I proposed to my now fiancee this past Saturday and she said yes. The engagement ring came from Schiffman's at Friendly Center. My mom, who worked in the wholesale jewelry industry for her entire career, helped me immensely in building the ring. She handed down her engagement diamond to me and my fiancee. So, not only did the diamond come with a lot of love and meaning (it's priceless to us), it was a practical decision as well. Schiffman's supplied the new mounting and also the wedding ring. My mom initially went to Windsor Jewelers in Winston-Salem, but ultimately chose to work with and purchase from Schiffman's. Schiffman's has been in Greensboro since 1893. They have two locations in Greensboro (downtown and Friendly Center) and a location in Winston. My mom worked with Rich Lindor to create the rings and had them shipped, overnight, to me in Georgia. You could say I was feeling somewhat anxious to receive the package the next day. When I opened the boxes, I couldn't believe my eyes. The rings were absolutely stunning. I got nervous just looking at them. Mom did good. My fiancee and I had gone ring shopping in Atlanta (Solomon Brothers was my pick) and my fiancee picked out a ring she liked. It was Sylvie brand, white gold I believe, with a round-cut diamond, and pave on the band optional. It was simple, timeless, and elegant. I sent pictures to my mom, the expert, and she found a design that exceeded both my and my fiancee's expectations. It looks even better than the ring my fiancee had picked out. The brand is called Precision Set and the rings look amazing. The engagement stone is a round brilliant cut (I think round is the most popular shape these days). The ring is platinum. Platinum is more expensive than white gold. It looks like white gold, but it's more pure, durable, and low maintenance. There's a melee pave set on the shank in a three-row arrangement (three rows of pave, round and full cut, on either side of the basket) with a four-prong setting. To us, the ring is perfect in every way -- the look (especially the sparkle), the fit, everything about it. We couldn't be happier with the result. As for the wedding ring, it matches the engagement ring exactly, except the three-row pave covers the entirety of the band. Rich called me after the rings were delivered to make sure I received the rings and everything was to my satisfaction (it was). I spoke to Rich at length about the rings and he did a great job of explaining everything and answering all the questions I had. He was professional, knowledgeable, and polite. I enjoyed talking to him. He also sent me an appraisal, prepared by Schiffman's in-house certified gemologist appraiser (American Gem Society) Edward Durbin, for insurance purposes. Again, in the end, we couldn't be happier with the rings from Schiffman's. Thank you, Rich. I went in first time today and wasn't helped. Looked around for about 10 minutes and finally got someone's attention. I was asked to hang out at the bar. There was a lovely lady working and she offered me a drink and a wonderful chocolate chip cookie. I waited another 20 minutes chatting with her and finally left so I never got to get my necklace I wanted. Currently looking for a local jeweler. Will keep trying other spots. I have taken jewelry to Schiffman's in the past for cleaning and repair and been pleased with the work, so I expected the same when I came in today to see about having a silver Tiffany necklace cleaned. I've had this necklace for 15+ years and while I recognize it isn't the caliber of most of the jewelry Schiffman's sells, it is very precious to me. It was mildly tarnished all over as pictured in the photo, as silver this pure doesn't stay clean for long. I was recently laid off and wanted to wear my necklace to a job interview. The red-haired sales girl -- I didn't catch her name -- actually turned her nose up at my necklace when I took it out. She did that judgy little exhale through her teeth and said "It's SO tarnished, I don't know if we can do it. If we can, in that condition it'll be a charge, let me see what the jeweler says" and took it to the back, then came back and said because of the "condition" it'd be $75 because they'd have to "really work" it on the polishing wheel and it would take a couple of hours. It genuinely was not even that tarnished, and a chain like this can't be put on a polishing wheel. You put it in cleaner and maybe a sonic bath. It was clear they just didn't want to do it, which was fine, but there was no reason to lie. I wasn't comfortable proceeding with the service after that. She said I could try getting a polishing cloth on Amazon until I got back on my feet. The whole exchange was insulting and left me crying. Like I said, this piece might be beneath them, but it is everything to me. I would have been more than happy to pay, but the attitude was entirely unnecessary. I took it to a different jewelry store nearby and wouldn't you know it, they put it in a sonic bath and cleaned it, free of charge, in about 5 minutes while I browsed. I will be going to that store for any future jewelry needs, while Schiffman's has ensured I will quite literally never set foot in there again. Took a Tag watch that had the second hand skipping which indicates a new battery is needed soon. Took it to get a new battery. Unfortunately got the watch back and started losing time. Did not have this issue prior. Of course they didn't take responsibility for the issue and tried to persuade me to purchase a new watch. In order to get this fixed I would have to pay $400-$500 to get fixed. Will never give them anymore business. read more

