The man on the phone said he remembered the florist designing the bouquet and delivering it. I said I believed him but that unfortunately the flowers never arrived at the right house. He took my number and said he would call back. Never called back. I called three more times during business hours over the next week before disputing the charge with my credit card company. What's the policy when something like this happens? What prompted me to write a review...the business doesn't have voicemail set up. There are few things more frustrating than calling with no answer only to hear a machine say "sorry no one can answer, please call back." No, you call me back. I already called - you didn't answer - call when is convenient for you. So many good reviews and beautiful flower photos hopefully my experience was a fluke!

She's so fun and has the most amazing ideas! Last November, she put together the flowers for my wedding at the Half Moone and they came out so wonderfully! Everything looked rich and warm. I just loved what she did with the room and each of our bouquets. Mine was a cascade of calilillies and roses with ivy. It weighed a ton but looked wonderful. My sisters had bouquets of orange roses. I was put in charge of getting flowers for the viewing and the funeral, which was no easy task since my grandmother was a long-time member of various garden clubs and an avid gardener herself. I knew they had to be perfect, and I was skeptical about my chances for getting it right. Over the years, I had sent numerous bouquets and arrangements via internet order, only to show up myself a few days later and find that horrible flowers had been sent. This time, I decided to go, in person, to a local florist as soon as I got into town. My first stop was Hughes, a florist that has operated in the area for years and is about a 5 minute drive from where my grandmother lived. I was prepared to drive around town, though, if I had to. Anyway, I was there before they opened, and as soon I walked in, I was worried. It smelled a little smokey and some of the gifts sitting around the store looked like they had been sitting around for decades. But I pressed ahead, and I'm so glad I did. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I needed the flowers that afternoon, and they called their supplier to make sure everything I wanted - from a moss covered cross to bronzed calla lillies - was available. They promised to get all of the arrangements to the funeral home that afternoon in time for the viewing. I paid and left with my fingers crossed. When we arrived for the viewing, I am happy to say that the flowers were there and beyond beautiful. In fact, they were perfect. We received so many compliments, and I know my grandmother would have just loved them. So ... If you're about to place an internet order for flowers for any occasion, stop. Call a local florist if you can. And if the recipient is in Portsmouth or the Tidewater area of Virginia, call Hughes.

My husband and I received an arrangement from my MIL for our anniversary in October. The flowers…read morewere so fresh and beautifully arranged! They also lasted much longer than many other arrangements I've received from some others in the past. The first few photos are from 10/4. The others are from 10/11 after some of the others had already opened up. It was a wonderful combination of the two and I appreciate the balance. The only 2 cons I know of with this experience: 1. My MIL purchased them online through a 3rd party site (she can't remember which) and apparently paid extra for them to be delivered before 1pm. They were delivered between 3 and 4 when we were gone. The delivery person did call us when we didn't answer the door and mentioned that ordering through that 3rd party site was sometimes problematic as in they didn't know of the early delivery option. Which leads me to... 2. If you look up Martin's Florist directly, there is no way to order online from them directly. The website doesn't even list bouquet options. Only the ability to ask for a quote and call to order. For someone like me who often shops for these things in the evening and wants a good idea of how a bouquet will look, this is off-putting. In fact, I found this out when I tried to order from them about a month later. Ultimately ended up ordering from another business online because of it. Overall, I do recommend this florist bc as far as flowers go I was very impressed.
