as much since these specialized early childhood schools often command a much higher cost to parents. The expectation is the children get the benefits of experienced, dedicated teachers, not just whomever they can get as is the case in most daycares. As the mom of a toddler, I was especially bothered seeing the la k of response to the children crying. I'm grateful that we have been able to avoid daycare up to this point since these are my exact concerns with these places. The owners/directors should definitely try to implement some rules around phones, so caretakers will be more engaged, since we all know everyone is addicted to their phone. This is a reasonable request for most jobs, particularly when your job is to be present and responsive to young learners. Ok, stepping off my soapbox now.