I was somewhat reluctant to go into Schiffmans due to several negative customer service reviews. Those concerns subsided quickly, however, when Ben Ehrmann sidled over in his festive holiday outfit and big smile and proceeded to help ne find exactly what I was looking for. No high pressure sales. No condescension. None of what was written in some of the previous reviews. Ben even offered me coffee and an aperitif! I left feeling great about my purchase and my experience at Schiffmans. I'm in Sales and appreciate great customer service when I receive it, which is a lost art form IMHO. I have had two interactions with Schiffman's Jewelers and I will never go in their store again. TLDR: Customer service sucks, but their repair work is good. My first experience was wedding band shopping with my now husband. We went to the Winston-Salem location and were fairly ignored for the first ten minutes of our browsing. Once someone came to help us and my husband explained what we were looking for, I was told that contour bands without diamonds don't exist (they do, they just aren't carried by the store) and my husband was told regardless of the metal choice his ring would look exactly like the displayed sterling silver. I'm not sure how they arrived at this conclusion given the disparities in metal appearance. We were passed off fairly abruptly to another sales associate and shortly thereafter left with a poor experience from their disinterested and snobbish attitude. A few months down the line after our wedding my engagement band cracked. This was a ring we had purchased before moving to North Carolina from another vendor. I keep full insurance on all of my jewelry and after some research found Schiffman's to be highly rated on repairs. I was not keen to go back into their store after our previous experience but decided to try them one last time. I chose their Greensboro location thinking perhaps a different store staff would make the difference. After confirming all the store information with my insurance and verifying they have a direct-pay to the store policy, I called Schiffman's to make sure they had the information and see if I needed an appointment. I was told no, just bring it in. I was greeted immediately and as soon as I mentioned I was bringing in a repair instead of looking to make a purchase, the demeanor was so markedly different I nearly got whiplash. The staff member I spoke with was obviously impatient with me and continually made condescending comments about how the repair was inexpensive and I should just pay out of pocket instead of using my policy. I was very clear that I had already begun the claim process and this is how I would proceed. I left my ring, with reservations. Weeks later I received the notification my repair was done and ready for pickup. Upon coming to the store I found that despite my repeated clarification that this was through my insurance claim AND providing claim information at the drop off, they had no knowledge of the insurance element. They refused to abide by the policy paperwork showing to bill the insurance directly for payment and would not release my ring without immediate payment. I was told they have a continual issue with this insurance company-- something that is not only not my fault, but should have been relayed when I provided the insurance information at drop off. I would not have left the ring with them without getting better clarification from all parties if I had been made aware at the outset this is an ongoing issue. As I was obviously not leaving my ring with them any further I paid the balance. The ring was repaired and very clean when I picked it up. The repair work is obviously well done. However, the customer service interactions and lack of communication between staff is so exceedingly bad I will never go back. The sales lady I picked my ring up from was pleasant, but every other staff interaction has been lacking. I have since discovered from co-workers that they too have stopped going to Schiffman's due to poor customer service. read more

I've been going to Schiffman's for years (usually small repairs and buying small jewelry pieces). Recently my fiancé and I went to buy some jewelry for a quinceañera. The staff was SUPER knowledgeable and helpful and even thought it took us almost 2 hours to finally choose some pieces, Linda never looked annoyed and helped us compare and look at various items without being pushy(which is great because I've been to other jewelry stores and the staff has been pushy). We were also later helped by Mr. Lindor who was AMAZING, he was super knowledgeable not only about watches but also very personable. I brought a gold plated chain here for a repair on the clasp. They fixed the clasp however when cleaning it they completely rubbed off the gold plating, then tried to blame it on the necklace. You should be able to polish and clean gold plating without taking it off! read more

