Good evening. in times of trouble and agonizing grief over an ugly separation and resulting divorce, one looks to God, immediate family, and friends for comfort and advice. However, when things get lopsided and the opposition has unlimited funds to fight you (right or wrong), i resorted to Google for legal help. Being a minister, among other professions, I believe that I am a pretty good judge of character, so when I came across Schweitzer Law Partners and called for an appointment, I felt good about Don Schweitzer. He genuinely was interested in my case, but warned me from the start that it was going to be a process and he promised to advise me about California Family Law and how the law could affect my case. He said he would guide me for my best interest whether I liked what he was saying or not. He originally introduced me to his partner Casey Marticorena who helped me with the first separation phase of my case. She was great, thank you Casey. Then Don and Stephanie Trabanino became my confidants and guiding force for over three more years while the opposition tried to out-lawyer and bury me with legal trickery. Don, Stephanie, and Paralegal Marlene Guzman were so helpful and didn't waste a minute of time while helping to protect me legally, and were very supportive of me emotionally. After five plus agonizing years the entire Schweitzer Law Partner's team was involved. After several Depositions, meetings in the "War Room", and mounds of discovery, with hours of phone calls we developed a plan to prove my case. Receptionist Faby Guzman was kind, always recognized my voice, and made sure I kept my appointments, and received my correspondence. Loxi Wyndle kept me on track with my Trust Account, and was so helpful and worked so hard to keep me on track without a hassle Don and Stephanie's legal advice was "right on". Unfortunately, California Family Law is not very sympathetic towards infidelity or emotional marital issues, even with children. All I wanted was to protect my 3 sons from the grief, and we did. In the end, I was satisfied with the outcome, and we proved my case to be a win emotionally and financially within the California Law. My case was settled out of court. But, I'll be back for help if needed. Otherwise, God will pass judgement when the day comes. Absolutely pathetic service. After you meet the first time with Donald your passed off to a staff attorney who is amazingly incompetent. So incompetent in fact that she is no longer with the firm. You will be nickel and dime to death. You will be charged for a legal secretary to do the work and then charged again for an attorney to review the legal secretary's work! They are extremely non communicative and if you call to follow up you are charged for every minute on the phone. Nickle and diming aside their work is inadequate and ignorant. I would not recommend this law firm. I met Donald one time and never saw him again. He assigned my case to a lower level attorney and never checked on it. They dragged on a very simple divorce and it cost me thousands of dollars for nickel and dime things. They also increased rates in the middle of my case that I did not agree to. Jessica Feng was horrible and made several mistakes and charged me for her and her assistant to redo them. She also charged ME for 'double checking' items that she had assigned to her assistant... Don is a likable guy but his firm has grown too large for him to have much involvement with the majority of clients. He assigns the real work to younger, lower tier attorneys. The one I was assigned couldn't structure or write a decent legal letter if her life depended on it. Her weak responses (including bad punctuation, sentence structure, and spelling) to opposing counsel were ineffective, if not embarrassing. I was forced to do her job for her on multiple occasions - only to be billed for her time for work that was never used. Her legal advice was often wrong. And she always seemed to be on vacation. When Don did occasionally show up for a call or a mediation, he was uninformed and obviously hadn't read the necessary documents - which really made me question how he justifies billing an outrageous $750/hour in Pasadena. All the strategies we used were developed by me - or our mediator - not the "experienced former prosecutor/family law attorney" who I was shocked to discover had very little to offer beyond a basic understanding of family law. In the end, I became tired of paying a second mortgage to this group every month (including totally unnecessary shipping and printing charges) while they failed to achieve anything they originally promised to do in my favor and in a timely manner. Things dragged on for nearly a year - and they insist on prepaying estimated fees, which magically hit the exact number each month. I spent about $80K to deal with a single RFO and it's still not resolved because they failed to follow through. Now I need to either find a competent attorney or just represent myself. I've been trying to get copies of a couple documents and bills for weeks now and they ignore my emails. That's the level of respect and professionalism you get from Don Schweitzer and his team. I'd highly suggest finding a smaller firm or an individual family law attorney who can focus on your case him/herself. These guys charge way too much and provide way too little. Don't believe me? Update: I previously left a one star review. Since then, I have spoken with Mr. Lai. I aired my grievances and he listened and didn't charge me for the privilege. Ultimately