When I finally reached a staff member, she very quickly checked the insurance portal and told me she could not find my mom's name. I had just gotten off the phone with the insurance company, who confirmed that my mom was in the system and assigned to Dr. Sheybani. When I tried to explain this, the staff member repeatedly gave the same response and did not make any additional effort to re-check or search more thoroughly. She then told me that the doctor was not accepting new patients--despite the fact that he is listed by the insurance as a provider who is accepting new patients. Because of this contradiction, I went in person to the public office to clarify what was happening. There, I confirmed again that my mom is in the system and that Dr. Sheybani is indeed her assigned doctor. I am a healthcare service provider myself, and I understand how critical respectful communication and client relations are in a medical setting. Regardless of how skilled a physician may be, the front office staff are the first point of contact--and they represent the practice. This is a medical office, not a retail store; patients are often worried, unwell, or caring for vulnerable loved ones. The dismissive and unhelpful attitude we encountered suggests that the staff would greatly benefit from additional training in professionalism, empathy, and problem-solving.

Over the last decade, I have only seen him once a year for my annual physical and standard lab work. Fortunately, I have been in great health. I believed I actually meant something to the practice, but lately, the way the front office is being run has left me with no choice but to find a new provider. I understand that insurance companies are making it harder than ever for practices to survive. However, the high-pressure tactics coming from the front desk have turned a necessary transition to a "membership" model into a personal dealbreaker. For over a month, I've left messages to speak to Dr. Raiman to get a straight answer about the new $400 fee. Because , if I wait too long to pay, I was informed by Liz about a "quota" system, where the price will jump to $3,000 a year (it might be $4,000) once a quota is met. If the messages are being passed and he still won't call, it's clear where I stand. Patty simply told me her job is to "pass the messages" and that, "honestly, Dr. Raiman isn't going to call me back to discuss. He did that in the letter he sent". On top of that there is zero plan to help long-term patients transition to a new provider. Being told that "Dr. Raiman has no recommendations or referrals" and "that I should just find one through my insurance company" is a cold way to end a 10-year history. Being ghosted and told to send my own medical records through a portal is not the professional transition of care I expected. Both Patty and Liz have been argumentative, mean, and dismissive throughout this process. Their "take it or leave it" attitude, blocking access, and the pressure they are applying regarding these fees have effectively ended my time as a patient. It's disappointing to see a decade of trust thrown away because of how the front desk has handled this. Since Liz and Patty are acting as a road block and believe Dr. Raiman will not return my call, I have no choice but to put up a post.

I usually rely on my GP for referrals, but this time I searched online and chose him because he was the only provider offering a relatively early in-person appointment. I arrived on time for what I had specifically requested and confirmed as an in-person visit. However, the receptionist (or office manager) greeted me rudely and unpleasantly, insisting it was scheduled as a Zoom appointment. No one called the day before to confirm, despite standard practice. When I handed over my insurance card, she thrust an iPad at me in a hostile manner to sign again, with no courtesy or explanation. Her tone and attitude were so consistently unpleasant that I wondered why someone so unhappy would remain in a patient-facing medical role,there are plenty of opportunities elsewhere in healthcare. Eventually, I was seen by Dr. Rokaw, who appeared to be a rather large, older physician (in practice for over 40 years). I mentioned I'd done some personal research on Hashimoto's to better understand my condition, and he responded dismissively with something like, 'If you already know the answers, why are you here?' His bedside manner felt condescending, abrupt, and uninterested--he seemed to go out of his way to make me feel foolish rather than addressing my concerns helpfully. Overall, the visit was unproductive and left me feeling dismissed. Given his long tenure, advanced age, and what appeared to be a sedentary build suggesting limited personal focus on physical health, it might be time for Dr. Rokaw to consider retirement. He could benefit from stepping away to prioritize exercise, improve his own well-being, and perhaps work on more respectful patient interactions. I strongly advise others--especially those with chronic autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto's--to run the other way and seek a more engaged, compassionate provider elsewhere.
