Scheffler's is the kind of deli that's so good it makes you want to move to Toronto. It's a living, breathing charcuterie board in the middle of a St. Lawrence's Market. First of all, bravo on the samples. I haven't seen this many samples in a Costco. I haven't seen this many samples in the Great White North except at the Granville Island Public Market. Oh yeah, and if it's not out for samples already ... just ask ... they know you'll love it all! They have the meats. They have the cheeses. I mean, they made a couple a charcuterie wedding cake, people! They also have the patés, stuffed peppers, antipastos, tomatoes, roasted garlic, dips, olives, salads, truffles, milks, spreads, oils, vinegars, mustards, condiments, and dressings ... from all over the world. And, near and dear to my heart, homemade pesto! Scheffler's says they have "the largest selection of prosciutto in the city" and with their bounty, it's hard to argue. I would add BEST selection to that name, as well. Some of those that stood out? I tried a strong, nutty, bold, and sweet Fontina from Italy's Aosta Valley made from unpasteurized cow's milk. I also loved a Spanish chorizo and a French paté, the brand names of which escape me. Everything I tried at Scheffler's was DELI-icious!

6/24/15: Came here as part of a food tour, and while I didn't get to choose the items that we ate, I could tell that everything is awesome here. 1. Cheese: The one we had was some kind of cheddar (I think). Very strong and packed with flavor. Has more of the stinkiness found in the high-end soft cheeses, and is just a totally high-end ultra-high-grade cheese. 2. Prosciutto: Well, I think it's prosciutto, or at least some variant. Sorry, I'm not versed in all the different cured meats, but to me that's the general category. Sliced ultra-super-thin and served on butcher's paper. Looks and tastes great. 3. Peppers: So, I dunno what these were, but they're a little more than 1cm in diameter, and are really cute! Red with a little tail sticking out. You eat them with toothpicks. Tastes sweet and isn't too hot. Love these! If you want a snack, this is the place to go if you're in the St. Lawrence Market building. #curedmeat #meatstore #cheese #snacks

After a frantic few days of looking for a condo to rent after having just relocated from Australia, the last thing we wanted to do was have to slave over a hot stove to cook dinner. Thankfully we were dropped off by our realtor at St Lawrence Markets. It was very late in the afternoon and it was mostly empty but we found our way to a great deli that had some of our favorite products, cheese, terrines and prosciutto. They have a huge variety of cheese at very reasonable prices (compared to Australia anyway), three types of terrines (we opted for Pheasant and Pistachio) and three or four types of prosciutto (we opted for Italian). The terrine was really good, great taste and not overly rich. Pieces of pistachio was found throughout. We had a lovely "picnic" at our temporary accommodation, which was something we often did on Friday nights at home.

Awsome Chorizo at Scheffler's! Just picked some up and went for a beer!

Sanagan's Meat Locker is not just a Butchery, but also a market that showcases many high quality artisanal and local products. Their meats are always high quality and enhances whatever recipe you are using. There's also an educational aspect to Sanagan's. If you subscribe to their newsletter, or buy Peter Sanagan's book, you learn so much about what cuts of meat to use with what types of dishes, you discover hidden gems in cuts of meat, not to mention fantastic recipes. I had never heard of flat iron steaks (one of the most tender cuts of beef and very affordable) before Sanagan's and now it's a staple in my household. You are also able to order cuts of meat that are not available at the counter (I ordered duck hearts once) as well as order ahead online. The housemade sauces and charcuterie made by Sanagan's are also delicious. They might be slightly higher priced than supermarket brands, but they're highly worth it. Everyone is also super friendly and helpful at Sanagan's, you just know that they're being treated well there.

They come in mozzerella, provalone, cheddar and a few others. Mendels also does a good deal on stilton. If you buy it off of the wheel it's $5.99/100g But you get two 100g wedges prepaked for $6 flat. Half the price. They used to have $5/lb brie that came in big squares. I would stuff it with fruit and bake it. Cheap and fancy. Global, as far as I know, doesn;t sell large tubs of anchovies, but Mendels does. The giants tubs are $19.99, which I think cuts the price in half of the tiny ones that are $7.99. All in all, the cheapest in the market with a fine selection. The selection isn;t as big as at Global, and there are fewer of the fancy-smancy $14.99/100g seasonal tombes, etc, that you can get from Cheese Magic, but that's fine by me cause I rarely ever get those things. I have been attracted to their prices for cheese, but find that the perceived value is not actual. I suspected this for a while, but only gave in to confirming my suspicions after I acquired a calibrated digital scale. I weighed the cheese at home and found that on my last 3 purchases, I have been short-changed. The first time, I thought it might be a mistake, but this shortfall has been consistent. On my last [now final] visit, I asked for some of their "crumbled feta" and received a tub of cubed feta that was mostly brine. Yes, the whole weight *almost* reflected the quoted price, but paying 88 cents per hundred grams for mostly salty water guarantees that I will be shopping elsewhere from now on.

Hm... what will I have today? Pro tip: as the store owner would tell you, wait a few min for the ice cream sandwich to thaw before biting in. About 5 min is good and enough time to take Yelp pics.