he refunded a small portion of my retainer. It's so hard to know how to proceed when obtaining a lawyer. If I knew then what I know now, I would probably have skipped retaining counsel. In my particular situation, my child was on the cusp of turning 17 and things were going south at the start of summer break 2021. If you're a parent trying to get a custody change at the start of summer, maybe wait until the fall. It's impossible to get a hold of teachers, administration and records. That's the advice I wish I had been given and I am now passing it on. As for recommending this law group, I can't endorse their services based on my single experience. That said, I was pleased that Mr. Lai reached out to ask what could be done to help me feel less taken advantage of. It would have been easy to just ignore my unhappiness. I was the respondent and had my own lawyer initially but I felt that my lawyer was trying make the case more complicated, probably wanting to drag the case to court. As I had no intentions of wasting money, time and energy with the divorce, I got rid of my lawyer and asked the petitioner (my ex) lawyer Anthony Lai to handle the case for the both of us. I requested a consult with Donald for a second opinion because I did not trust the advice my lawyer was giving me. My lawyer was advising me to drop my restraining order when she had never looked at the details of my case and the reasons she was giving were absolutely absurd. After talking to Donald, I was reassured that my suspicions were valid. The individual I was seeking a restraining order against has since been charged with stalking, indecent exposure, robbery and burglary to name a few. There is no reason why I should have dropped the charges and I had all the evidence I need. In the end my attorney sabotaged my case but because it was due to her incompetence, I still have a chance to pursue the individual in civil court. While Donald was not my attorney, I appreciate the honest critic of one of his professional colleague's less than stellar work and the reassurance I needed to trust myself and pursue the case. read more

I found and decided to hire Schweitzer based on the reviews here on Yelp--boy, what a mistake. I felt there was a real lack of preparation and execution in my representation. In the course of the buildup/preparation for the hearing, they basically took my written statement and cut/paste into the court document submitted to the court. There was very little strategizing/them asking me to provide additional info that might be helpful. But the real disappointment came when we were in front of the judge...My lawyer spoke tepidly for a few minutes in the beginning. And then the other side's attorney spoke aggressively for an extended period. She came prepared with info pertaining to case (even though there were many mistruths), spoke forcefully and cited precedents, etc... And my attorney didn't speak a word after that. Needless to say, the judge favored the other side. It really felt like the difference between a prepared professional and an unprepared amateur. Like almost everybody who hires a family attorney, this case was very important to me, personally. And I was willing to spend the money, in order to fight for what I believe was right. If I felt there at least a strong fight, I would have left disappointed, but satisfied that we at least tried. But, to my disappointment, that didn't happen. I did ask for a reduction in the fee (as expected, they ate up almost all of the retainer, after some emails back and forths/a couple phone calls/document creation and submission/zoom court appearance for 10 mins). During my initial interview with Donald, I was told a 5k retainer was required, but since this was such a simple matter, I should expect a partial refund at the end of the matter. About three months later the firm says I need to add to the retainer, even though all they have done is repeatedly contact me for information! I told them I'd send it when it came, but they kept emailing/calling making the same request. When I finally got and forwarded the info, they had used up the entire retainer and wanted more!! Here are some thoughts about my experience with Don Schweitzer's firm and him directly. Don assigned my case to an entry level attorney Jessica Carlos. Her style of interaction with me and opposing counsel felt more like clerical rather than coming from a place of advocating on my behalf. Once Don took the lead on my case, things went from bad to worse. After several strategy phone calls with Don and receiving his letter for my approval before sending them to opposing counsel, here's what happened. On two occasions the documents were either wrong or incomplete. Don's responses were, " I'm sorry I wasn't taking notes when we spoke" or "I'm sorry, I couldn't read my hand writing." At no time at all, neither Don or Jessica advocated for me. Divorce is difficult and stressful, dealing with Don's firm was even more stressful. After switching to Patrick Baghdaserian and working with Elijah Hakobian I knew my divorce was not only in the right hands but in the BEST of hands. UPDATE: 8/1/2012 we are sent an E-mail for bill for which we are made aware, 8/21/12 we received a notification from a COLLECTIONS AGENCY!!! Really? This is how you treat your clients when they leave after spending over 20-GRAND WITH YOU?? Do not retain this office unless you are prepared to stay forever, in my case I was sent to COLLECTIONS after 21-days!!! No reply to our calls asking why we were not billed