Saturday evening: What to do? Are you an Anglophile? Were you born between 1935 and 1993? Then go to the pub: Large Booths, broken up into individually cozy themed areas that effectively give the illusion that you are in a small local public house. I sat at the large bar area faintly lighted by a beautiful chandelier. There's also a patio area for good weather, and TV's throughout, but, typical of any establishment in Canada, all on the same hockey game. Friendly, efficient service at the bar soon had a remarkably expensive Guinness $10 CAD in front of me. Perhaps punishment for ordering Irish beer? Pain continued after the Saturday night, 7oz sirloin steak "special" at $14.00 arrived. Ordered medium rare, it was cooked perfectly, but "sirloin" covers a wide spectrum of steak quality. The Scotsman's must be at the extreme lowest end. TOUGH AND FLAVORLESS as shoe leather!!! My side of sautéed vegetables was a careless combination: Huge slices of green and red peppers surrounding a raw carrot. Caesar salad arrived with a lemon wedge? Dressing? I'll return, but not for the food.

Garbage in my basket of chicken wings

I got served GARBAGE in my food and the server wasn't even apologetic. This photo is from Sept 4th 2019 so this review is a long time coming (lost my phone shortly after and was going through the cloud and saw this). The server was horrible from the start (I have had her "serve" me before that summer on the patio and she's disengaged and standoffish). Usually when I go we have 2 truly magnificent servers we regularly get service from (that's why this review gets 2 stars). After 2 experiences with this server and having GARBAGE served to me in my food I will not return. She was unapologetic and upset that we had notified our regular server about the garbage (our "server" was no where to be found after she dropped off the food). The "server" dropped off the new wings without so much of a pause in her step. Yup you bet she charged us for the wings too.

This place is kind of interesting tucked away in the corner of a strip mall in Kincora. I would have never gone to this place if one of my friends didn't go there often. Boy, was I happy they suggested it. The place is extremely large and has tons of seating, both booth and table. The ceilings are high which means you don't have that cramped, caved-in feeling. The bar is conveniently located so that it's never too far of a walk. The prices at Scotsman's Well are pretty much what I expected. It's the typical pub prices for food and drinks, but with specials on different nights. I wouldn't say that it was a super awesome deal, but I also wouldn't go as far as to say we were being ripped off. It was just right. Another great thing about this place is the pool tables. They have a couple so that a few different groups can enjoy a game at the same time. There are TV's around the place playing whichever sports game is on at the time. I never really care, but it's nice to have something to direct your attention to when there's a lull in the conversation. If this place weren't so far away from me and everywhere I usually go, I think it could become a favourite new pub. Sadly, it's a little too much in the boonies for me to enjoy on a regular basis.

Scottish Mussels with garlic, white wine, butter, rose sauce, sourdough crostinis

Review #2 of Yelp's 30 Day Challenge 2012. Food: 2/5 Service: 1/5 Ambiance: 3/5 Overall experience: 2/5 (1- Terrible; 3- decent; 5- Fantastic) Scotsman's Well Pub is like any other European-esque watering hole you will find in Calgary. I thought the place was drab, but it was still bustling as people sipped on their beers whilst watching sports highlights or playing pool in the back corner. The bar is very spacious and can accommodate for large group parties. Their domestic and premium draft beer selection is what you would typically find at a bar and is fairly pricey at about $6.50 for a pint. One highlight is that they have drink specials everyday with happy hour pricing all night long. The menu consists of your typical pub fair such as nachos and wings; sandwiches and pastas at around $15/dish; entrees like steak and ribs; and expensive thick crust pizzas starting at ~$12 for an 8inch. I do appreciate their "Chef's Feature" section with homemade feature dishes. I ordered their: - Scottish Mussels starter with garlic, white wine, butter, rose sauce, and sourdough crostinis ($12). There were a lot of mussels, but they were fairly small, slightly overcooked and grimy. The sauce was really salty and the crostinis were rock solid. - My friend ordered their 7oz Sirloin ($16) which came with a choice of two sides (soup, salad, fries, mashed potatoes, or vegetables). There was a mound of mashed potatoes, but the accompanying cream of chicken soup was so watered down it was like drinking coffee creamer. We both found his steak to be mediocre. - For something filling, I suggest a burger ($12.50-$15) which comes with a thick patty or a large pizza to share with a few people. If you're a real meat-lover I recommend getting the "Lover of Meat" pizza ($15.50/8in ; $23/10in ; $30/13in) which is a Chicago deep dish styled pizza with a thick layer of Salami, Pepperoni, bacon, spicy beef, sausage, ham. One slice is a meal in itself! - Served in a skillet, the poutine is good with crispy fries and tons of melted cheese. The service was TERRIBLE which is mostly why I give this place a 1 star. I don't know if our waitress was new or just rude in general, but when she went to set down a beer, she splashed some of it onto a guest in our group. She didn't even say sorry; she just quickly ran off and didn't come back for another 15 minutes. Our water glasses were empty and our waitress was MIA for an hour before she took our dishes away. All in all, nothing stands out about Scotsman's Well Pub. It's one of those local pubs where you would go to get a casual beer because there is nothing else around.

As far as pub food goes....the meatloaf here is exceptional! Puts moms to shame, sorry mom. I've yet to experience anything else on the menu but judging from what I've tasted so far....can't go wrong!
