I would hear so many great things but now that I tried this myself I truly question people's standards. I've never in my life have had to add salt to brisket.... Brisket was 1/5 fat and borderline flavorless. The pulled pork was decent. Surprisingly though I did enjoy their creamed corn and green beans. They also have this watery sauce which is a very sweet BBQ sauce which I did not enjoy. It reminded me of a sweet and sour sauce. I hate having to write this but they definitely fell short of my expectations.

My daughter enjoyed the burger that she ate it all up and barely touched her fries which is weird because she loves fries! So that tells you how good the burger was! Haha. First we didn't order a-lot, as we were going to celebrate with fam later. The inside was ok, it felt like we were in old farmhouse. Kinda cool. The food...we had a brisket sandwich, some turkey, brisket, green beans, and coleslaw. We live in Texas, and we are spoiled with all the tex mex, and bbq places. It seems a new one pops every month. With that being said, you have to stand out, well to stand out. Sadly for us this place doesn't. The bbq was lacking a really great bark, and flavor. The midget said it almost tastes like really good bill millers. I don't know if that was a compliment or bad thing. For me it was just underwhelming. The turkey was good. Just good, not bad or great. The bbq sauce also was nothing to write home about. The green beans were also just good. I don't know what made me choose coleslaw. I detest and hate it. Maybe it was because there were people behind us, and I was rushed. Well, this was easily the best coleslaw I've ever had. I mean coleslaw is on my list of foods that shouldn't exist, and they somehow managed to get me to love theirs! Unless someone invites and pays, we won't be back.

El Monte was the 82nd smokehouse on my quest to visit as many BBQ restaurants on the planet before…read moreI cross over. Here are a few thoughts from a self-proclaimed BBQ snob:) First off, El Monte is an absolute dive! You can very easily pass by and not give it a second look. But then again, many of the really good smokehouses are. My fiancee and I are new to San Antonio and like trying new BBQ places. We picked El Monte at random after our initial choice turned out to be closed. I ordered a 2-meat platter with brisket and sausage, which is my "go to" meal when trying out any new smokehouse. IMHO, those two meats...and their sides...tell you a lot about a BBQ joint. My fiancee ordered the brisket sandwich. The sausage was a slightly charred but still good, although nothing to write home about. The Barracho beans were pretty good, but not my style. Nor do I like rice with BBQ. Just to be clear...I like Mexican food, I like Tex Mex and I like BBQ. But I don't necessarily like them combined; it's a matter of personal taste for me. The potato salad was okay, but again, nothing to write home about. My fiance had the brisket sandwich and thought it was awesome. For starters, it was HUGE! In addition to the brisket, it had white cheese, pico and guacamole. She offered me a bite, but I was too occupied with my own plate. So, what was good? The brisket was freaking AWESOME!!! It was some of the best I've had. Great flavor and extremely tender. It literally crumbles on your fork and melts in your mouth. Not sure what was in their BBQ sauce, but it complements the brisket extremely well. Nothing else on my plate was bad at all, the brisket just blew everything out of the water. I would go back just for the brisket alone. If you stop by El Monte without trying it, you're selling yourself short. I've never given a 5-Star review based solely on the brisket, so this is first for me.
