I have used Schmidt Flooring for several projects, a wide plank walnut flooring in the kitchen, and a pine floor on the entire second floor. They are not the cheapest, but they do very good work and offer solid value. They have a nicely laid-out showroom, and their installers are experienced and provide excellent service. read more

tl;dr Expect a quality install by a great team who will stand by their product until the end, but be prepared for it to take a long time with little to no communication throughout the entire process. We reached out to Schmidt for replacing our carpet with flooring, our stairs with new carpet, and a replacing laminate with tile in the bathroom/mudroom. Setting up an appointment to have someone take measurements of the project and get a quote going was fast and easy, as well as coming in to their showroom to go through samples. The timeline: 9/12, received first quote which was missing the tile work, was told revised quote would be coming soon. After follow-ups, received revised quote three weeks later on 10/4. Signed off on 10/29. Flooring installed 11/14-16. Carpet installed 12/10, and transitions were to be installed at the same time. Flooring fix on 12/11, and transitions were to be installed at the same time. Floor transitions finally installed 12/20. Tile installed 1/7-9 along with additional flooring fixes. Now I realize a part of the delay was our fault with as we didn't approve the quote right away... but I never expected this to be more than a two month process, let alone a four month process. Most of the time we were out of the loop of when things were to take place. All communication had to start with us, as we never heard from Schmidt first in preparation of anything. Installs did not take place on scheduled days, as the product had not arrived and we were not notified ahead of time. Installers asked us questions on where product was, as they were not notified by Schmidt either. It took countless calls, voicemails and emails to get things moving. The entire time we reiterated we were happy with the craftsmanship that had been completed and the teammates that came to our house but that we were very frustrated on the lack of communication. You may have noticed some fixes in there, too. Well, there were some minor issues with flooring cut too short in places, as well as the carpet on the stairs being cut too short, making for an odd gap at the transition along with a very loose end cap. This was all fixed beautifully in the end, but it took quite a bit of communication, time, and extra time off of work on our end to get things resolved. In the end we are very happy with our floors. We get compliments all the time from guests, as well. The process was neither flawless or stress free, but in the end we know we made the right choice with Schmidt. read more

I was actually very happy with the quality of the work done to strip and rehab our hardwood floors. Was very unhappy with communication from the office, and their estimate timing. Calls and emails could go unanswered for days. Didn't sound friendly or helpful when we would connect. Only the day before did we receive a notice that access would be needed to our electric box (We had already stored furniture in that part of the basement and needed to move.) The day before notice basically said they weren't responsible for anything should the job take longer, require more work, etc. So, I could have had a slow crew and had this take twice as long as estimated, with no compensation back to me. Why was this not mentioned in the initial contract? They estimated 7 days for our job, repair, and refinish hardwood on entire first floor. The crew came in and said it will be done in 3-3.5 days. It took them a total of 3. So they were finished well ahead of schedule which in one sense is a good thing. But on the other hand, we had already booked an AirBnB so we were out of the house during the staining/coating days. So we would have never needed to spend that extra cash, which was significant. We luckily had an excellent crew. But Schmidt subcontacts their crews - they are not Schmidt employees. Had planned to recarpet the upstairs and basement if this had been a good experience, but based on communication, we won't be back. Sanded, stained and sealed 75 year old red and white oak flooring for two bedrooms, hallway, living room, dining room and entryway over three days this month. Absolutely beautiful job done. We decided to refinish the hardwood floors in our new home before moving in. Pete was very helpful as we decided what to do. Liana did a fantastic job coordinating on our fixed timeline. And last but not least, Javier and Jake who did the work were wonderful. We spent time with them the first day to pick out stain color - they were friendly and funny experts; their guidance was very much appreciated. The quality of work was excellent. Good luck with this company. Numerous messages went unanswered over the course of a few days. I finally decided to show up and waited around 30 minutes. No one even have the courtesy to say that they would be with me shortly or give me an idea of how long it would take to get some help. I have hired Schmidt a number of times and been happy until this time. They sent very untrained contractors to my house despite representing them as experts. We left our house for 10 days for it to air out. When we returned, we found the job wasn't properly done which Schmidt agreed was correct. They sent the contractors back and we again exited for 10 days. When we returned, the floors were still improperly done, very rough, not protected, not properly sealed, with streaks, failure to sand down stain in several areas (we went from stain to natural/clear), etc. They agreed the job wasn't finished properly but this is where we hit an impasse as after leaving twice and them failing twice, we did not want to give them a third try with no proof they'd actually complete an acceptable job. They talked in circles until they finally took me to court for half the cost of the agreed upon job (pretty accurate sign they knew it wasn't done properly!). I was served in December 2020. My court date was June 2021 and I was ill at the time, ending up hospitalized shortly thereafter and I wasn't prepared for the hearing due to my health nor did I have an attorney (and they did--it was clear they and I have very different ideas on ethical behavior). I lost the court case. They DOUBLED the amount they were asking for 15 minutes into the hearing saying they made a mistake (a mistake that they inexplicably didn't notice for six months) and the judge allowed it. This photo is representative of the work they did throughout my house for which I was required to pay them over $5k. We have to hire someone new to redo the entire space. You be the judge on in this is fair and if this is the sort of work you want done in your house. read more

