I love this German Delicatessen in downtown San Antonio! The food is always amazing and the root beer is always cold delicious! The servers all seem happy to be working there, which is a nice experience for the customer too. I like to bring out of town guests to the restaurant, too, because it has kept the history of the building alive. Delicious lunch spot near the Riverwalk! Sure, it's touristy. It is the oldest restaurant in San Antonio after all but Schilos isn't just a tourist stop. We loved everything we ordered from the house made root beer to the Ruben sandwich. The sides were all very flavorful and unique. You can't get spaetzel, German potato salad, and corn casserole just anywhere. The food combined with friendly service and an old school delicatessen vibe make for a fun and delicious experience. Absolutely recommend coming here for a casual lunch while in the area. read more

I'm sad to say we found this place disappointing. We were excited to find this German restaurant with a Texas flare. It's supposedly the oldest restaurant in San Antonio. It's small, and there was a wait both days we stopped by for lunch. We didn't have time for the wait the first day and so we came back the next. Unfortunately, you have to wait outside where seating is limited with little shade. Once we were seated, we were able to take in the historic decor. The restaurant itself was really cute. Ultimately, we found the service and food disappointing. We looked at the menu outside and ordered as soon as we sat down. My friend had jagerschnitzel with green beans and potato salad. I ordered the wienerschnitzel with spaetzle and zucchini. The server was very friendly, but we waited 45 minutes for our lunch to arrive and we saw a couple other tables seated after us finishing their meals as ours were finally brought to the table. She wasn't very attentive, but she was very nice and friendly the two times she did come to our table throughout the entire visit. Finally, we were not fans of the food. There was too much Texan twist for our liking which left our cravings for German cuisine completely unsatisfied. The Jager sauce was a congealed something else. The green beans were mushy. The breading on our schnitzel had some unpleasamt flavors we couldn't identify and both were tough. My spaetzle never came out. I wasn't told they had run out of spaetzle until were we being served. They offered to make something else but after the 45 minute wait we already had, I just wanted to eat. But as previously said, it wasn't very appetizing. I mostly ate my sautéed zucchini, which was luke warm and unseasoned. I also finished my drink before the food arrived and was never offered a refill or anything else. Whenever I come across these old, popular, but not very good restaurants in a touristy area. I'm always left wondering if I just had a one off experience or whether the restaurant is only surviving because it's touristy and historic. Either way, it's not one we'd recommend other visitors to try. read more

A nice German restaurant in the heart of downtown, not far from the River Walk. Lots of locals and a rich history. Stopped in for breakfast before visiting the Alamo. The schnitzel was a little dry but the biscuit was light and fluffy. The potato pancakes were kinda doughy. I think the potatoes weren't wrung out before frying. Apple sauce was homemade and tasty. $4 for a cup of coffee was a little steep. Our server was very nice and helpful. read more

Flew out of SAT and some friends happened to be here too, de we decided to meet up for breakfast before I would head home. This supposed to be the oldest restaurant in town and it is German. It has a German feel as we walked in and sat down. It reminded me of the restaurants I've been to living in Germany. Great ambiance and atmosphere. It's awesome to get to visit historic restaurants, it's even better when the food and service exceeds all expectations. Schilos did that. Betsy and I sat at the bar, and Bello was a perfect server. Personable, available, funny and attentive. We ordered the chicken and biscuits with a couple sunny side up eggs, and a bowl of split peas soup. Yes, soup, it's not just for breakfast anymore. The fried chicken was the best we have ever had, spicy panko crust tender and juicy. The breading stayed attached and was awesome. The split pea soup was thick and great. Was in town on business and came to this place with my work colleagues, six people ordered and six people were disappointed. Bacon burnt, hash-browns burnt (returned them and came back greasy and burnt), pancakes were more like crêpes without the taste of the crepes. Everything tasty the same like a blacktop that should be replaced. We were shocked that our server even brought the meals to the table with the straight face. I would skip this place. There are better options close by. I gave it one star because yup doesn't allow negatives. read more

