Items, I should say, that are specifically chosen because of the quality and commitment involved in making them. Nothing here is mass-produced, nothing is thoughtlessly thrown together. The store, comprised of a few small rooms, is attractively laid out. -visiting the shop is a visual treat. Herr Bodewig carries unique and interesting consumables primarily from Switzerland, Germany, Spain and Italy. A list of his 'partners' can be found via the Spezerei Bodewig website. The location of this shop is pretty prime. Located in the Sankt Johanns Vorstadt, one is able to enjoy a view overlooking the Rhein from a very small plaza directly adjacent the shop. Herr Bodewig stocks four to five different types of locally roasted Haenowitz and Page coffee, a favourite of mine. Another new-found fave is Italian brewed '32' beer, from 32 Via dei Birrai. They brew a variety of lovely ales from light to dark and much in between that are meant to be paired with food. I've sampled already the red amber and was not disappointed. This shop is great when one is looking to 'wow' a special someone (or one's self) with a gift, or when one is looking to support small businesses from around Western Europe. I would encourage any and all to stop by and support this lovely, little shop!

The experience is about $30 USD per person and lasts roughly an hour. You start with a tour of the bakery where they share the history and show you part of the production process. The best part is at the end, when you get to package your own little gift box with eight biscuits to take home. I really enjoyed learning that the bakery has been making their specialty treats since 1753. It is still run as an independent family business, and you can tell they genuinely care about preserving this Basel tradition. Another thing I loved was the location. It is only a short walk from the river, so it's easy to explore the Rhine area before or after the tour. Overall, this was a really enjoyable and memorable activity.

It turned out to be very interesting and fun. There were two different groups in our tour...us, who spoke English, and another larger group who spoke only German. However, our guide was awesome, as she did the tour, and narrated the presentation, in both English and German. You get to sample some of their products, and also package your own little gift box to take home. It was well worth the time and cost, and we took home some interesting "cookies" for the family back in the US. Nice people, some interesting history, and an easy adventure to take in Basel.
