Visiting grandma in North Dakota. Great sandwich place albeit a chain. Went with the original because hey, it's the original for a reason! Ham, capicola, Swiss cheese, tomato, lettuce on a toasted bun. A bag of original chips to round it out. About 8 bucks.

Amazing food. I'm honing your miss this restaurant when it closes. I love the pizza and the original sandwich is great too!

It's as if someone has heard of sourdough and bread by rough discription, tried really hard yet missed the mark.

There's just something magical about being on a road trip and eating gas station food - at least…read morethat's the case for me. It's happened time and time again - the most recent being just last month, when on the road finishing out visiting all 50 US States. ND was my 50th. Anyway, while in Bismarck, stopped off at Landers and had a great experience. It was a simple lunch - An Italian sub and a cup of soup. Tossed in chips and a salad too. Getting ahead of myself. It's in the building of a gas station. One side is the convenience store the other is Landers. Counter where your food is made to order and seating. It's not table service - walk up to the counter, order and find a seat. Your food will be brought to you. When you're done, head to register to pay the bill. It's not easy to capture how tasty my meal was with words. But as I've said a countless number of times, if our tastes align, you'll love this place. Everything from the bun, to the soup and chips. I devoured it all leaving the salad for my friend. I especially enjoyed how the sub's ingredients were evenly loaded. Had a taste of it all in every bite. Unlike other experiences where it's all lettuce or the sauce is overpowering. The chips weren't too greasy or salty and the soup was just tied everything together. Obviously I'm not a regular but I know if I lived in the area, I would be and then some. Definitely the duke. If you're in the area, it's definitely a must.

Also the hours are 10am-3pm, which are much shorter than the gas station hours (I only know because I came back the next day lol). The deli has everything made to order so it's as fresh as it gets! I ordered a half sammy and soup combo ($13.99) w/ fountain drink, as well as a salad entree because I couldn't decide what to order. They brought the food to me at the table and quickly realized that it was way too much food. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed it all. The sandwich bread had a nice chew to it and the ratio of all the ingredients were well balanced. As for the soup it was flavorful, not too salty, and just made me feel all warm inside. I really liked the micro greens in the salad as well as the slices of fresh avocado. While it's located inside a gas station, it really acts like an independent deli shop that has a good steady flow of customers. I wish we had a shop like this back home because I would definitely be a regular!

According to the restaurant, they have been open for 50 years. I googled the best lunch at in Bismarck and this restaurant topped the list. When we got there, the Line was out the door, but people were saying it's worth it. Country House deli has lots of sandwiches to choose from. We asked some people in line what their favorite sandwich was. I went with the grinder on sourdough and I was not disappointed. This sandwich was delicious the deli meats, the sauces, the bread, all super fresh . It looks like they rotate their soups and if the wild rice soup would've been available I totally would've ordered that because that is not something I can get anywhere outside of North Dakota. The staff are friendly, and the line moves pretty quick. The food comes out relatively fast. I loved my sandwich from here and I wish it was closer because I would probably get sandwiches all the time. We were the table that was cracking up in the back and stayed there until you closed. Thanks for making this a really fun memory for us.

Like other yelpers, I found the bread very tasty and fresh. The soup was also very good, it was not roux laden as many soups of this style can be. It was light and flavorful. I just wish I had a hunk of that bread to dunk in it. Oh and most importantly, it's Veteran owned!

From the moment we wandered in, the owner was incredibly friendly and helpful. Not only did he explain what every dessert in the case was and how it was made, he let us try their fresh baked breads and described their sandwiches and the grocery area of the store as well! It was a personal tour and we were so grateful! One of my friends has family in Mexico/travels there frequently and was delighted to find some of her favorite soda as well as desserts (albeit with different names) here. And she left well stocked! Of course I had to ask if they had a vegetarian sandwich (as he was describing how they make their sandwich meat) and he paused a beat and then exclaimed, "That's not latin!" Oh it was so funny, we all had a great laugh! He went on to say he'd be happy to put some veggies on a sandwich for me if I wanted. We did ask how he came to North Dakota and he explained it was because of the hurricane in Puerto Rico awhile back. We told him how happy we were he chose Bismarck of all places. It can't be easy! We all left loaded down with bakery boxes and items from the grocery portion of the store. And were all delighted at how amazing their prices were! Seriously - this place has great prices. I got tres leches, a giant slab of the most amazing vanilla cake, a cup of what tasted like horchata that was a cross between pudding/jello in texture, and a cork screw shaped pastry filled with bavarian cream that I've seen reviewers call a cannoli but he was specific in the fact that it was absolutely not a cannoli. (I believe he called it a quesito but I could be wrong.) The owner also stressed that the desserts in the case change in variety daily so what may be there one day won't be there the next. All in all - this business is fantastic in every way (right down to the fact that the room was absolutely spotless and sparkling clean) and we will be back next time we are in Bismarck! Please turn out and support this wonderful new business!

For a small restaurant, they also have an impressive wine selection. We started with the garlic bread, hot olives, and meatballs -- all of which were flavorful, balanced, and absolutely delicious. For entrées, our table had the breaded walleye, the Bolognese pasta, and the Porchetta. The walleye and Bolognese were outstanding, but unfortunately the Porchetta was a big letdown. The skin was chewy rather than crisp, with a thick layer of unrendered fat beneath it, and most concerning, it still had visible pig hair. I was expecting the classic combination of crackling skin, melting fat, and tender pork, but instead it was oddly undercooked on the outside, dry inside, and after biting into hair, I really lost my appetite for it. We finished with tiramisu and a torte, and both desserts were excellent -- a strong way to end the meal. Overall, Anima Cucina has a lot going for it: charming atmosphere, friendly staff, great starters, and standout entrées (other than the Porchetta). I'd happily return for the appetizers, pasta, fish, and desserts, but I'd avoid the Porchetta based on my experience.