We used Schmidt Flooring to replace carpeting and match it with existing floors followed by a change in color and refinishing. Our fireplace was stone and the front edges were asymmetrical. Chris was able to carve the outline to mesh perfectly without a need to cover the edge with another piece of wood. Andrew, who did the refinishing with Ben, was so easy and accommodating to work with. They were efficient and neat, using high-tech equipment to keep the dust to a minimum. Above all, they arrived when they said they would and completed the job in less time than we anticipated. We couldn't recommend this company enough and the four people that we met who work for them! read more

Terrible customer service. We used them twice unfortunately. The first time the installer did not show up when promised, would leave during the day for 5 hour blocks of time, and would stay late to make up for the time he used poorly during the day. The second time, they misquoted us and over charged us without explanation. When asked for the explanation they simply stated this is how we charge people. Terrible business. The only reason they got one star is because they have a lot of product options. I would never recommend this business. Not even to my worst enemy. read more

Added oak flooring to 2 rooms and had existing oak flooring in hallway stripped and stained to match the new flooring. Due to their busy schedule, the work was completed over a period of approximately 6 weeks ( a bit on the long side) and I called them numerous times to fix issues which they refused. Positives: Special dust containment system that worked well in keeping dust to a minimum from sanding. Negatives: Installer was screaming at someone on cell phone and was so upset he made some deep gouges in floor while he was using sander. This was not fixed. Receptionist was very rude - demanded we pay bill before work was completed. Told her that work was not completed - she said that is not what the installer told her. Told her to come out and see for herself. Buckled/raised floor boards in several places; on the end of one piece of oak flooring board, a large chunk was missing from it - installer installed it anyway and stained it. When I complained he put some wood putty on it (without even smoothing it down) and said there - now it's fixed. I had another flooring contractor come out and cut that section of board out - he was also disturbed by the poor job that was done. This could have been the result of a poor installer but I had also spoken with several people in their office who were rude and didn't have the sense to come out and check the work that was done. Bypass this flooring contractor as there are other contractors with better quality work and better customer service. read more

We recently relocated to the Milwaukee area and bought a home. Prior to moving in, we hired an Interior Designer to help us plan some updates to the home, which included replacing carpet on the main floor. Since Schmidt Custom Floors installed the original hardwoods, we invited them to bid on this work. Ultimately, we contracted with Schmidt. The entire experience, from the first meeting to finalization of our project, was a nightmare. I would NEVER recommend Schmidt, nor would I ever work with them again. In fact, when their customer service agent called after completion of the job, I shared my dissatisfaction with the experience we had with Schmidt, and never received a call from anyone from the company, nor did we receive any follow up at all. All of the people, from the sales personnel to the installers, were unprofessional and rude. We should have gone with our gut after the first meeting, but given their strong market position, we decided the rude estimator was an anomaly and contracted with them. For reference, this was not a small project. We ripped out carpet on most of the main floor (5000 sq ft house) and replaced the carpet with hardwoods. The entire project cost approx. $20K. If you value your time and money, and expect good (not even exceptional) customer service, do not contract Schmidt. They don't care about your business and they don't care about quality; they just want your money. read more

Schmidt refinished and restained the hardwood floors throughout our house in the Spring, and while we were pleased with the craftsmanship of the work itself, the sales representative and management team were terrible to work with. Despite what they claim on their website regarding their customer service and truly caring about the customers problems and what the customer thinks, they clearly do not. The "touch-up" work that was required after their laborers were through was drastically more than expected, and they would not own up to that inconvenience is caused. Too much "he-said, she-said" out of the sales rep, and not enough "how can we make this right for the customer". On top of that, the lack of support from the management team proves that their reputation in the industry is not that important to them. Look elsewhere before committing to this company, but if you do, make sure EVERY SINGLE THING the sales reps recommends or expects out of his crew is in writing. read more

Phenomenal wood floors! They truly look amazing- Highest of quality!

By far the worst company I have ever had to work with. Not only did I pay for expensive wood, they installed the wrong wood. We were set back till after my daughters graduation with an unfinished floor. It rained that day so we couldn't even use our house for our guests. After finally getting our floor installed, everything looked alright. We still had shades of streaks but it was okay. But to there mistake, that put us back an extra week and a couple days. We were given no discount or money back on the big mistake which was very disappointing. They just gave us a few more bottles for cleaning the wood. The installers also played loud music, took way to many breaks about 4 or 5 a day between 5 and 10 minutes. Also before the mistake they were very nice but after they were rude. read more
