Cannon Cemetery

Cannon Cemetery

This little cemetery is located about 5 miles from the town of Van Alstyne, TX on HWY 121. You will…read morefind it on the right side on a little hill. It was once beautiful and well kept. A few of my Miller ancestors are buried by the flagpole, and a few in the back section. A handful of other relatives (women who married the Millers) are scattered about. I read that there used to be a fence surrounding the property, but was torn down. Someone else also said that a few of the infant tombstones were destroyed during this process. I'm glad my ancestors' plots are still undisturbed. Makes me sad that my 3rd great-grandfather, and his children (including my 2nd great-grandfather and his wife and son) are resting in a plot of land that nobody seems to care about, and construction seems to ruin. There is a little chapel towards the side, and every time I walk in there, you see items that care less children have left behind: Bibles, toys, shoes. Toward the front is a giant oak tree, and underneath it are a few wooden tombstones that belonged to slave graves. The grounds are unkept at times, and I'm always scared that giants snakes, or a wild bobcat will be wandering about. The town of Van Alstyne really needs to take a portion of it's money that they spend on football (a two million high school football stadium...really!) and fix up these old country cemeteries. I'm sure someone comes every once in a while to mow the grass, but so much more could be done to take care of this place.

Lone Star Cremation

I highly recommend this company, as their price is about 1/4 the price of a funeral home cremation…read more Their were prompt even though they had to come to Granbury to pick up for transportation to their facility in the middle of the night. I was a bit taken aback when a hearse arrived with two gentlemen who said they worked for a funeral home came to the door; then they quickly told they do pick ups for Lone Star. They were kind, polite and considerate. After I was notified, I drove to their facility to pick up my husbands ashes, and received the death certificates. They had also notified Social Security about the change in status, and I received SSA without any change in schedule. I highly recommend this company. I was able to make all the arrangements over the internet and pay with a credit card.

I let them handle my wife's cremation recently. I had to repeatedly send the request for a death…read morecertificate because they kept saying they didn't get it. All I did was forward the previous emails to them and they finally got it. They dragged out the process so I have to wait 10-14 days longer than I should have to get the death certificates. They didn't guarantee a specific date, but their estimate of 7-10 days turned into two weeks. When I went to pick up my wife's ashes she was just in a paper bag on the floor with many others. Watching her haphazardly search through the bags on the floor was horrifying. I would not recommend their service to anyone.