Although I was told there are twenty employees, apparently only the person who opened my email request was allowed to respond to me. I chased a hard to acquire watch around the world, only to find it in my own backyard at Schiffman's. I told our story to Jeff Burcham, that my husband was on waiting lists around the country for a particular watch and that I had stopped in at stores in cities around the world while traveling for business to try to find it for him for a milestone birthday/wedding anniversary combo gift. He mentioned they would be getting one in to one of their stores and was willing to offer it to us. My husband was shocked and I am grateful to have been able to be the one to give this very special gift to an extremely discerning collector. Jeff went way above and beyond to make the occasion more special than I thought possible. I also had a great experience with Schiffman's when I trusted them to refurbish my wedding ring. They restored it to like-new condition. It's a very intricate ring with many tiny settings and filigree. In my humble opinion, Schiffman's is *the* place to go for jewelry in the Triad. There are a lot of competing stores in our area, but it's the people that set it apart. I'm a typical "guy" who's been faced with a number of events I'd like to celebrate with jewelry purchases. Only trouble is, I don't know the first thing about buying "bling." Admittedly, I need help. The folks at Schiffman's made it a lot easier. I have found that, when buying something I don't often purchase, it's easy for salespeople to "talk down" to me (I need think no further than my last car purchase). However, when I've visited Schiffman's at Friendly, not only have they helped me, they've made me feel like a king and know just the right questions to ask. Seriously, I'm a fan. My husband and I bought each other our wedding rings for each other over 4 years ago, so I go in there to get my ring cleaned for free every once in a while. The customer service there is absolutely superb. You never feel like they are trying to figure out how much money you have to spend, they just treat you as a welcome guest, even if just to get your ring cleaned. I also had a stone come out of the band of my ring once, and they took care of everything start to finish to get it fixed. I can't imagine if I would have tried to do the same thing with Kay's or Jared or one of those huge chains. If I could give them 0 stars I would. This 1 star is because I thought the store was nice, but the employees... not at all. My sister and I went into this place to simply look at different styles of engagement rings. It was not busy at all and I saw 2 other employees sitting down. When we entered a women instantly asked us what we were looking for so we told her and we proceeded with her to the case of rings. I work in a jewelry store and I have to say I'm pretty knowledgeable about jewelry, but I wanted to step away and just be a customer for once and I was not impressed at all by the staff. The employee pulled out a ring and said " this is a 3 stone diamond ring and the center stone is a 3 carat Asher cut stone" and my sister made a comment because she was surprised to hear that it was 3 carats. In her head a 3 carat stone would have been much larger but that's beside the point, immediately after my sister made a comment the employee took the ring back and said " ladies just to let you know this ring sells for $80,000" and then she proceeded to put the ring back. Excuse me!?!?! I was baffled that she assumed we couldn't afford that. That's the first things in retail- don't assume. There were so many things that went wrong with this experience, so bad my sister had tears in her eyes by the time we made it back to the car, so to make a long story short, I was absolutely disgusted by the sales lady's attitude and her in general. She was no help what so ever. Your job as an employee working in jewelry is to help all customers that walk through that door, regardless if they are wanting to look or buy. They all probably work on commission which is fine but you work with your customers till the end! You never know what can lead to a grate sale! That $80k ring could have been exactly what my sister's future fiancé was looking for. News flash!!!!!! The girl usually comes to pick out styles that she likes and tells everything to the boyfriend. If she didn't have a good experience she won't be sending her boyfriend to that store, and you just lost a sale that's could have been potential $80k or plus. SCHIFFMAN'S train your staff. I remember seeing Schiffman' s while shopping in Friendly Center many (many) years ago and thinking it was so "fancy". A few months ago while visiting the Greensboro area, my best friend, husband, and I decided to stop in and see if we could get an education on watches. We asked a smiling face if he could help us out. This was by far the most relaxed, unpretentious, informational experience I have ever had at any store. Absolutely zero pressure. Although we had not planned to make a purchase that specific day, we ended up not only purchasing one watch, we got two! (Side note: We left the store and thought about it first. Again, no pressure or hard sell tactics to keep us there).The watches were an amazing value, and lead to the best relationship I have had with a store. We received a thank you note from Schiffman's for our business. A real deal, hand written note in the mail! Who does that anymore? Since our initial purchase, we have made a couple more purchases and the experience keeps getting better. Since we live so far away, Jeff and Karolyn have gone above and beyond to help make our experience go smoothly. There are some very good jewelry stores in the Charlotte area where we live. However, we will continue to shop with Schiffman's from now on. This is real deal customer service where their main objective is satisfying the customer, not just trying to make a buck.