correctly. I guess we may consider taking this firm to civil court if this is the way they hope to do business. ____________________________________________ We retained this law office for a custody battle. My wife and I felt that we were billed pretty hard when compared to our past experiences. We've retained other firms in the past and knowing what is expected I will say there has been a real change in billing here. When I first posted my feelings I was confronted over the phone by Donald. I told him that I would hope to provide a positive feedback but asked him to review our billing which had reflected ~~ $7,500 ~~ (for one declaration, one response to opposing declaration & one court HALL-WAY meeting to assign minor's counsel) still never stood one foot inside the court room at this time. FYI, it's still going up by the day. When I asked Donald why it was so expensive and we have not even seen the judge I was told that his rates have gone up and that I could seek assistance from an other firm if I didn't like the way I was being billed. I did mention that my folder had been touched by two attorneys and at least three paralegals which means each time that new person needed more time to familiarize them-self with my case costing me more in billed hours. In a conversation with Donald after he read my original posting he did say that my case would end up in or around the $20,000 range (something never explained to me till that point). Wow... I've gone to court several times through the years and on average have spent 3500-7500 for each case being heard in court but 20K is just insane IMO. I was told by Donald in an email dated: 7-18-12 "you should find a new attorney." I also think that is is very important that I mention I was adamant about the timing for the respondent being served with court paperwork because my daughter was to be with me during this time and she would not endure the wrath of the opposing party. This was fouled up as the paper work was sent to the courts early and the courts then sent paper-work to the opposing party about two weeks later. This is something that a law-firm should know. They never admitted any wrong doing, no apologize just a strong will to tell me they didn't do anything wrong. I wouldn't care but now my daughter was put in a bad position to deal with her Mom's questioning which I was very disappointed over. Look at my feedback, most is offering excellent referrals, I'm sad to offer up my true feelings after the amount of money I've spent over the years with this firm. Time to move on and find an attorney I can brag about. I was hoping that the firm would step up and do a good job but rather I feel they didn't want their performance in the courtroom to be put on the line so now most of this review is based on what I have mentioned. Final bill exceeded $7,000 (no court-room appearance) child custody matter. Argued with staff who mishandled my file and date to file and serve ex-wife putting my daughter at risk. 4. Changed firms (gave us wrong file), later sent correct file after final payment was collected. 5. SENT US TO COLLECTIONS after trying to dispute charges after we were told we were being billed at a lower rate. Finally AFTER BEING SENT TO COLLECTIONS less than three weeks after our bill arrived, Donald remembered and agreed to change rates. PAID IN FULL OVER $7,000 and had to drop $5,000 retainer for new firm to finish what these guys started. I spoke with Donald and told him this was an opportunity to do was is right during the first review, but he optioned to tell me to find a new attorney. I had a long and painful divorce process. I was represented by Casey Marticorena of this office, however Donald Schweitzer consulted and also attended many of my court dates. Even though I had two lawyers working on my case at times, I was only ever charged for one (Mr. Schweitzer if he was present, otherwise, Ms. Marticorena). I found the various members of the firm prompt about returning calls, and pro-active about reaching out to me when they had a question, an idea, or some news. I got quick and efficient responses to my questions most of the time, and I found the entire staff very easy to work with and willing to accommodate last minute or urgent items. However, the most important thing I can say about Casey and Don is that they told me what I needed to hear. Not always what I wanted to hear, but what I needed to hear. They did an excellent job of understanding my position, and were able to present each situation to me in a way that I was able to make the key decisions we needed to move forward. I have read the other reviews on Yelp and I must say I am surprised. They advocated for me vigorously and I always knew I was treated fairly. This firm provided representation in a very lengthy divorce case. In short, they provided exceptionally competent representation and billed us fairly. The only thing that could have made me happier is if they'd managed to be more aggressive with regard to issues regarding opposing counsel. (The other lawyer hired his client as an employee and paid her far less than she could have earned elsewhere, carried on a secret affair with her, then they were officially engaged within months of the final settlement and are now married.) In contrast to opposing counsel who filed fraudulent billing records (twice), padded their bills, and (I believe) committed perjury by claiming that the "client/employee/girlfriend would lose representation" if we did not provide them will more money to pay their legal fees... I