Super fast service! We were seated immediately during a busy lunch hour and our first visit. Root beers were brought to us in a chilled mug. I Can describe the root beer as smooth and rich! Historical does not necessarily equal good. More than several open tables and booths. On entry, was met by Ms Attitude who stated it would be a 20-25 minute wait and to step outside. As she uttered 'step outside' another waitress, Valerie, approached and said there were open tables, led us to a nice booth and took our order. Well, the reputation proceeds itself. The biscuits and gravy are really good. The fried chicken with biscuits and gravy, EVEN BETTER..... highly recommend. What i will say needs some major improvement is the coffee. First I thought it was rotten creamer. Til people at my table had the same experience and their coffee was black. The hours of operation are limited so we made a point to wake up early and be the first ones in line. The items I wanted they did not serve until lunch Time or they were completely out. They said Yeah they run out fast! But we were the first in the door, som I'm pretty sure many of their items are not made there. I had to pic my 3 choice since they were out..... online I did hear a few good reviews.... But it was a mediocre Ruben sandwich. Sauce in the side which o love but it was very watery which was disappointing. The bread was maybe a little stale and they sings toast it enough to cover that up. My husband had the breakfast special with hash browns, schnitzel , an egg and a dried piece of bacon. The pastry we wanted they were also out. The one we settled for was disappointing too. Staying downtown for Fiesta week, I look forward to coming back to one of my favorite downtown breakfast places.....Schilos, pronounced Sheelows. This old world German deli has been serving up tasty treats since 1917 so that must tell you something about their food. On this occasion, I sat at the bar and my very nice waitress introduced herself and took my order: the Papa Fritz breakfast with scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns, biscuit, and a pancake. It didn't take long for the order to come out and so I dig in. The eggs are scrambled softly, just how I like them, the hash browns are nice and crunchy on top and soft underneath, the sausage patties are very tasty and not overly salty, the biscuit is soft and moist, and finally the pancake we perfect after adding some butter and syrup. Theses classic recipes have stood the test of time for a reason and are my favorites when I'm staying downtown. If you happen to be in the downtown area and looking for a great breakfast/brunch/lunch spot then do yourself a favor and check out Schilos. Oh, by the way, they make their own Root beer in house. I sat at the bar and was served very quickly and checked in on often during the meal. My favorite part was the desserts they had which they said were made in house! Schilos is a great example of why you need to keep your head up when you walk. If you just go to San Antonio and stay down below on the Riverwalk, you'll only experience subpar food and drink and not the best the city has to offer. Get off the Riverwalk get up on street level and go to Schilos at least for lunch. If you're used to New York style delis or Jewish delis, this is a little different but still very high-quality and really good Ruben and pastrami style sandwiches and German potato salad. Mix in a cold beverage and you've got it made. Definitely worth the trip. read more

I was at shilo's delicatessen, the oldest restaurant in San Antonio, TX. With 2 of my sons, we stopped in for lunch. My oldest son just graduated from Air Force boot camp, so he had a town pass to leave the base. Shilo is known for their own home brewed root beer and their Reuben sandwiches. They had German style food. We tried the root beer, Reuben sandwich, German schnitzel, and patty melt. And for dessert, we shared a peach cobbler with ice cream...it was all very delicious And the server was excellent also! He thanked my oldest son for his service since he was in uniform. An institution endures. Sitting at the bar in a spot that has served lunch for 117 years is a satisfying experience even before the food arrives. Schilo's is hard to beat for Old San Antonio atmosphere, and the staff is as friendly as you will find anywhere, anytime. Our favorites are the veggie omelette or the Reuben with extra kraut, but everything on the menu is worthy (chicken and dumplings and root beer on days when I can ignore my health plan). From the Uncultured Swines perspective : let's just start off with the price so freaking reasothe food wasn't bad. It was pretty good it's definitely different. The biscuits were amazing the chicken with the gravy was a little spicy the applesauce definitely amazing love the coffee the eggs are OK I love you they thoroughly cook the hashbrowns but all in all it was OK it's not bad. The pancake was amazing though Cultured Swine : The bratwurst is fantastic and true to original taste. The biscuits are the perfect consistency and taste like a hug. The potato pancakes? Phenomenal! I recommend trying it with the sour cream, you wont regret it. The applesauce is good and fresh. The hot mustard is perfect - if it was sold on shelves I would buy it constantly. Found this on Yelp while searching for lunch spots. It was a rough choice whether to go here for breakfast or lunch. But the breakfast taco and cherry strudel on the menu won me over. And it was very close to Starbucks. They have a counter in the back for singles to eat but there was no foot rest so I opted for a two-top table. I ultimately moved back to the counter. Lee my waiter was very pleasant to took very good care of me. I ordered the egg, bean, cheese, avocado breakfast taco. It was the highlight of my day! Best breakfast taco ever! We had high hopes, but it took three tries to get my wife's order correct. Azalea, our waitress was very good, but they just could not get this right. I ate my breakfast before it got cold, my wife ended up eating after I was finished. The breakfast sandwich was fine, nothing special as were the hashbrowns. The Bloody Mary was good...but I've had many many others that were better. We loved being "upstairs" (three steps). There were great old photos and postcards. Came from out of state on the way to New Orleans and made a stop in this city. Walked in and glad we did our food was delicious no complains. We were greeted immediately with a smile.