feel that we were treated very fairly by Schweitzer and his firm. * For all court dates, Mr. Schweitzer accompanied his associate and provided representation, yet billed only for the associate's time. (Essentially, he joined his cheaper associate and provided representation in court pro bono.) Additionally, though the associate's rates naturally went up over the years, we continued to be billed only at the original rate. I do not know the official rules on how such things work. However, opposing counsel's billing records were padded in many obvious ways that ours were not. I believe it is very easy to be incredibly unhappy no matter what the outcome of such a case. Divorces are contentious and often very nasty. It took nearly 4 years to settle a case that should have never taken more than one. However, our case was unique given that opposing counsel hired his client and began an affair with her. Had this not happened, I feel any other opposing counsel would have had more clarity and advised his client to move things along at a more reasonable pace. *I base this assertion on the fact that opposing counsel's client stopped paying the bills around the same time the attorney's car was parked outside the client/employee/girlfriend's house nearly every night that the minor child was not present. I find it difficult to believe that opposing counsel would stop representing this person given that they were presumably involved in a sexual relationship. With regard to fraudulent billing, opposing counsel billed for days he was NOT in court, billed twice for legitimate days in some cases, and neglected to often detail the hours or rate for certain work done. Note: In reading some of the other reviews, I'm surprised to hear people have bills that they weren't aware of. We receive an email every month detailing the bill/balance due/etc. I don't feel that there has ever been a question of where things stood. The firm was happy to wait until the sale of the house (that opposing counsel now lives in with his new bride) to collect his fees from our portion of the community property. read more

I would rather give a ZERO. This was back in 2016. I was going through very tough times with my marriage and needed an advice. Met Ms. Marticorena, with an assumption that the first consultation was ~$200 (I think). I was told to file for divorce. I said I would think about it and left the office. Next day, the office called and said she would prepare for the filing. I told the receptionist to "HOLD" until I confirm as there would be charges if they proceeded with document preparation. Meanwhile I was working to see if my marriage would work out. Few days later i called back and told the office that I dont need further support and I reconciled with my wife. Ms. Marticorena called me back in a few mins. Told me she already had the paralegal work on my case and the papers are ready and I needed to pay $800!!!!! I was shocked. I ended up paying the amount and I asked her if the papers are ready please send them over now. The draft copy only arrived in an email a couple of days! Obviously she fished me out and started working on draft copy ONLY after I paid the fees. These people play with your emotions. Have no ethics. BEWARE AND STAY AWAY. read more

I've read all of these reviews and They have big differences in opinion. I myself have to agree with the bad ones. In my experience with this law office, they seem to care more about collecting fees and pumping up the bill then resolving it with less dispute. They seem to like to create dispute and use inexperienced lawyers to push for court, court and more court so they can get more money out of it. Divorce is bad enough with your own lawyer making more problems so that you get more opposition against you and more bad feelings and spend more money. I'm pretty sure that's the MO of this place. Of the few decent reviews here, one sounds like sour grapes agains her ex, not warm & fuzzy feelings for this law firm, one is confusing and one sounds possible real. I think the one possible real one lucked out if they got out of it with good reps and without spending all the money they have. My advice is go someplace else. Places like this have to charge more and dispute more so they can cover the expense of running a place in the high rent district. read more

This firm is outstanding!! From the receptionist to the paralegals and process servers .. and especially the attorneys. Sun Tzu's Art of War might have been a firm's "must read" as evidenced by their strategic maneuvers. Throughout my two years (yes it was that long) of working with Don and Casey I always felt as though I was equally as important to them as I was upon our first meeting. They are always available to answer the silliest of questions and to offer advice. They give support while always making sure that you and your loved ones are being protected and informed of all the possible outcomes during your case. I noticed that the firm's level of professionalism was superior to any that I witnessed during my two years of legal woes. They were always over prepared and they were highly respected by the judge. Don and Casey had moments where they calmly handled situations that other attorneys would have used to help drive their egos and draw attention to their firm. Don and his team have been like family. Today my judgement was signed. I realized that getting the final email from Andy... the paralegal .... the email would be the last one. I will miss Andy and the entire staff who were so helpful.
